He really hit the nail on the head here. The truth is, if I’m being honest with myself, I’ve been a coward most of my life when it comes to almost everything I’ve done. I’ve always given myself an out. I’ve made excuses, and that way if I fail, I don’t really have to take responsibility for it. Now I’m 40 years old, and I think I have enough time left to really start to change that part of who I am. Thank you Mr. Hall.

Discipline = freedom. I've been living in my teenage years for far too long "I only want to do the things I want to do now", I'm not in the place I want to be in life right now... I'm going to try discipline it may bring more fulfillment

'show me someone who's super well adjusted and i'll show you someone who's probably not a high achiever", hmmm, i'll take super well adjusted over being a high achiever any day, why? because to be a high achiever means all eggs have to go in that one basket, they have to be obsessed, which means everything else suffers. so what good is it to have a high level of success in one area to the detriment of all others? and what happens when you can no longer do that thing you've been obsessed with for so long either through injury or old age? what then? that's a recipe for deep depression folks.
Good interview though, he's quite the talker. it never ceases to amaze me how eloquent and fluently fighters talk given the punishment their brains must receive on a day to day basis. i have nothing but the highest respect for MMA fighters, they are a joy to behold. And congrats on your last win Ryan, you make it look so easy, probably the most relaxed fighter i know.

I keep coming back to this interview now and then since I first found it back in 2015 or so. Is talent important for high-level competition? Yeah, sure. But you're not going to get ANYWHERE in life without dedication and heart. It's about showing up and doing the work every day no matter how you're feeling. While my friends are playing CSGO or at the bar, I'm studying for an IT certification to put myself into a better career with upward mobility and opportunity for good pay. When they're sleeping off a hangover I'm already awake exercising outside, because physical fitness is important to me. I am constantly reading to improve my knowledge about the world around me. Would it be more fun to load up Steam and play video games for the rest of the night after I get off work, instead of sit down to study? Yeah. But how would I feel in 20 years when I'm still making shit pay and worrying about how I'm going to retire? That is what the Dune quote means. Being disciplined doesn't mean you can never have fun, it just means that you CONTROL how much fun you have and balance it with shit that needs to get done.

Really important nuance there because when people say “don’t focus on the result” people assume that means don’t try as hard. It’s important to give it all you have in competition so that, win, lose or draw, you know where you stand and what you need to get better. Which is why we do things like BJJ in the first place really. Not necessarily winning all the time but rather improving all the time.

  • @kcwliew

This is so interesting... I think inadvertently he's highlighted a psychological characteristic of Jon Jones. JBJ always gave himself a psychological out - he would go partying and not train too hard so if he lost he could say 'oh well I didn't really try that hard or I was on cocaine'... How Hall explains that's actually a cowardly way of thinking is actually pretty spot on.
Of course I'm the same way. I'll happily admit to being a coward but it still hit me hard. I'm a pretty ordinary guy with an ordinary life paying an ordinary mortgage with simple goals. It IS however a strange attitude to find in the person so many people still consider the GOAT in terms of fighting.
In my opinion the true goat has to be DC... man never gave himself an excuse. He doesn't have any of the physical advantages that Jones has but he'll get in there all the same.

    • @adeelali8417
      @adeelali8417 5 лет назад +4

Yeah DC's desire for competition overrides all else along with his work ethic is why he's P4P #1.

I like Joe as a commentator. Hes biased sometimes, but so are most people. He does really well at breaking things down, and he can break it down to where even the casual fan could understand it. Not alot of people are that good at it. Hes also pretty good at explaining what a fighters game plan is, and he explains how he noticed it. Not to mention Joe has a good personality that more people like then dislike. Dont get me wrong alot of people dont like him, but way more people like him. The dude honestly has 4 million subscribers to his RUclips channel. He wouldnt have half of that if he wasnt such a good commentator that people also find funny and down to earth. And although ryan has a better understanding of jiu-jitsu, it doesn't mean he has a higher fight IQ. It also doesnt mean hed be a good commentator. He could easily be one of those guys who gets sucked into the fight and stays silent while he watches

Find other people to listen to that are smarter than you then suckem dry of knowledge 😂 kidding. Couture just grappled Demian Maia and won grappling at age 60 a new gen middleweight ufc who has respected jiu jitsu in that community.

In my opinion competition makes jiu jitsu players more like wrestlers, as well as their coaches which isn't a good thing. They become much more aggressive than the original Gracie Jiu Jitsu sport/self-defense system. So once bjj guys were taught to be patient, calm, have fun, be playful, but now coaches yell get pissed off if you're not taking rolling seriously. Also as the system of Jiu Jitsu was created to be a self-defense system it has drifted away from it's intended propose. People claim to honor Helio Gracie's memory with competitions but their not, they've Americanized the intended self-defense system into a sport, watered down with arrogant aggressive competitors. Now am I saying all BJJ schools and their students teach this way? Hell no. But a lot of them do these days. I'm fine with sport as long as a school teaches rolling with striking on the ground, punches in mind, hell there's been purple belts beaten by random bar thugs because they didn't know how to defend punches. A guy who's trained in the Gracie Jiu Jitsu system of self defense for one year using a punch block series has better chances of defending himself against a untrained thug than a purple belt of sport jiu jitsu.

+Jake Gage I believe you have a bias for the propaganda the Gracie Jiu Jitsu system has taught you. Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defense students dont win competitions so I understand you being so defensive. Good luck beating up people in bars and stuff, sounds very tough! ;)

Chad Keel I don't remember what I wrote but my perspective is not jiu jitsu all the way. I train now as a Kali / karate guy. I do jiu jitsu once a week at home with my brother using the Gracie DVDs.
I do believe that jiu jitsu is important or at least wrestling because you can definitely go to the ground eventually in a fight. But I don't believe that jiu jitsu is the ultimate all around fighting style. Every martial art style is good for what it was created for.
So between Kali knife fighting/boxing, karate, and some jiu jitsu and carrying a glock on me everyday, I'm not worried about a bar fight son.

coming from a dude who learns martial arts from DVD's. GOD help this soul! You are a serious danger to society, you think you know martial arts from DVD's and carry a fucking gun around. You need to go to the nearest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy and sign up and get grounded bro. Good luck with the gun and stuff man, you sound like a very tough dude. I would avoid you at all cost with your knife fighting skills! wow hardcore

Wow, I'm not about to argue with some random internet warrior troll. I've trained at a jiu jitsu school for two years, now I'm keeping up with a DVD big freaken whoop. You don't know me, you don't know my life or head. Learn to respect people or fuck off. I learn martial arts to protect my family and myself I carry a gun with me to protect those around me and my home not be to tough. But quite frankly I don't need to explain myself to a child.
