Does changing this alter the phone in any way? Does it make it slower or make the phone lose battery quicker?
Maybe, I mean your iPhone would have to display more things in your homescreen but is not a significant different I suppose.

It doesn’t make anything transparent so in other words,didn’t work.And the video is too fast in some parts,you cut out big chunks of the video and we miss many steps.

You need to take an ss of your homescreen then put it on the transparent option and it will size with with whatever widget you are using
