    This video has been determined "advertiser unfriendly," even after we requested a manual review, which one would have expected to over-ride the robots? So, an actual human being looked at the video and decided this bolt action video is not suitable for advertising.

    When I was stationed in Germany as the CO of a unit in Bavaria, I met some German officers and they invited me and 3 of my Sailors to a shooting match.
    Simple contest: one shot from a Gewehr 98. Closest to the bull wins. I have to say I was VERY impressed with the recoil of the rifle. Quite a good kick.
    The winner of the contest? An elderly gentleman who had carried a Mauser in the WW2 Wehrmacht. He nailed that bull right down the middle.
    It was great fun!

      The military doctrine was different, the germans kinda stuck to WW1 tactics and tought the heart of the squad was a rapid fire machine gun that can suppress an entire open field with riflemen to support it.
      When they finally came to their sense, they invented the motherfucking assault rifle.

    • @MrDragonPig
      @MrDragonPig 7 лет назад +10

      +Gianni Carrea They did use the LMG support tactic, but I think they actually invented the fast movement and named it 'Blitzkrieg'. One British soldier that served in WW2 said that in the beginning they still dug trenches but that didn't work due to the German's new tactics, and over they came...

      i think a straight bolt handle helps the bolt pull straight back as opposed to a bent handle where you might be levering on the sides of the reciever.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 6 лет назад

      I have to disagree, as the 98k and the M48 I own have much smoother actions than my Gewehr 98s. I've polished the Gewehrs to clean up the action a bit, but that straight bolt is clunky in operation. When production cost is critical (as it was during the Karabiner production) it is revealing when a more expensive option is utilized over an existing style. In other words, they wouldn't have opted for a more time consuming to produce curved bolt if the straight bolt wasn't problematic in comparison.

    • @FactoryofRedstone
      @FactoryofRedstone 6 лет назад

      The bend handle shouldn't have any effect to that, it was just build in for easier and faster reload, so if it would be worse, in that regard the wouldn't have put it in to beginn with.
      I think Marvin is right, that the time when the rifles are produced are relevant. Because the quality during wartime is going down of course. I heard that the best quality (for the K 98k) is in the late 30s where there were still enough material, but also the production methods where more advanced then in earlier years of production.

    Beautiful old piece. The Turkish K. Kale Mausers very closely resemble the G98, although it has a more traditional rear sight. I do think the Turkish Mausers tend to have much more beautiful wood, though.
    The Springfield 1903 might have been derived from the Mauser, but it's definitely a much smoother gun. It's much easier to open the action and there's less play when operating the bolt.

    I actually had a very similar story, I recently picked up a Gew98 myself, me and my friend were going gun store to gun store as he was looking for an MPX, after 4 stores with nothing really interesting, we went to this one really disorganized gun store that was way out of the way to get to, but they just so happened to have the MPX my friend was looking for, while he was checking out I was just browsing around and found it just way in the corner surrounded by other old Winchesters and Remingtons, it was in great condition, had matching serial numbers on everything with the exception it was missing its rear iron sight, picked it up for like a nickle and got a replacement sight.

    Easily the best bolt action rifle of it's age. Maybe even the best ever. Some will say the Lee Enfield is superior but they are dead wrong. The only advantage the Enfield has over the Mauser is a high rate of fire. Literally every other aspect is straight up inferior. More prone to jams, shorter effective range, lower accuracy; the list can go on. Nah, give me a Mauser any day of the week.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  8 лет назад +100

      The Lee Enfield is great, but once you empty the magazine, you still have to load five again TWICE in order to get the 10-round capacity. Generally, it's not going to actually allow twice as many rounds to be fired during the same time period, except maybe on the first magazine. Plus, that funky Lee Enfield clip is not as smooth to operate as the Mauser clips are.

      Don't fix it. It likely works just fine as-is and you will significantly decrease the value doing something as simple as refinishing the stock in the slightest.

    • @paulshayter1113
      @paulshayter1113 8 лет назад

      Take it to a competent gunsmith to have it checked to see if it's capable of being fired as is, you really don't want to change anything from it's original/ brought back condition. Even something as simple as refinishing the stock could really lower it's value. Also see if you can find the "bring back" papers he would have been issued (unless he snuck it back home), those papers can be very valuable and possibly double the value of the gun.

    • @simonni4483
      @simonni4483 8 лет назад +13

      Germany had a surplus of Gew.98's following the first world war and because the Versailles treaty prohibited them from having over a certain number of long rifles they simply turned down their bolt handles, removed the rear "Lange Visier" type sights with a conventional tangent leaf sight and they cut a a hole in the stock for a side sling, making it an "Karabiner 98B". Also do note that karabiner can also refer to a spring loaded hook that mountaineers and such use.
