it's mostly because people do a different variety of sonic.exe games then what it was years ago. Also known as survival platformers as opposed to inevitable death. Survival platformers turn a .exe game into a actual game with player skills involved at a cost, it removes a lot of the scary atmosphere of having no way to win, and the inevitable death variety is what gave .exe games their bad reputation since most .exe games don't use that scary atmosphere to their advantage and just make a joke out of .exe games.
