It's not a crate engine either. It's a stock sbc. Crate engines are called crate engines because they can be shipped to your house pretty much complete in a wooden crate
Funny I just bought a 1985 SS elcamino that sat for a year started it and it was running rough then it cleared out running good but made a mistake let it run out of fuel so now my filter is toast with trash so I watched this to know how to fix it.
What does it mean when gas all the way to the charcoal canister evaporator after changing filter? Will the charcoal canister go bad if I get gas in it?
Great video. Don't think I got the 1" nut locked in with an adjustable wrench and saw I was twisting the fuel line while trying to loosen the 5/8" or 7/8" smaller nut.
@@sean2148 Thanks Sean for the reply. However, my son and his friend stopped by the garage not long ago and his friend wanted to buy it, and I sold it. He is extremely happy with it. @@MechanicLife I have a box chevy caprice 84 . And that part has been giving me trouble for 3 days . Now I know which tools to use . I spray PB blaster on it and it will not come off. But I wasnt using a box wrench. Now I'm try that to take off.
Car is dying when put in gear, but fine when Idling & Neutral, and when in higher gears and speeds. Just in R and 1st gear in D after going into gear does it wanna die. Fuel filter or pump problem?
Go easy on the 1” insert when installing it into the soft carby material that's been though thousands of hot/cold cycles and becomes brittle.....+ Crap design! This is my second time I’ve replaced my filter. But this time it’s leaking gas I have it closed and tight as possible where the filter spring area. Do I need to replace that plastic ring where the threads meet into the carb ?
You can absolutly replace a fuel line. You order them from the autoparts store and they should be a direct replacement. I am not sure what you are talking about on the fuel filter being bent. Can you fire me some photos?
Lukes Garage what the filter fits into autozone nor O’Reilly had it , I ordered one from Advanced Autos but it was too small . I’m talm bou the part your fiddling with in the video btw
So you got no fuel that came out when you removed yours,,,,. But I went to remove mine and I'm getting tons of fuel... To the point it seems like it's not going to stop coming out
I miss my dad, he knew exactly how to remove a nut without missing.
Does this carburetor have a spring you put in before gas filter is inserted?
Yes
@@lukelangbehn5432 If that spring is missing. .as mine was from a faulty installation by a shade tree mechanic. . .would this impede the flow of gasoline to the carb? I'm thinking it would.
Doing this too... Thanks for pointing out the check valve... Went back for the right filter
You bet!
That carb is a 4 barrel not a 2 barrel like what you called it. hence why its called a quadrajet.

I second that. The 2bbl vs the 4bbl quadrajet is obvious the moment you look at it lol.
LMFAO
I agree. He just lost a lot of credibility by calling it a 2bbl.
You've had the truck since you were 17 and didn't know it had a quadrajet 4 barrel on it? Weird.
I think you missed a spring that goes in the carburetor to press the close end of the filter. It's still a good video. Thsnks for sharing.
Yes, i also heard that there is a spring....
@@GJJC13 there is a small coil spring in mine at the end of filter
Flare nut wrenches would be helpful on this task.
That’s funny. I’m watching this because I just got my 1984 el Camino SS which was my first vehicle purchase at 17 yrs old. LoL

Very informative, but how exactly do you do this on a 84 chevy G20 van?! Its hard as hell to maneuver and properly do it

Glad it helped
@@MechanicLife yeah finally got it done. Seemed way easier on the video but it always goes like that doing it the 1st time
I am restoring a 1985 305 el camino, where did you get the coupler/nylon gasket? I cannot find it anywhere.
They were able to look it up at Autozone and had it at the store for me.
Dorman makes a gasket kit with 5 nylon o rings and 5 red ones ( whatever the material is) part # 55143.

@@TheLab89 Good Luck!
would like to see you install an inline fuel filter---yur videos are very well done
Thanks!
If my car sits for a day or two, I always have to use starter fluid. Will changing this filter help with that?
Where can i order the inlet fuel connector, and fuel line
Autozone
You speak of using a 7/8" wrench on the fuel line to carb inlet fitting. It's a 5/8" need.
Cool old rig.. hold on to it man, vehicles today just don't compare
Yup. I have had this one since I was 16. Dont plan on letting er go. We have been through a lot together;)

3/8

im having no start when cold issues i thought i put the fuel in backwards i dont know if the check valve goes in the carb or the housing
Housing from fuel line. Should only be able to go in 1 way
isn't there a spring in there too
Asking if there's a spring in there on a carb video is pretty funny. A spring in WHERE?? Lmao
Adam Whitt
There is a spring on the carb side of the filter
I don’t know

Got a part number on that nylon o ring by chance?
Negative. I found a kit that had a bunch in it and replaced with a like for like.
Gotcha appreciate it Napa auto parts is confident they found the right one so I’m waiting to pick it up tomorrow
Just an FYI the nylon o ring typically come in a carburetor kit
Yep it did I appreciate it
Best to use a line wrench.
My fuel line broke today can it be replaced
My fuel filter was bent up can that cause gas not going to carburetor

No problem!
Thank you Luke
