  • Just as millions of iPhones and iPads have been scrapped due to Activation lock, we are now seeing 2018+ MacBooks scrapped at recyclers as well, due to the "feature" being enabled on those devices.

      Exactly! Apple's own policy even states that they can unlock the device if it's not in lost mode, that you just need to show some kind of proof of purchase (and Apple's support even says that places like eBay are even acceptable). The problem is Apple doesn't care about these machines going to waste, their unlock process is vague, and they isolate the unlock team from the rest of the company,

    Everytime I run across an activation locked MacBook or Apple product, I tweet a picture to Apple and complain. I run across a lot too. They contribute to the ewaste problem and scrapping perfectly MacBooks for activation locks is a slap in the face to people out there who can't afford tech. We are throwing away or using parts off of good laptops that other people, less fortunate could use. I'd rather see them donated to charity.

      Nah they gotta be losing at least 2 out of 10 users when they forgot ID or get scammed trying to buy used, the user might end up going for windows laptop after the experience, then when ready to buy new they'll likely still to what they know works
      They are losing out on potential customers that aren't already deeply invested in the ecosystem or obsessed with apple status
      Most normal people just buy something and if it doesn't work out will buy something else unless they feel a need for it
      Though it happening on devices that aren't reported stolen because account was left on it or the email was forgotten is anti-consumer and should be illegal though, like hardly anyone I know keeps purchase receipts more then a few months and if you didn't buy from the Apple store them is no garentee the serial number is on the receipt so if the box was thrown out your stuffed.
      Also have you ever tried helping non tech literate people do something as simple as logging into an account, or resetting passwords
      There be a bunch if accounts with erased macbooks linked to them that are still activated and they never remove the old devices from the list or don't log I to the accounts again
      After awhile someone might change email or phone number them forgot the password and account is permanently lost which happens quite frequently, I have 6 google emails I lost access to due to a phone number that is in the void and google locking the account despite me knowing my password. So it's not out of the question, also I got really unlucky with my apple account and when asking for an old account to be deleted and email changed on account I lost access too, the rep deleted my current account that email was supposed to be changed on and put the email on the account that was supposed to be deleted which wasn't mine so now I'm stuck with someone else's apple account I can't reset security questions on and my account was nuked but it's also in my name and has my DOB 😂 it's a mess

    Apple should really be sewed for doing this. Apples Number one reason for doing this is to destroy the used macbook marketplace to prevent used devices to be resold. Their goal is for people to not buy a used device but rather go buy a brand new one. The less used devices sell, the more money they make.

Since i guess Apple is checking the id of the laptop from their database and if matched icloud account is different than the current one, then they block the laptop remotely. But instead of blocking all unmatched icloud accounts, they could have create blacklist and let users notify them if their laptop has been stolen and put their icloud and related ID of their laptop, and block laptops among black list . But that's obvious apples concern is not stolen devices , they want ppl to nit buy second hand laptops but new one .

      Many companies are paid to handle the "disposal", and companies who pay for this service want them destroyed without having a slight idea that their data isn't that valuable or vulernable. Also many places buy these items-phones in bulk and when the user forgets to give it back clear of the Apple ID, it's bricked. Even though the user never bought it, their company did. I'm not a red team type, but can't we flash the roms and just plan on wiping the drive after? Are we missing an unencrypted rom dump to put back in? Some of that hardware is nice enough to build from metal up IMHO. I'm not a mac guy but it'd be a nice Linux/BSD machine. FOSS community will prevail even if it takes too long 😅

      Does it run natively on the computer, or in some sort of virtual machine? And will it work on an Activation Locked M1? Last I heard it could run on T2 Macs but not Apple silicon@@goofballbiscuits3647

    • @goofballbiscuits3647
      @goofballbiscuits3647 11 месяцев назад

      @RDKLInc I haven't personally used it. I was given one of these FW locked macs and started researching. It looks like the same engineers who have done major reversals in the past are officially on-board. I do go to Defcon and have heard a few things that will be exciting. As of now, it's an alpha with what's built being functional. Apple added a feature to install other OSs a while ago. I was told picking the Windows install option and using a Linux/BSD iso just works. That's easy enough if you can actually unlock the device. Hell, maybe I will hop on board. Talk about a project I can get behind. I'd be a better fit for fw/bootloader reversal/development but... it takes a community! I wouldn't send these to a landfill just yet.
