I am now in Canada which is also a beautiful country but not to the extent of Mauritius and maybe I will go back one day.
this was the most terrifying experience of my life. we had a great guide but with my fear of heights I really struggled in some sections. especially the final ascent is extremely steep and risky. views are breath taking and definitely worth it but maybe avoid climbing all the way to the top to avoid the scariest bit
Nice video! I think you should have talked more about why Le Morne was chosen as a World Heritage Site and the slaves' fight for freedom. There are more information about that on the Unesco website.
When I was there a local surfer guy we met at Tamarin took us on a tour of the island, he told us the story that the local police at the time when slavery was abolished went to inform the people that were hiding out on the mountain, and through fear of being re enslaved elected to climb to the summit and lept to their deaths. Really sad story.
By calling them slaves you turn them into objects, these were African people, brutally hunted down, captured and chained by Europeans, and made to work from 24/7 on the sugar plantations and many fought back and some did indeed throw themselves off the mountain to escape the harsh reality imposed upon them and their families by the Europeans
Saw a kid/boy about 10, with dad near the top, they were descending when I climbed it just after it was open to the public. The father had a rope round the kids chest though and keeping hold of him while he was in a difficult part.
Hey! Please tell me - You can actually climb there without a guide, yes? We are about to go there this May but I wonder if there is any problem with getting through this gate/fence somewhere in the middle. I don't mean physical but legal way :)
Hi there, You absolutely can climb there without a guide. Just be mindful of the weather as if it has rained a lot, it can be very slippery. The gate should be open too...unless it's after hours. Have fun :)

@@brandyhernandez61 Best thing I guess would be to go to Tamarin by bus from Quatre-Bornes, and then take a taxi there, and get them to fetch you after three or four hours. Type "taxi Tamarin mauritius" and google and you'll get contact numbers. Take the number of taxi services in other regions for added safety. Tamarin to Le Morne should not be more than 15 Dollars one way.

Is the ascent trail well signposted or is it left to the climber to find their own way up?
There are signs, and honestly, I think La Tourelle is a tougher climb.

We did it by ourselves, but yes, one can take a guide and for many people it would be a good option.

It took around 3 hours (round trip). We did take our time though as I was filming.
