  • In this video, I run through the checks I undertake prior to restringing a badminton racket. I highly recommend you inspect your grommets frequently to reduce the risk of string breakage.
    I have also written an article about Badminton Racket Maintenance which you can read here: badminton-coach...

    Hi Paul, thanks for the great video! I have a question, when I've been stringing brand new rackets I found several grommets moving out and then the string snapping. Do you have any tips to stop this?

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  3 года назад +1

      You can finger test the grommet quickly before commencing stringing. Try to replace any loose grommets but if the replacements are also loose then all you can do if keep your finger on the head of the grommet to stop it moving

    I recently purchased a set of rackets on Amazon, played only 8 times, and already have some inner grommets separate, racket companies are doing a shoddy jobs with the stringing and building of those rackets. I am a beginner player, so no hard smashing, no smashing at all, I see so many rackets with separated inner grommets that fall off the edge.

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  2 года назад

      If you bought a set of rackets, was this a cheap set or do you mean you bought reasonably expensive rackets? There’s a difference in quality of all materials including grommets

    Hi Paul
    I replace the grommets regularly but the racket performance seems affected. The shop only has the cheap grommets. Do you agree? it is also difficult to find the oem grommets. Appreciate your feedback. Thanks

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  7 лет назад +3

      Even the cheap grommets perform reasonably well. The key is to understand where string break occurs for you. Inspect the area really well as there could be a reason why. Sometimes a simple mishit will result in breakage. There is nothing you can do about that but it's always worth inspecting the area, especially on a clean break.
      Sometimes a stringer has a reel of string that performs below what is expected. The string appears to be more brittle for some reason and there is nothing that can be done except to return the string.

    • @andikahairuman9464

      Paul Stewart Advanced Badminton Coach Thanks Paul. My issue actually not with the string break. The string attached with the cheap grommets tend to have a lower ping sound and when i hit the birdie, it doesn't really create a good repulsion. The same racket, with the original grommets, the same string, same tension, same machine, and the same stringer, it can delivered a nice ping sound and i enjoy the repulsion a lot.

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  7 лет назад +2

      That's very interesting and something I have not come across before. So the cheap grommets in your situation acted as dampeners on the string's performance. You should ask your stringer to comment on this and also let me know privately where he bought the grommets so I can avoid having the same issue.

    • @andikahairuman9464
      @andikahairuman9464 7 лет назад +1

      Paul Stewart Advanced Badminton Coach I asked the shop owner and he said he can only afford to buy cheap grommets US$1 for a set of grommets (made in china, no brand). The original grommet yonex costs about US$12. I live in Jakarta where most of the people doesn't want to pay extra for high quality grommets. There also oem grommets from Taiwan, not sure about the brand. It costs US$3 per set and feel softer compare with the cheap one. According to the stringer, this is a known issue and his workaround is to let the racket unused for 2 days before we can play after grommets being replaced, but still, from my own experience, the result isn't better. Getting the original grommets also difficult here.

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  7 лет назад +1

      I understand. When players require a restring it is difficult to keep costs down when the racket is in such poor condition. The hope is that if grommets are changed then string life will be increased. Additionally a racket should only need a complete change of grommets once a year for most players, but more often for higher standard and professional players.

    Hi Paul, You said in the video you would show how to cut the grommet later but didn't do that. I am worried that the way I cut them it tends to leave them a bit sharp which defeats the object?

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  5 лет назад

      I just cut with a knife to get a clean cut. Occasionally I use my string cutting pliers if i have to change a grommet whilst stringing the racket.

    Is it ok to have slightly loose gromets in new racket, Its coming out easily with hand

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  Год назад

      Slightly loose May be because the hole has enlarged over time. As long as the grommet is protecting the string, you’re ok

  • @TPToE
    @TPToE 5 лет назад +1

    Paul, what do you suggest doing if the grommets have flared or split on the inside of the frame? Is it still possible to use grommet pliers in those cases? It's very difficult to push them through, as they tend to just warp and flare even further.

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  5 лет назад

      you can use a knife of cutter to cut the grommet and then push through with a grommet tool. Alternatively use a fresh grommet to try and push the old one out by pushing from the inside of the frame. As soon as the head is raised, you can easily remove it.

    Hi paul pls tell how to repair a bent racquet head ,mistake during stringing h

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  5 лет назад

      Sandeep - is this a metal headed racket or carbon? If it's metal headed and out of shape, all you can do is restring correctly. It is unwise to try and bend the head into shape again.

    Hi Paul, quick question about replacing double grommets (the ones where strings pass twice):
    Would you happen to know how I could "cap," so to speak, the double grommets from the inside of my racket? All 12 of my racket's upper double grommets are completely worn out, and I would like to replace them myself without using the usual flare-it tool. Thank you!

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  6 лет назад

      This is a great question. It is difficult to cap or flare grommets without the appropriate tools. I cut the grommets and don't worry about finishing them off because I do not have the tools. These grommets don't last very long so I simply replace them as and when I need to

    • @TheBadmintonCoach
      @TheBadmintonCoach  Год назад

      They are different sizes. The small holes are 2.1 the larger holes are generally 2.6 or 2.7
      You simply try them. If the fit is too loose you may have the wrong grommet
