What, if making all the repairs and the customer can't afford the repair, what then??? Seeing the main processor would be quite expensive, would the repair continue? Guess that's up to the customer. I think I would have given a price to the customer based on the failure of both IC's and let them decide if they want to pay for the worst case scenario. That way you avoid the conflict caused from charging the customer for something that is not fixed. Enjoyed the video. I always learn a lot.I also learned that customers might be nicer in Germany than they are in NYC :)

Much like a rabbit hole, you don't know how deep it is until you dive in. Since you have gone this far and as long as the supply voltages to it look ok I would probably go with replacing it. Still no guarantee that's all that's wrong. Look on the bright side, your definitely getting some SMD soldering practice in on this one. :-)
Peter I am really enjoying these last few case studies on trouble shooting and repair. Here in the states one can pick up a working 706 MKiig for around $400.00 US (plus or minus $50) and even cheaper if you are willing to put up with some cosmetic issues, I got mine for $250.00. Would it be possible for you to share the cost of the components and your time that you have in this radio? My guess is that you are way past the break even point by now. Thanks again for sharing, you are one of the best out here, keep up the great work!!!
Hi Michael, this is no economical repair it is a case study here for my channel. I just wanted to demonstrate what all has to be considered and if at the end we have a working radio all are happy hopefully :^) Thanks for watching 73
Based on the voltage regulator being replaced, I would be looking only at all the parts that it supplied, that inductor being high resistance said to me it had been stressed so was almost certain the ic was damaged. I would say that anything that would be damaged by excessive voltage after that regulator will need replacing (and likely nothing else), so yes replace both those ics, I think the issue is localized.
Hi Peter, Good video showing your thoughts on how to proceed with the repairs. If it was my radio, I would go ahead and let you get replacements for both of those IC's. If there were more problems after they were replaced, I would cut my losses and give up unless a complete working used board could be found. I have my PC monitor just above my own DS1054Z. I am sitting here reading the data code from a garage door remote that was dropped in the sea. I just tried to read the screen on your oscilloscope instead of mine. :)
The scope trace for the collector of Q71 had no signal. Could if be caused by one of the other components in the output path being open or shorted? Thanks for the excellent videos.
Can you start listing the prices of repair parts like that big IC you ordered from the manufacturer so we can get an idea of how much repairs will cost for things like that? That model radio costs $700-$800 on eBay so probably worth fixing except they have the dreaded SMD electrolytic capacitors.
it would make more sense to have a new board installed along with those new bits on the board then spending days chasing faults, From a economical sense. considering the age of the radio in question

Nice job soldering yes it is an old radio but there are some that love it no matter the problems arise.

It is a rabbit hole as we can not really predict what's next :^) But we never can have enough practices on micro soldering right?

It would niche to know the approximate prices for the DDS chips to estimate whether such a repair is worthwhile.
Looks like your 100 leg IC has solder shorts on the pins.
