I just bought a pottery wheel and was looking through RUclips for someone who I could learn from, glad I found your channel! Thank you for making the videos and inspiring all of us
That is Awesome! Congratulations on getting a pottery wheel. Welcome to the wonderful world of pottery crafting. Thank you, Utsav. I have over 100 videos for you to choose from including 30 different things beginners can make on the wheel. Here is the link for you. ruclips.net/user/PotteryCraftersvideos 😊
Gosh i love your chanel. I love your brand to. Sothing. Wish you had a twieter so i can show you what i made! Is not much but thanks for the tip of not washing it down the drain. You just saved my life for a beginer clay fan.
Thank you very much Marie, from France (Auvergne), for your very interesting videos and your sweetness in teaching us pottery. I really liked your video on clay recycling that I will put into practice. I have a suggestion for a future video: how do you clean the workshop, and not to clog the pipes with clay? Cleaning is an important part of the job and can be complicated when you don't have running water nearby... Thank you again for all your great vidéos !
You are so welcome! Hello from France 😍 What a wonderful country. That is a very good suggestion. There are different ways to dispose of clay slurry that I should share. The Gleco Trap System is one. Keeps the glaze and clay from clogging your pipes. Here is the link for you to check out geni.us/Ju9KG7
Yes you can! Here is a video on making colored clay ruclips.net/video/S0ThSoaCWvw/видео.htmlsi=J6iy2dhrqCaGDzT- Here is a video on making colored slip ruclips.net/video/95KkiwlOOko/видео.htmlsi=UeL97CWYGTRZsq_F and here is a video on a few things to make with colored slip. ruclips.net/video/troAU7Dt5yQ/видео.htmlsi=buvpjC_SfZFjQgvY I don't have anything on the things you can make with colored clay yet. Thanks for the idea. You can swirl the white and colored clay together and make a pattern. You can also add colored clay to your pottery and decorate it in different ways. It is always best to use the same clay body as your colored clay. 😊
Beginner here. I'm taking a class and last week alone I tried to make slip out of wet clay, glazed my green ware and trimmed a hole in my pot. Lol I learned so much in one day! I am determined to become good and if I ever make money I will donate because your are so so helpful to me. Thank you. I plan to make new slip this week and use vinegar. Do I have to put much? Should I add it before stain for getting correct consistency? Thanks again!!
Hi Emily. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. That's cute. I did the same thing the first time I made slip, LOL. You don't need much vinegar. Just a teaspoon for every cup of water. Just add the vinegar to your water. I would store your slip in a freezer bag. It lasts forever. You are going to be a great Potter. I think you will like this video. ruclips.net/video/7TcbmARt-TI/видео.html 😊
Hi Heidi. Good question. I don't use sodium silicate or soda ash in slip because it can be too harsh on my skin. I do have a magic water recipe in my slip post. It is #5 Here is the link for you to check out. potterycrafters.com/21-pottery-clay-slip-questions-answered/
Cool. Slipcasting is fun but can be tricky sometimes. It's all in the timing. Knowing how long to wait until you pour the rest of the slip out. I walked away too long once, and the mug turned out super thick. 😃
Sure. You need to add a deflocculant to your slip clay for slip casting. You can go to this post to questions #19 and #20 to help explain more. 😊 Here is the link for you. potterycrafters.com/21-pottery-clay-slip-questions-answered/
I want to coat the inside of my terra cotta bowls with mason colored slip. Can I use a lighter colored clay to color? How do you make terra cotta colored slip, since the clay is brick red. Thank you!
Hi, Tom, That is a very good question. No, you would not be able to the red brick clay. While it is always best to use the same clay for slip, you can still use different clay bodies. Just make sure the white clay is the same firing temperature. I would strongly suggest making a sample test tile and bisque fire the 2 clay bodies. If there are no cracks, then the two clay bodies are compatible.
Can I use porcelain slip for stoneware body? Try to use for wide brush painting with it or dipping such as ‘Bunchung’. What is main differences with making slip with raw materials? I really appreciated your video. You are a great teacher!!
Thank you, Chung. I would not recommend it because the 2 different clay bodies may not get along in the kiln. If they don't expand and contract together and have the same shrinkage rate, the clay will crack. You can, however, test firing. Try firing a small amount of the clays together in the kiln. If it works, then the shrinkage rate is the same. 😊
Thanks a lot, as always: clear, right to the point with optimal speed, intonation, simply perfect. And now is the question regarding using slip as a glue. I have seen 100 times my classmate using slip to attach two parts of clay together ( let's say handle to the mug) , still can't understand - what is wrong with the usual process: score, add water method ( the one I always use?). Is slip better or equal alternative?
Thank you. 😊 Good question. Many potters especially beginners use slip to attach the clay to ensure that it sticks together. But you can use just water if you have no issues with cracking. I did it a few times and once the handle separated from my mug. Now I don't take chances and always use slip to make sure my pieces stick together. 👍
Hi Marie, first time I glaze my pots most of them looks great but I noticed one thing. I see pinholes on my pieces. Pls help me how to prevent from pinholes. Thank you in advance 😊
I had the same problem. Firing to cone 5 and putting a 10 to 20 minute hold will help. this article should also help. Here is the link for you potterycrafters.com/what-causes-pinholes-in-pottery-glaze/
That is a very important question. Glazes can not used because they have a different composition. You can however use underglaze, stain or iron oxide. 😊
Very good question. Yes you can and I have many times, because clay slip and mason stains do not have any fluxes in them so nothing can melt on the kiln shelf. 👍
Does the shrinkage rate change within the same clay body depending on the batch? For example, I bought a clay body from Laguna clay and it has a shrinkate rate of 10% +/- 2%. After using the clay, I discovered it has a shrinkage rate of 12%. If I buy a new bag of this same clay body from Laguna, will it always have a 12% shrinkage rate or could the next bag have a 8% shrinkage rate? Thank you so much for all your lovely videos.
Good question. No, mold is good for clay. There is always a small amount of mold in clay. If you don't like the smell or are allergic to mold you can add a little bleach or vinegar.
Hi, this information was very helpful to me, I have a question though I am going to add a coloured slip to my leather hard piece but I'm not sure how long I leave the slip to dry before I start my Sgraffito technique? P.S I love your videos x
thank you for such an in-depth video! i made a drip design with slip but now i don’t like it. question.. is it possible to remove slip once it has dried?
Hello Marie only one question when I run from the slip casting my parts do not thicken enough my workshop is a little damp do you think that would be the reason
Hi Robert. Do you make your slip or buy it? You may have to wait longer before you pour it out of the mold. Check the top where you poured it in the mold once the clay is at least a quarter-inch thick you can pour it out. 👍
Yes, you are right the humid it is the longer it will take. Plus casting slip is formulated to dry slower. It also depends on the size of the mold. We live in the desert and friend has to wait until the next day sometimes.
Hi, great video, thank you! I work with slips and manipulate the clay afterwards but I’m finding the slip has starting to crack during the drying process when I add 10% turquoise stain. My recipe is is 50% ball clay 50% China clay, the white and black slips do not crack. Would there be something I could add to make the slip more plastic please?
Thank you, Jane. You can try some Epsom Salt. Here is a link for you to check it out geni.us/Z1Yj It can increase plasticity and increases the attraction of the platelets in the slip, causing the clay to become flocculated. Desolve in water first. Be careful to add only a small amount at a time. 😊
Really enjoying your videos, and now feel confident to try to make colored slip. BUT..., how do I measure the amount of dry stain when the slip is already wet? Some say 8% stain to the slip, but isn't that for dry clay powder? I don't know how much water is in the slip, so how do I measure?
Thank you. That is a good question. In my making colored slip video, I made the slip first and then added the color. So you would know how much you can add to wet clay, here is the link for you ruclips.net/video/95KkiwlOOko/видео.html the wet clay is around 4:40 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Thank you so much! Did actually see the video before, but must have forgotten 😖 Now I'm ready 👍😁 Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing ❤

No, I haven't. Thank you for the suggestion, Pamela.
