  • Kantara, the low budget sandalwood movie is running successfully all over India and is close to amassing Rs. 160 crore. But what makes this film special is a compelling storyline that deals with topics like tribal rights, caste oppression, environmental protection and forest land encroachment with stunning visuals and music.
But what Bollywood is lacking that it is unable to cook such a hit recipe? We analyse this and much more in this episode of The Deshbhakt

There are lots of stories attached to these devi devtas.....some devta have idols, shapes, temples....some dont.

Lately, Marathi film industry has found a formula "to monetize Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj". Now, making films about him every other weekend just to make money is a disrespect. The only industry making "real" movies on "real" issues is southern film industry, Period.

Never underestimate the common people. They can see through the intentions of the storyteller. In this movie people saw and believed that storyteller loves Hinduism, cultures, and traditions. That is why any criticism of caste hierarchy in the movie is taken positively. If the same movie is made by woke or left, they would show that tribal customs are not part of Hinduism, which they have tried so many times in the past. People are smart, they can see the intentions behind the criticism, and they can see through those who love Hinduism, India, its languages, and Its Culture.

This movie Kantara really shows the culture very authentically. And I'm proud to be a Kannadaiga. The real reason why Bollywood is very much behind is that they focus mostly on urban stories in Mumbai and other big cities while South Cinema and other states cinema focuses on villages and authentic Indian cultures. If Bollywood can have guts of making at least one movie based on Indian culture roots, then I'll be happy. And on the other hand, I've seen several BJP supporters discriminating on Twitter and social media by doing the Bollywood vs South Cinema stuff. I say that all people should watch all South Indian movies because it really respects all religions and cultures without offending anybody's religion, culture, beliefs and sentiments. It's really and literally made for everybody.

    The review was great.
My only issue with this review being a Tuluva and from Karnataka is the usage of the word “superstition” for the local beliefs.
These rituals are still very much part of our life in Coastal Karnataka and it’s hurtful to call a region’s belief system as “superstition”.
Unless you can bring yourself to call every other major religion in the world a “superstition”, please refrain from calling any other faith the same.. however small in majority the believers of that faith are.
Tuluvas have continued this tradition which has existed in symbiosis with modernization for more than 5000 years. We will continue to practice it proudly and unapologetically.
Tuluvas don’t equate faith as a deterrent to modernization, rather a motivation towards righteousness and betterment. For us, faith and modernization are not at loggerheads, but abstract.

It's a devotional movie for people from Dakshina Kannada & around. Even people from other states with tribal or other native backgrounds have liked the movie mostly because they can relate to their own cultures back home.

Absolutely spot on observation, few people are so blinded by their hatred for a particular political party, or an ideology, or a particular way of life that they fail to see whats crystal clear to everybody. To say the core emotion of movie is that it raises questions about rights of tribals and how it challenges established beliefs and inequalities in society is complete bogus. He only just wants to push his agenda

I do agree some of the south films have a regressive attitudes towards women. But there are also films which have strong women characters in south Indian films especially in Malayalam where there are films like How old are you, Aby, Forensic, Memories and so on.

Sir Please watch "Great Indian Kitchen" its on prime -- I could not watch it first time because it was so painful to see how Indian men behave & how we treat our mother, wife ,sisters etc
its a Malayalam movie (perhaps most matured movie Industry in India today -- they produce all kind of movies serious to light hearted commercial pot boilers all entertaing )
Hence Respectfully disagree on "regressive attitude towards women" statement I guess it applies across where women are shown as eye candy etc

Kantara was THE best movie (in any language) I've watched in the last decade.. in theatres, at festivals, at home.. And I watch a LOT of good movies. It's SHOCKING why its not INdia's Oscar entry. I bet it would have had a decent chance of actually winning a few awards.
The story, screenplay, cinematorgraphy, and acting.. Truly breathtaking! And the best part that this wasn't a movie about some far off novel concept or superhumans or even an epic. It was a story of the people of a particular region of Karnataka that has resonayed with the common people of the entire country. It's a classic story of good and evil, of greed.
The last performance by Rishab Shetty.. some of the very best acting I've ever seen in Indian cinema.

These local deities always want to establish good relationship between nature and Humans. These deities are bridge between Humans and Nature. Beautiful representation of Feudalism, Caste discrimination and Faith. Loved Kantara from Himachal Pradesh We have many local deities here and we call them devta too🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙏🏽.
