FreedomHero4 I love that none of these people understand what "paying for a service" means. They think that all they're paying for is the raw materials involved. Yes, us artists have supernatural powers where we can just squish some stuff together and -- oh, a finished piece. 😂
She gave kittens little crochet hats for a Cinco De Mayo Adoption event 4 days ago. If you have *EVER* seen this comment, go to their account. Edit: corrected gender, and now they also made Grammy & Grumpy hats. All the more reason to go check it out.
@@Malus1531 Please, don't tell me.....DON'T TELL ME! You agreed with the guy? The crocheter made some good points but I can see a non-artist or non-creative person doing this. You see, no matter the material, if it's a blanket, a digital drawing that only exists as code, or a goddamn video game or movie, beyond just the costs of making something, there is the cost of your time. No matter what, if you do not WANT to make it, then your time is being wasted making it. Money, or other compensation can help with that, and can make it so your time was worth it. Artists have shit to do. We have LIVES to LIVE. So from your perspective, it is a shit ton for a blanket. But it IS a hand made, full wool (FROM A GODDAMN ANIMAL) and it will take TIME and EFFORT to make. It is just like any job. If YOU are putting in effort, you should be payed for your effort. You can't just do it for the price of the materials, or else you aren't getting ANYTHING out of it. I have tried crotchet, and it DOES take time. And effort. In the end, this was a long-winded speech to one comment letting out the frustration I have with people who think this way. It is not JUST targeted at you, but I do think that you may not think of it as paying for "just a blanket." but paying for the artists time.
@@ReddCrystal My bad I commented after the first segment, before seeing the second half where the artist explained the price breakdown and how long it took. I get what you're saying. It still is a crazy amount to pay for a blanket imo, but I'm not saying he/she is overcharging.
Icy Beverage yeah it confused me cuz how they explained it is like, they edited based that were literally put out as BASES which are made to be edited by others artists, so like, if it’s an actual base and is credited then it’s perfectly fine
I was scrolling as the aforementioned rant was being read, and I saw this post. It did not adequately brace me for what happened a second later when I, too, got hit with "Winston from Overwatch". It was like mentally slamming into a brick wall at 70mph.
bazoongi That's insulting to Transformers fans and people with Down Syndrome to compare 'em to *that* guy. No actually though, I only half meant that as a joke. But the thought that having Dowm Syndrome means you can't type correctly is just incorrect.
just googled what "catherine stitch" is, and seeing how it's queen sized and natural wool i think $400 seems pretty fair edit: wait that actually seems very cheap
RIGHT! I can barely afford a cent. Damm starving “artists” charging $1. You have bills to pay. Me too, bitch. Me too. That is an insane amount of money. I can go to Walmart and get art for free! Art hoes need money to draw. They don’t know their wirth. They are insane. They charge WAY TO MUCH. I will destroy their business.
Y'know ive been thinking they say 1 dollar is too much It could be A.They don't have PayPal or some other method of paying Or B.Theyere just some cheap ass c*nts

Geez that poor crochet person. I work in customer service and I will never understand why the hell people think threats, yelling, or cussing out a stranger will strong arm them into doing anything for you.
I generally try to handle those situations with grace. I have no way of knowing what kind of day that person has had. Maybe someone in their family is really sick or dying? Maybe they just lost their job? However, on that same principle, I also expect to be treated well because that person has no clue what kind of day I’ve had.
Probably because of the term "The customer is always right" Companies would rather give in then get bad reviews. But yeah, it doesn't really work in other situations. I hated having to serve rude customers
+swayingmetal001 I was a cashier at Target a few years back and this woman accused me of charging her more than the price of the item. I calmly explained to her that it was sales tax but she flipped out and asked for a manager. I'm not sure what my manager ended up telling her but it was the weirdest thing I've ever been accused of
Yeah just walk into Joann's on a Tuesday, buy twenty skeins of wool at like 70% off, and don't get paid for the three-to-four weeks of crocheting you're gonna do. Easy.
2:47 "Hey I bought this brand new car back in 2010 but I noticed the 2018 version is a lot better so can I just have that one for free because its not fair people are paying the same price I paid back in 2010" Yeah cause that's how things work
it could be a nice policy to have a discount for redraws, maybe the people who like your work would be more likely to buy another artwork from you, just to have their treasured commission be up to date. people would probably be more likely to consider commissioning a re-draw if you advertise a discount
Entraya Crosshill ??? But what you have to keep in mind is that usually with an improvement of style comes a much longer time spent on the commission as well as raise of price. Doing a redraw won't take a shorter amount of time, most likely it'll take significantly longer than the old piece it's based on, so why should someone charge less for a piece that is going to take even longer???
why should they discount? its up to the artist dude im not saying they -should-. its not uncommon to have like 20% off sales, or free shipping campaigns, why should they do that? im not an artist so i dont know what the exact reasons are, but i reckon they do these things to make people think 'oh lets buy a poster now, its free shipping', so having a re-draw campaign could be an idea to entice old fans to buy a commission. its just business -ideas- dude dont freak out
I wasn't freaking out, merely stating my opinion, because as an artist myself I wouldn't offer discounts to anyone excepting close friends purely because of the amount of work that goes into it. Sure it's a good business campaign, but unless you had commissions selling consistently most artists couldn't afford to do that kind of thing if it is something they're making a living off. (Retail stores or the like can afford sales like that because they're not the ones sitting there painstaking over a single piece of work for hours, it's much different when it comes to art.) I'm not trying to argue for the sake of arguing or anything, I honestly just wanted to hear your reasoning because doing that kind of thing for cheaper/free (in the case of the video) isn't something that a lot of artists would consider. Thanks for explaining why you thought that :)
Shadow Of Light For parents, yes, but I hardly doubt they’d want more but a traditional sketch. Friends shouldn’t expect or demand free art but most artists simply gift them art when feeling generous.
I think 1$ for a drawing is like... probably good. It’s most likely something this person can bang out quick, and (from what I’ve seen) chibi drawings are in a high demand. Cute, simple and cheap. Something that person can afford to have a que in
Usually Chibis are just small doodles. I have a friend who does Chibis for a dollar. Granted most people say his comission prices are really cheap lol.
well when i only started doing commisions i didnt charge, i traded... but after realizing that i worked way harder for what i was getting i started charging 3$ per commision, and because i was only starting out i got only 2 people who commisioned me, and for me actual profit is better than nothing (of course i charge more now that i have experience and actual frequent customers)
He pretty much tells him he’s gonna make 2 dollars an hour for 150 hour of labor along with a starting cost of 150 dollars. “I’ll give you 70” I don’t even
Yeah a super “generous” offer of $70 let’s see, so if the yarn is $160 at full price then you would need a over 50% sale just for the $70 to cover the cost of the wool and then 120-150 hours of stitching without any pay. So that’s what generosity is huh? I see... Ok so now let’s do some math, assuming we give this person $10 an hour (about minimum wage) then it’ll come out to $1360-$1660. Hmmm... ok well since they’re not professional the what about $5 an hour? Let’s see... 120 X 5 + 160 = $760 150 X 5 + 160 = $910 So it should be about $760-$1660 which means that $400 is kind of a steal of a deal!
@Eraclese yeah, i live in connecticut and the minimum wage here is 11, and they're planning on raising it by 1 dollar every year until it gets to 15. it is really expensive to live here, though, so i think it kind of depends on those factors too
@@alchemistrie yeah different states have different minimum wages. Heck what wage is necessary for each city varies as well. However the federal hasn't changed in about 60 or so years. For one city needing a higher minimum, there is a more small town area with lower living cost.
The blanket guy also compared a blanket from walmart, in acrylic, made by a machine in about 15 minutes to a heavy queen sized, complex, handcrafted wool blanket lmao. Yeah the walmart one is cheaper, i wonder why *hmmmmm*
"Hey plumber, if you just fix my sink real quick, I'll tell people about you at the office." "Hey carpenter, could you build me a mahogany shelf real quick? I don't have any money, but I'll tell my friends who built it when they come over." "Hey accountant, can you give me a hand with my taxes? I'm a little confused on how to do them, so I'd like to walk through them with you. Please? I'll even pass around a few of your business cards...." That's....that's literally what these people are saying....
"Hey, cook, can you made this dish for me quickly? i have no money" "Hey, you. Get this work done and i will tell my friends about you" "Hey, we need material to build the rocket we need" "Oh ok, here. it will cost you 2 Million dollars" " *Y O U ' R E I n SA n e!* " "Why?" "YOU COULD BUY THIS THING IN [PLACE NAME] FOR [CHEAP PRICE]!" "Then why would you not go there?" "BECUZ AI NED EAT VRY FST, NOW!" " It will cost you 2 million dollars" "OMG, **** YOU!, MY DAD IS THE PRESIDENT AND I WILL SUE THIS PLACE! **** YOU!, WHEN I A BILLIONAIRE I WILL FRIKIN SUE YOU! YOU **** ****** ***** ******** **** !!!" - you have been blocked -
"Hey Government, Can you get rid of my Million dollar fine and my 42163632 second jail sentence, Ill tell myself that you should be elected" -One of the 7.5 billion people on earth "No" -Government "IM FRIENDS WITH THE GOVERNMENT, ILL SUE YA" -One of the 7.5 billion people on earth
As an accountant, I get basically that request multiple times a year, especially people that call me over the phone to help them through their tax return step by step. Along with the oh-so-loved "my [random family member] does them for free" which isn't uncommonly followed by "but they messed it up last time, so I thought I'd try someone else out."
Omfg art is a *LUXURY* item!!! In the beginning, only *kings* and *queens* and other nobility were able to have their portraits painted. *Millionaires* today buy classical art in auction. To have art is a *privilege* not a right. Ya don't need shit. Great video Sorrow!!! With great quality as ever♡
I agree, like to just see and appreciate art all you need is a museum ticket or even just going on the internet but owning art and having work someone put so much care into is a privilege, artists aren't free labor
Literally, paying an artist to do work is having a picture in your mind that you want to come to life, find the right person and then what's in your head can be beautifully made. Art is a skill that take a life time to hone, it's difficult and there is literal studying that needs to be done.
If there is one thing artists hate hearing the most, it's "But it will get you exposure and can lead into something more." Also my personal favorite I get, "We can't pay you for this one but it can lead to another project in which we can pay you."
@Cat Egorical I'm not OP, but I imagine the answer is the latter one. People who are willing to scum one artist out of pay for their hard work are perfectly willing to then turn around and scam other people of other professions out of pay for THEIR hard work, and in fact, I suspect many of such individuals try and scam artists who offer reasonable commission prices as a sort of "testing the waters" to see how much crap they can pull past the radar before they get caught. Granted, there probably are some businesses who withhold payment on a first piece in order to see how good the artist is at what's being asked of them, but I suspect they hand over payment at the end one way or another - to compensate the artist's time if it's a no-go, or because they've earned it if they're willing to continue working with that artist. That's the difference between those kinds of companies and these kinds of scumbags.
This finally happened to me. I’m a freelance editor and I already edit for a youtuber atm. I was open to add another customer to my list of employers and my friend came to me with. The name of someone looking to edit their league of legend videos. I hit em up saying I was a freelance editor he tells me “oh? Cool! I just need an editor for my league videos” I tell him alright if you’re willing to pay let’s get started” he literally says to me “what? Willing to pay? I thought you said you were freelance” I say yeah. Freelance. I work for myself. He says “no freelance means FREE” I explain to him that he has to pay or I won’t edit for him so he says ha! I was gonna pay you after you were done. When I become big and famous you’ll be dead in a ditch. “Fuck off you black inbred piece of shit” and then blocked me. I can relate to these video so much more!
Luigio Sometimes you just need to drag the situation out: to prove how much of a shitbag the 'potential client' is, and to beautifully thrash them by the end.
Halefall Right?! That's an insanely cheap price once they explained the time and costs that go into a blanket. Literally charges less than $2 an hour and the guy was *still* pussyaching about it. Smh he missed out on a great deal.
Ares one dollar for some one who wants a commision i think they feel like they are paying 100$ the lowest commision price i know is 0.50¢ and thats for a fucking sketch
ChickenNuggets I crochet commissions too. I’m 21 years old, and I’ve been learning crochet since I was in fourth grade. If someone tried to get me to do one of my stuffed animals with natural fibers and three feet tall or something ridiculous like this blanket the guy wanted, I’d be asking for a shit ton of money and you bet your ass that guy would be calling me insane in an instant. I have a huge amount of pride in the skills I’ve held onto for so long and learned so much with even to this day. I mean obviously no one else could ever have the same amount of respect for your craft than you and fellow crafters, but this is ridiculous.
I've seen people trying to commission my artist friends and they think the services are free?? Like my friend told this guy that drawing and colouring takes time and ink and stationary and high-grade paper isn't exactly cheap where I live (they're mostly imported) and the guy had the audacity to say 'I'll just pay for the materials then' like ??? you're also paying for their time? and patience????? what??? it's so sad because crafters constantly have to deal with "oh it's expensive I don't want it anymore" / "you charge too much" / "I can recommend you to my friends so can you give me half off"
I don't understand either, surely you can buy the materials you want used at the lower price and just ask the person to crochet it. Why get the crocheter to buy you materials but charge less?
$1 for a chibi drawing isn’t that bad of a price, actually. Probably not a lot of money to make, though, if you plan to make revenue from being an artist.
400 for a custom made blanket is cheap i would buy in a heartbeat. Could spend over 100 just off cheap bed linen a blanket that wears easy and barely keeps you warm
at first, i was like UR INSANE but after the artist explained i was like oh... u need to be getting paid more also i could pay that shit easily in a week. lets just say im new to the whole shit where everything past 100 is alot of money
elijah gradel yea handmade shit and art in general is usually more expensive than you expect but it's because of all the time it takes to make and especially in art customer doesn't just take first draft you give him and even than the first sketches given to customer are not really first sketches
Did anyone else find the '$70 for a wool blanket' guy so infuriating that they wanted to smash their head against the nearest hard surface? Asking for a friend.
"'Are you with me?' - Winston from Overwatch" I just spit my water all over because of how ridiculous that sentence was. That line has been around since THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WAS INVENTED
Digital Unity eh, the walmart analogy was the stupidest thing in the video. Walmart is a megacompany, the biggest supermarket corporation ever, having a candybar stolen, a very low value item, means nothing to them. In comparison to the artist, it's making it out like he could make a trillion of those o's, and if one was stolen, he wouldn't notice, making it a low effort proposition. It's making it seem like his art process is much easier than it is.
Hey, lady (not the comment writer, the one in the video): 1. There are Walmarts here in America. Trust me, I know. 2. NO ONE CARES IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA. PAY FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO PURCHASE.
I love how the guy went from working for a gaming company to working for a record label to owning a record label, and also has an Autobot as his Twitter pic.
The blanket one: I changed my policy to pay half upfront since I had someone commission me then when it was done, she refused to pay me and then blocked me 😅
I did love the ending though. Doubling the price was sweet to hear, although it was still under priced (just to be reasonable it should have been charged 5x the amount, that is very reasonable.)
When I use to be on Deviantart, I did commissions for 10 points. Which is like, 10 cents in real life. I just like drawing other people's OCs and stuff, so I set my price pretty low. This kid asked for a commission (On their profile, it said they were 9). I agreed, but seeing their age, I had my guard up because it's not my first time for a kid to ask art from me. The kid wanted me to draw their FNAF OC in a chibi style. I was still in the FNAF fandom at that time, so I allowed commissions with furries in them. I told them the price (10 cents) , and they started angry at me for "scamming" them. They were only 9, so they weren't allowed on deviantart in the first place. They got blocked in the end.
$1 can get you a candy bar that can fit in the palm of your hand. Look, it's a chibi. It's art. The fact that they're willing to ask for only a dollar in return is extremely generous. What do you expect them to do it for, free? Oh, right, I forgot who this video was about. Of course they wanted it free. Honestly...
years ago I came across this kid on DeviantArt who was re uploading (cropped) versions of people's art and not crediting them. naturally, a bunch of us messaged her asking her to take all of the work down, or at the very least credit who the art was from. her response was that she was emo, so we were making her depressed and driving her to suicide by being 'haters'. DeviantArt terminated her account.
I know a game maker who didn't even credit the composer of all the music that she's using in her games. Her games are nice imo, but I find it kinda distasteful that when a gamer reviewed her game and ask her who made the music and all, she replied with something like, "Oh, it was such a long time ago so I don't know where I got them and I'm too lazy to look for it haha".
Tbh, instagram is way worse. There's literally Pages of people crediting other pages that credit the first page again. Like a cycle of plagiarism. Also people crediting "whoever did the art" doesn't give exposure...at all. And instagram doesn't do shit about it.
As an artist i can confirm that whenever i draw in public people ask me to draw them, i tell them they have to pay and they get their panties in a twist
AnimeDjGirl101 That shit is annoying whether i get paid or not. I hate it so much when i get asked. I refuse to draw in public anymore becuase of this.
Scarces Flannel I don’t even get their logic, how do these people think that i would waste hours of my time drawing a picture for them that they wont even fucking pay for...seriously.
"Wow!! You draw so well!!! Can you draw me???" -"Yeah, It's gonna cost you [enter a small amount of money here]" "What?!??!? Fuck off, I ain't paying you for a drawing. You don't even draw that well" -"Well fuck you too :)"
Bluedog 1414 No, of course not. It's just that when you draw professionally or you're trying to make a job out of this, you cannot really draw for free. A lot of hard work goes into each and ever drawing. But strangers expect that they can get it all for free
Stencil Zhi-Yi I'm guessing it's the same principle that bratty kids use to get their parents to buy a new toy. Bugging them until they they give in just to shut them up.
Rexyr really? I see the voices as being indicative of classic manipulation, where the good guys sound normal and relatable, while the bad guys sound stupid or different. It’s pretty low and takes the humor out of the posts. It’d be more funny if he had them all sound relatively like normal voices, because then he’d be focusing on the absurdity of the posts without resorting to treating us like toddlers who can’t understand that a person is a bad guy without a funny voice.
I showed my mother the crochet blanket one because she does them and she said that $400 is super reasonable for all the work that he's asking for and materials $800.00 should've been the upfront price! 😂😂😂
Jeannine K that's what I was thinking. A custom made queen sized blanket. I was thinking, if this was a professional thing, it would be at least $13.78 an hour for that kind of work. 150 hours (around 5 hours a day over 4 weeks) becomes $2067 and then the cost of materials on top. I'm a British designer and I would say that £10/$13.78 an hour for commissioned custom work like that is more than reasonable when approaching someone doing professional level work that you specifically ask for. Like if you want something cheap, go to a gift shop or Walmart. The blankets there are still nice. Custom made is always more expensive. Mass production is easier to sell cheaply. Are people seriously missing this point...
The crochet one hurts me inside, genuinely. I mean, the others hurt, but god damn. Crochet is a pain in the ass, and to make something that big- Holy hell dude.
Make a really bad one and then gift it to someone telling them you put your whole heart into it, just so they feel forced to use it everytime you visit. It's the best. My friend still has an incredibly badly made clay box in her shelf because I told her I worked really hard on it.
I mean half the size would easily cover two people on a couch. 3x6 - 4x8 is typical couch blanket size. Even then a hand made 100% wool blanket would be over 400 from a professional (i.e. not a hobbyist) the fact they they do it as a hobby is why they can afford to charge so little because they are pretty much charging for supplies and a bit for time whereas a person who does it for a living would charge based on an hourly rate so....probably like over 1500-2000 for what he is asking.
@@TheNexDude I had a really good friend that asked me to do a portrait of her sister for a Birthday. Of course I did it. It pains me that they printed the damn thing out, and still have it hanging up in their dining room. It's not even good, I drew it so long ago.
Lee Alexander I think he meant he wouldn't get a handmade custom blanket in the first place. After all, a blanket is a blanket. 400$ is more than reasonable for custom handmade yada yada, but its still a blanket. A blanket can be gotten waaay cheaper if you're willing to drop the yada yada and go generic
Yep, that's their loser logic. They have jobs that they hate, and for some reason they think everyone should hate their job. So if you enjoy your job you shouldn't be paid for it.
The Keyboardslinger Do you draw/do commissions yourself? You sound very offended. XD Edit: I meant offended by the people trying to get people to do free commissions, not by my comment.
Theres still people in this world that think that products should cost what the person who made them bought the materials for. How do people not understand that you don't make any money with that logic?
And they'll try to find ways to get it for free, I've had ppl say "your parents pay for the electricity so u don't need money to make the digital art" or "real art is too expensive, just make it abstract, I'll even but the material," like...? And if ppl don't think some abstract art takes artistic skill, then why aren't they doing it themselves?? Cause I still charge for my skill and the studying I've done to make appealing works 🤦🏾♀️💀
$1 for a chibi seems extremely cheap (idk the rates but it seems it should cost significantly more) Also $400 is actually pretty respectable for a blanket like that. They take forever and cost a lot on supplies
Max Garza Some really good artists charge around $25 for a chibi. $1 is insanely cheap, and assuming it takes about an hour or so to make a quality chibi drawing, $1 is way below minimum wage.
Yeah. Like I'd charge a €5 at least. I offer €1 chibis but only because I'd say I'm still beginner level and the market is hard when youre not a popular artist
Yeah. I used to post some of the stuff I did for my major works for the HSC on my instagram acc, and a few weeks later had a bunch of sketchy accounts following me. I checked one of them out because the name sounded like a business, and sure enough it was some sort of "store" selling T-shirts with designs poorly photoshopped onto them, telling you "50% OFF!" And not listing a price anywhere. One of the shirts was using one of my paintings, and credited some "Lawler Espinoza" or something like that. (Who isn't me.) I tried to contact the account and they blocked me 👌
ive seen a for exposure tweet where the artist used that example and the scum bag said its different because the landlord does good by letting people have places to live XD
please i'll pay you in exposure i have 14 subscribers edit : wait i have 29 so that's more than enough for a house (wait why are people subbing to me i'm not funny and i have no videos- oh uh i mean i'm hilarious and my content is better than pewdiepie's so please i need to feed my child)
"You demonstrate your skill first". That is literally usually the function of having a portfolio for people to look through before hiring you. You don't go to a 'typical' job and work for free for a full work week to prove you can do it before you're hired.
I worked for one day at starbucks and had to sign that I'm not gonna get paid for that day since I'm getting taught. Since I thought I'd get hired after that I went for it. They needed workers after all..but I didn't get the job. "I was over-qualified"
Fun fact: as soon as you put pen to paper, you own the copyright as long as it's original work and not done under contract. The only time you would need to register a copyright is if you plan to sue for damages.
Technically, you're right. The moment you make something, it's yous. the copyright doesn't grant ownership. However, it DOES create verifiable proof of ownership. If you don't go out and get it, then if someone steals it, good luck proving you made it. I highly recommend everyone copyright everything they do. A cool loophole for people trying to save money (it's 35$ per copyright) you can create a "collection" and copyright the entire collection as a whole. So I got a copyright on a few hundred photos, for the price of one. Also, a common misunderstanding is that many people intentionally don't copywrite their work because they want to share it with others for free. You can still do this with a copyright. It changes nothing other than giving you the ability to to prove that you made it in case you ever want to prove that.
"Good luck trying to prove that you made jt" Do you know how easy it is to do this? Art get stolen all the time and artists always get them back. This happens because of art styles and lables on the art itself. Just look it up, it's so easy.
I can easily prove it haha. I always keep my files and never show the different files without a huge watermark saying my name on them. That way, even if people took an unwatermarked image, I'd still have proof from posted date, style, and files. The magic of digital art. But I guess for traditional art it would be a bit harder to do. You could always right your name on with pen but if the artist owned the copy they could write their name on it and act like you vandalised your name on
6:00 "We take credit for what we change in the lineart" then do you credit the original artist? do you tell people what you added on? ....didn't think so.

I really appreciate the music you use in your videos as well as your covers in your videos. I know you don't create anymore, but you are super talented Sorrow TV
I've wasted so much time and effort on doing things for friends and family from some design work to restoring old photos, even knitting something which took weeks and I barely even get a thank you. I finally decided not to do anything for free anymore. Don't sell yourself short
Same here. I decided enough was enough when I spent 3 solid days doing a tattoo design for my cousin. She asked me to send pictures every five minutes (not an exaggeration). Constantly texting me about it, kept changing her mind and beating around the bush. She had a clear idea in her head but gave me vague descriptions. She was rude and pushy and kept guilting me to work faster and kept trying to tell me how to do my job. I had about 3 hours sleep altogether because I couldn't say no and my family were pressuring me to be nice to her and do what she wanted. I barely even ate because I was so stressed to get it finished. The ONLY condition I gave her was to research her artist first and get it done properly. She got it done as soon as I finished it, her (not tattoo artist) friend did it for her with a cheap gun. Her friend had re-designed it and the whole thing looked god-awful. I wake up to see she credited me for it on ALL social media. Man, I untagged myself and blocked that bitch. Never done anything for free since and never will again. Ps. I asked her not to credit me in the beginning because I didn't want other people asking me for free work
this is why im amazed by fanfic writers every day! some of them write out novel length fanfics all as a hobby and people have the audacity to yell at them for not updating regularly? like what the fuck people are so ungrateful
The base thing at around 5:58 is complicated - they are being overdramatic though. For those who don't frequent art/fandom spaces, a base is a piece made exclusively to be used by others. If you've ever seen those MS Paint anime girls with no hair on google images, that's probably a base. It's basically tracing, but the artist has given everyone permission to do so. You should never assume something is a base without checking, but they can also take the form of normal lineart. They're usually made to help people who aren't able to draw so well on their own yet and can be great learning tools. The intent is usually a mixture of that and a form of self-promotion by an artist to get their style more recognized. It's like you got a coloring book and the payment is loudly stating the artist's name every time you show it to someone. The key thing here is that when an artist makes a base, they are usually expecting to be directly credited for the work. It's self-promotion, so they're going to want their name on it even if you've made a bunch of changes. The issue comes in when people don't do this. "Base not mine" is a common thing to see and it infuriates artists everywhere. I get the idea that the real reason this person is ranting is that they have been either incorrectly crediting bases or have been using non-bases as bases without the artists knowledge.
I don't understand people like her. If that's too expensive and you have bills to pay, then wtf are you doing commissioning a painting of your family and pets?
If I was an artist I'd charge someone more for each time they complained about price. I don't think it'd change anything, but I'd get a laugh out of it.
Moving Parts Gaming I genuinely do this for photography. Someone thinks my prices for an event are expensive (they’re really not, I keep getting told I’m underselling myself but I’m also not interested in pursuing photography as a career, it’s my hobby)? The price gets doubled. They complain more and call me a bunch of names? Doubled again!!! Eventually it ends with me just putting “either pay me £10,000 for your 4 hour event or leave me the hell alone” and honestly it never fails to make me laugh
i just read another 2 of your comments before this in a row... you are really enthusiastic about this aren't you lmao I totally agree tho Idk why these greedy cheapskates think that being an asshole for long enough will make it any cheaper
Artist here. It's exactly what I do. As soon as they complain and refuse to back down I double my price. If they are particularly bad, like the ones in this video, I also screen shot the messages, and shit they send to me, and post it on my board as people I have black listed so other people, customers and artist friends, can see them too.

FreedomHero4 I love that none of these people understand what "paying for a service" means. They think that all they're paying for is the raw materials involved. Yes, us artists have supernatural powers where we can just squish some stuff together and -- oh, a finished piece. 😂
yeah.. i would do the same if someone comfronts me in my fucking 1$ comissions

Dude, $400 for that custom blanket is an amazing price.
If I had the money to, I'd love to commission one of those, man.
Is it really? That's a shit ton to pay for just a blanket.
@Samuel Pomfret I'm not putting it against anything other than the percentage of my budget I dedicate to blankets.

Lamiria | Oh hi Neo
Neo? What are you doing here?
Editing is fine if you *credit* the base owner, and use bases that aren't meant to be bought, which I doubt they did.

Especially when it's at some minimum wage employee they think personally sets the prices
+swayingmetal001 I was a cashier at Target a few years back and this woman accused me of charging her more than the price of the item. I calmly explained to her that it was sales tax but she flipped out and asked for a manager. I'm not sure what my manager ended up telling her but it was the weirdest thing I've ever been accused of
"I'll pay you $70 dollars. That's more than generous."

Yeah cause that's how things work
Very Genius thought process
it could be a nice policy to have a discount for redraws, maybe the people who like your work would be more likely to buy another artwork from you, just to have their treasured commission be up to date. people would probably be more likely to consider commissioning a re-draw if you advertise a discount
(Retail stores or the like can afford sales like that because they're not the ones sitting there painstaking over a single piece of work for hours, it's much different when it comes to art.)
I'm not trying to argue for the sake of arguing or anything, I honestly just wanted to hear your reasoning because doing that kind of thing for cheaper/free (in the case of the video) isn't something that a lot of artists would consider. Thanks for explaining why you thought that :)
You gave the guy that spells "draw" as "drawl" a Southern drawl. Well played.

Ok so now let’s do some math, assuming we give this person $10 an hour (about minimum wage) then it’ll come out to $1360-$1660.
Hmmm... ok well since they’re not professional the what about $5 an hour? Let’s see... 120 X 5 + 160 = $760 150 X 5 + 160 = $910

Cool. I am turning down the free gig but let me know when that paying gig is ready.
The last one is the "ill pay you back when i get some money" mentality.

Like my friend told this guy that drawing and colouring takes time and ink and stationary and high-grade paper isn't exactly cheap where I live (they're mostly imported) and the guy had the audacity to say 'I'll just pay for the materials then' like ??? you're also paying for their time? and patience????? what??? it's so sad because crafters constantly have to deal with "oh it's expensive I don't want it anymore" / "you charge too much" / "I can recommend you to my friends so can you give me half off"
Volunteer work
I don't understand either, surely you can buy the materials you want used at the lower price and just ask the person to crochet it. Why get the crocheter to buy you materials but charge less?
next time it happens, ask them why they hate capitalism so much :}
"chibi for $1"
me: omg what so cheap
this lady: 1 cent or no
Ikr that like club fundraiser prices. Probably cheaper actually. If I was good at it probably would charge at least $5
$1 for a chibi drawing isn’t that bad of a price, actually. Probably not a lot of money to make, though, if you plan to make revenue from being an artist.
One dollar is crazy cheap, like I’d pay them ten honestly
Yeah, like, holy shit, I'm broke and I'd still pay that price.
I'm actually kinda interested in the $400 blanket person.
400 for a custom made blanket is cheap i would buy in a heartbeat. Could spend over 100 just off cheap bed linen a blanket that wears easy and barely keeps you warm
Joshua Gibson yup a handmade blanket like that would be in your family for generations. Thats a good deal IMO
@@ksfishchannel can confirm, we have a blanket made by my great-grandmother. Still in excellent shape, and still soft and warm.

Idk, $400 for a handmade blanket seems cheaper then I'd of thought it would be

at first, i was like UR INSANE but after the artist explained i was like oh... u need to be getting paid more also i could pay that shit easily in a week. lets just say im new to the whole shit where everything past 100 is alot of money
elijah gradel yea handmade shit and art in general is usually more expensive than you expect but it's because of all the time it takes to make and especially in art customer doesn't just take first draft you give him and even than the first sketches given to customer are not really first sketches

Did anyone else find the '$70 for a wool blanket' guy so infuriating that they wanted to smash their head against the nearest hard surface? Asking for a friend.

"We don't have Walmart" - a person blessed with location, but cursed by ignorance.
Hey, lady (not the comment writer, the one in the video):
1. There are Walmarts here in America. Trust me, I know.
2. NO ONE CARES IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA. PAY FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO PURCHASE.

$400 for a handmade blanket with those materials and that size.. Is reasonable
It's not reasonable, it is overly generous. $2 an hour are slave wages.
I did love the ending though. Doubling the price was sweet to hear, although it was still under priced (just to be reasonable it should have been charged 5x the amount, that is very reasonable.)

Bob Treduis yeah its very cheep and i cant believe that person would say that $1 is expensive

If you ever say that $1 is too much for anything that you might possibly want to buy, you need help.
Can I get 50% off on that?
Unless it's a price for one nail.
Honestly...
$1 is too much for a gumball, it's too much for a single rubber band, it's too much for a Pencil, there's things paying $1 for is paying too much
Joseph Schubert there's no way I wouldn't pay $1 a chibi!! Wtf!!
years ago I came across this kid on DeviantArt who was re uploading (cropped) versions of people's art and not crediting them. naturally, a bunch of us messaged her asking her to take all of the work down, or at the very least credit who the art was from. her response was that she was emo, so we were making her depressed and driving her to suicide by being 'haters'.
DeviantArt terminated her account.
Deviantart? Not being dog shit and terminating someone doing something wrong? _I haven't seen that in ages...._
lmao
I know a game maker who didn't even credit the composer of all the music that she's using in her games. Her games are nice imo, but I find it kinda distasteful that when a gamer reviewed her game and ask her who made the music and all, she replied with something like, "Oh, it was such a long time ago so I don't know where I got them and I'm too lazy to look for it haha".
Oof
Tbh, instagram is way worse. There's literally Pages of people crediting other pages that credit the first page again. Like a cycle of plagiarism.
Also people crediting "whoever did the art" doesn't give exposure...at all. And instagram doesn't do shit about it.
Oh god, the verbatim readings are killing me, accents are perfect. Great stuff.
As an artist i can confirm that whenever i draw in public people ask me to draw them, i tell them they have to pay and they get their panties in a twist

"What?!??!? Fuck off, I ain't paying you for a drawing. You don't even draw that well"
-"Well fuck you too :)"
Bluedog 1414 No, of course not.

YOUR INSANE ! ! ! 1!!!!
Neon Confection people just don't understand economics at all. Supply and demand and economy of scale seem to be out of the grasp of such fools.
The crochet one hurts me inside, genuinely. I mean, the others hurt, but god damn. Crochet is a pain in the ass, and to make something that big- Holy hell dude.
That's a big mood. Luckily, I haven't cursed any of my friends with my sad projects yet. Let's so how long that lasts...
Make a really bad one and then gift it to someone telling them you put your whole heart into it, just so they feel forced to use it everytime you visit.

Let's face it: artists can be too nice sometimes

$400 for a queen sized handmade custom blanket is a goddamn steal in my eyes.

Logic be like: "This is your hobby, why don't you do it for free then?"
Yea cuz you can't turn your hobby into a profession...
Yep, that's their loser logic. They have jobs that they hate, and for some reason they think everyone should hate their job. So if you enjoy your job you shouldn't be paid for it.
The Keyboardslinger Do you draw/do commissions yourself? You sound very offended. XD
Edit: I meant offended by the people trying to get people to do free commissions, not by my comment.

Im pretty sure you need money to have a life?
psst... he’s agreeing with you.
Max Garza Some really good artists charge around $25 for a chibi. $1 is insanely cheap, and assuming it takes about an hour or so to make a quality chibi drawing, $1 is way below minimum wage.
legit even if the chibi was half assed doodle on math homework it would still be a good deal tbh

"You demonstrate your skill first". That is literally usually the function of having a portfolio for people to look through before hiring you. You don't go to a 'typical' job and work for free for a full work week to prove you can do it before you're hired.
NovaCase That’s actually not that uncommon... Totally bullshit mind you and borderline illegal, but it happens a lot in low-skill positions.

Tell that to philo
I can easily prove it haha. I always keep my files and never show the different files without a huge watermark saying my name on them. That way, even if people took an unwatermarked image, I'd still have proof from posted date, style, and files.
The magic of digital art.
But I guess for traditional art it would be a bit harder to do. You could always right your name on with pen but if the artist owned the copy they could write their name on it and act like you vandalised your name on
Blitzy Its pretty easy to remove a watermark work photoshop.

HOLY CRAP that blanket drama was epic. Thankfully that blanket maker posted that INSANE back and forth....holy crap.
I get the idea that the real reason this person is ranting is that they have been either incorrectly crediting bases or have been using non-bases as bases without the artists knowledge.
alright..... $130 for a one foot by one foot painting with so many subjects is kind of a steal.....
I am assuming the subjects are her kids and pets. It'd be a cherished family heirloom, well worth the money.
I don't understand people like her. If that's too expensive and you have bills to pay, then wtf are you doing commissioning a painting of your family and pets?
Right! I was thinking this lady is crazy.
If it was a dress and a jacket these people would pay and it is mass manufactured.
She did call herself a "cheap bitch" at the end, though. I think she realized out by the end. Hence the "rant" warning and the concluding sentence.
If I was an artist I'd charge someone more for each time they complained about price. I don't think it'd change anything, but I'd get a laugh out of it.
Moving Parts Gaming I know for a fact that I'd do the same thing.
Eventually it ends with me just putting “either pay me £10,000 for your 4 hour event or leave me the hell alone” and honestly it never fails to make me laugh
i just read another 2 of your comments before this in a row... you are really enthusiastic about this aren't you lmao
I totally agree tho Idk why these greedy cheapskates think that being an asshole for long enough will make it any cheaper
More exposure ey? ;)
nah jk
Artist here. It's exactly what I do. As soon as they complain and refuse to back down I double my price. If they are particularly bad, like the ones in this video, I also screen shot the messages, and shit they send to me, and post it on my board as people I have black listed so other people, customers and artist friends, can see them too.
the last time I did something just for the exposure, I got fined by the police
can you show video proof (just for an school project)

Hank J. Wimbleton, it’s weird how many madness combat accounts there are considering how it’s kinda underrated.
@@papaq3810 Let's make it not underrated.
After seeing that "Your Insane." guy I finally understand what projection means.
