Me I'm so bored
me
Same but it’s kinda interesting
Summary:
- open air
- 3000 spectators, most standing in front of stage
- 1 penny entrance, extra penny for roof, extra penny for chair with cushoin
- sixpence gets you a chair behind the stage, and lets ppl see you lol
- no artificial lighting
- no sets
- no front curtain, but there was a curtain space in the back to reveal people
- just a platform with the actors, no mics etc
- canopy held up by two columns: rain protection & it's painted with stars and conveys the heaven
- costumes were super important
- male-only
- ages 12-20 usually
- trapdoor below stage to express hell, and other things underground
- devices to do descents did exist, just not as much
if you’re here because you want to be and not because your teacher made you watch this, congrats you’re better than all of us

Me and my mom were at the grand opening of the re-built Globe Theater in June 1997. In fact, our seats were only about 20 feet away from the Queen herself that night.
My mom also bought 3 of those name stones that go along the outside of the theater. One with her name, my name, and my dad’s name who had passed away years before.
Throughout the 90's, my mom was very involved in Chicago with the fundraising for the rebuilding of The Globe. It was such a huge passion for her.
Unfortunately, my mom now is very sick and I think I’m going to lose her soon. I just wanted to pay tribute to her here and say that the Globe Theater has always been so special to her and one day I’ll come back here with my kids and show them those name stones and tell them how their Nannan helped build this place.
I love you mom ♥️
I hope you are still in this world with you and your mom ❤❤
What I learned
Theater had no artificial lighting
-no curtain/no illustration
It's a platform, on platform are the actors(they have a powervoice)
Talented actors ages 12-20
The theater held 2,000-3,000 ppl
The theater paid more for costumes that the play
My teacher made me watch this 🤬

Professor Greenblatt provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the original Globe Theatre. He is both engaging and incredibly knowledgeable!
The theatre were open air and accommodate 3,000 standing around the stage
Money to get in was put in a box hence where the term box office comes from
Depending on what you pay, you’ll have a different seat
Lowest will let you stand in the gallery
A bit more will give you a cushion
Highest will allow you to sit behind stage or even on stage
No use of artificial lighting, sets or curtains
Use of powerful voices as well as good memory
Two columns holding a canopy in the stage
Most valuable thing was a costume
Costume carried symbolic meaning
All female roles in a play were played by boys rather than women
Women weren’t expected to be good actors
The canopy on stage would often be painted to represent the heaven amongst stars
Just like there is a heaven, there is also a hell in the space between the stage and audience
🙏
u a real one 🙏
thank you so much 💖
Grazie sei un tesoro🙏🤲🙏
I love you
Yes we get it your teacher made you watch this

Online School? Teacher told you to watch this? 🙌🙌🙌
What they tell you: "Shakespeare is the most widely read author in the English language and his plays are performed all over the English speaking world!"
What they don't tell you: "...because people are forced to read and watch it."
This is a good video. Good info about staging. Quickly delivered and none of the made up stuff about "Shakespeare"s life.
I am a teacher and I am watching it first. Then I will force all my students to watch it.
I have another 2 globes down here, but i aint showing them off like this.
Has everyone here been asked to watch this video by their teachers??
Me too...
I didn't listen to a word that man said. I wonder if my teacher is looking at the comment section right now wondering why people are so upset.
A fine, concise summary of the stagecraft used in Shakespeare's time. Well worth watching if you have any interest in Shakespeare or his time.

Thank you for such a concise and useful overview of the Globe Theatre!
1. When was Shakespeare’s own Globe Theatre built?
2. What privileges did you have if you had another penny?
3. Where could you get if you had sixpence?
4. Why did the actors need to have powerful voices?
5. Why were the costumes valuable?
6. How was the canopy decorated? What did it symbolize?
7. What Shakespeare’s play is trap door used in?
8. Why was it important to change the costumes?
9. What other parts of the theatre could the actors use?
10. What helped to produce some illusory effects?
You know I'm 31 years old and I had a history teacher in high school that was actually really good and made me appreciate Shakespeare by explaining that everyone in this theater was drunk and yelling all the time, but I read this comment and just like that I'm miserable and I'm turning off the video now.
I love u
Thank so much
Thanks Mr Neil, love this video 👍
I have liked this video.
Learnt a lot about the seat arrangements and the main stage of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
The narration is also very helpful for Shakespeare's lovers.
Thanks for uploading this.

Londoners, it seems, were indifferent as to the site of the original theatre, and it took an American actor (Sam Wanamaker) to launch and steer the project to rebuild the Globe.
