As someone who lives in the area, the amount of mismanagement is infuriating. The line would be extremely beneficial today and could easily get pretty high ridership numbers. Most of the busses going east into Scarborough are constantly congested, full of people trying to get to an from the subway. I recently heard that the government is now looking into finally extending the line and that is certainly comforting news.

The whole subway makes sense. And I know those communities in North York and Scarborough would benefit immensely from the line. Not to mention the potential for development in the region. But it's just gets quarter built and of course it's not at its full potential. It's infuriating the lack of foresight our elected officials have.

I moved to North York right at the end of the line in May of 2000 while it was still being built. The vertical explosion along Sheppard I've seen since then has been breathtaking. It's the literal proof of the line from Field of Dreams... "If you build it, they will come."

All these years later, and we still don't have a westward Sheppard Line extension to the Spadina Line, which would make it so much easier for people to get around, and makes the most sense.

That final map makes our transit system look more complete. And with the new finch west line currently being built, that circle actually looks more complete

Your video has answered a long gap/question in my memory. I clearly have memories of them building lines WEST on Sheppard, very near Senlac, and could never figure out why they were not in use. thank you.

The Oriole GO platform is actually about 400 metres walk from Leslie Station bus loop; its been extended to Esther Shiner Blvd sometime in 2018.

I lived on Sheppard W near the former Airforce Base during the late 80's. They couldn't bring Sheppard E buses into the station fast enough. I was often annoyed because the Sheppard W buses seemed few and far between. I just wanted to get home. This subway always made total sense to me. Had they built it up to at least Victoria, it might have been more successful. There are an awful lot of people working around Victoria/Consumers Rd.

Transit suffered through some tough times from the mid 80's to mid 2000's.
Liberals from 1985 to 1990 added 1 mid-block stop - the North York Centre station mentioned in video.
    NDP from 1990 to 1990 added 1 station (@ Sheppard) and a 2km extension.
Conservatives from 1995 to 2003 added 5 stations and 5 km extension.
Now there is a lot going on.

You forgot to mention that the Tories built bugger-all from 1975 onward. The same people who promised us pie in the sky in public transit when they gutlessly caved in on things like the Spadina and completing the Gardiner eastward to the 401 did NOTHING to compensate us for those deletions. Bill Davis's biggest failure.

I modified the map (got off Wikipedia) at 25:00 a few years ago by adding the Eglinton Crosstown and changing the track alignment of the TYSSE. Cool to see my work online, even if it was only an addition to someone else's.

The fact that Line 2 is being extended to Sheppard and not just to STC definitely gives the impression that they want to extend line 4. I mean obviously Doug Ford does with his plan that he put out but i mean there would literally be no other reason to have line 2 terminate at Sheppard. It's just a matter of getting the project funded and such. Also they would surely have to extend line 4 west to Sheppard West to fix the logistical problem and connect the western branch of line 1 with line 4 allowing better train movement and allowing line 4 trains access to Wilson with only some trains stored at Davisville similar to how line 2 stores most trains at Greenwood but stores a handful at Keele

I do love your stuff. It’s really well researched. The pace could be a bit quicker but I listen at 1.5 and stop to look at maps. 😊
The biggest and most impactful transit project in Toronto I think could be a Midtown express regional rail line using the Dupont rail corridor; with connections to the Brampton-Kitchener & Barrie Lines around a new Dupont west station and terminating at the old Summerhill (North Toronto) Station. It could extend into Mississauga and follow the current Milton line until it deviates into a tunnel to Missausauga City Centre connecting with the Hurontario LRT and the MiWay BRT.
Further extensions west to Milton and east to Scarborough could further offer a rapid express connection across the GTA.
The way the city is growing, we keep building yesterday’s plans too late and need to be forward thinking. Faster travel on a regional level is what the city needs I would argue. The current GO RER project is a good first step and would LOVE you to do a video on that given it is the largest transit project in Canadian history. Not to mention way too unknown given its size! Thanks!

Very good video. It wasn't mentioned that the stations were built full length 500 feet for six car trains, but the platforms only finished for the four car trains currently operated. This precludes any operation of a "Shepard-Downtown Express" without a station transfer, and from an operational standpoint Sheppard and Yonge trainsets cannot be interchanged.

The city dawdled on urban planning depending on cars when i was a teenager. Because we lived at Lawrence and the DVP getting anywhere fast on hus and subway was long, and got longer by the time I finished university in 1984. Post road stopped Lawrence busses reaching subway and infact for my childhood years forced 2 ticket fare because we were forced down to Eglinton Ave a new zone....darn rich post road! In the 70s as teens we said Ellington needed something faster, and we needed something going north in the east end. Now I'm retired, left the city and still the same old traffic issues.

The Oriole GO station was supposed to be connected with Leslie station right after the Sheppard line opened. I don't remember the details, but I believe GO and the TTC, at the time, (Metrolinx didn't exist yet) couldn't agree on who would pay for the moving costs. Though, as long as the Sheppard line remained incomplete, there was no urgency to connect the two stations.

I think you should have mentioned that the Line 4 eastern extension would have stayed along Shepard instead of dipping down to Scarborough Town Centre. Since the Line 2 will likely be extended to Sheppard, having the terminus and interchange of both lines at Sheppard and McCowan.

  • @MateodeJovel

    Just a minor nitpick
Oriole GO station was actually shifted north, as the platform's north end now currently sits at Esther Shiner Blvd rather than underneath the 401. It's not the full way to Leslie yet, but it is now a short 2 minute walk between them. Perhaps in another 18 years they'll finish its glacial migration

I wonder if the current Yonge-Sheppard station had dropped the centre platform, and dropped one of the connections between Sheppard and Yonge line - could they built the extension to Sheppard West?
And like Willowdale - leaving the Faywood (and maybe Bathurst) for later.
FYI - I am aware of some drawings for the Sheppard East line. But Don Mills to Consumers is missing. www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2012/ex/bgrd/backgroundfile-44984.pdf
If anyone has a link to the drawings for the missing portion, I would appreciate getting it.
