- Growing guide for the Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant).
The Aspidistra, is a beautiful houseplant and very tolerant of our homes. It can seem a little old-fashioned, but it still has many fans and there are new interesting varieties hitting the shops.
It will thrive in medium light levels but will also put up with underwatering, neglect and some low light areas in your home.
In this video, I share what I've learned and what works well for me over the last 20 years of owning these plants.
If you still want more, then the full care guide can be found on my blog, including visitor stories and photos of their legacy Aspidistra plants - www.ourhousepl...

Ive had mine 8yrs and i absolutely love it. Its gone from 3 leaves to 39 leaves. Only potted it on twice. Its so dense and ive never fed it once. I just let it dry out and then drown it. Must mention it needs it's leave dusting with a damp sponge regularly.
I love this. Thanks for sharing, Lesley! I agree about the dust, it's mad how much can accumulate in just a few months. I'm surprised to hear it's had that much growth with no feed! But that's why I love houseplants, always something new to learn from someone else's experience. Thanks for stopping by.
I rescued my sisters old root rotted cast iron plant, after repotting a year ago it's throwing out 3 new leaves and it get full sun in the morning then dappled in the afternoon and it's very happy
That's amazing! How do you do it, share your secrets! Mine can't stand full sun and over the years I've had so many comments and messages about Sun damage.
Been on my wish list for so long! Finally got one and apparently in Ontario, Canada they always get brown tips. We think it’s humidity issue, but IDK. Thank you!

I find that these plants tend to get spider mites. Do you find that as well?
I don't think in all the years I've owned these plants I've had spider mites! I don't get them generally, I've just assumed my humidity levels are too high for them. Do you treat yours or do they go by themselves eventually?
I looked you up because I got myself an aspidistra plant 🪴 that been spilt from the mother plant from a charity shop in weston super mare in the summer ☀️ 2023 it was starting to get yellow leaves its now December iv just cut the dead leaves off and I have 5 new just it in water not for long what I would like to know is what feed can I use to give a boost I know some plants like a bit of sugar like cut flowers would help this plant and not what would you suggest thank you .
I was in Weston the other week, they have a fab houseplant shop there. I'm a bit confused by your comment, as I'm reading as if you've put leaves into a vase of water? If that's correct, then it's possible they might propagate, but I think the success rate is low (it's never worked for me). If I've misunderstood and it's in a normal potting mix, then a normal houseplant feed would be my suggestion. But wait until Spring.
In either case, it's a thumbs down from me regarding a sugar feed. The sugar can provide a little boost to flowers because there are no leaves to create their own sugars, but this isn't true for houseplants as the leaves are still present. Also when you think about a vase of flowers, with the feed they give you the water becomes dirty and full of bacteria within a week. Fine for a bunch of flowers you're going to throw out, but not what you want for a houseplant that could be within you for years to come.
So if I just got a new one it's a plastic grower pot. How do I get it in a nicer pot if they don't like to be repotted?
You can totally repot them if needed. They just don't like it. Try to minimize root disturbance, so don't wash off or knock off the existing soil around the roots. When you put in the fresh mix, try not to be too rough or pack in the new potting mix too tightly. If you are harsh or accidentally do damage, some of the leaves may yellow up and go over, but don't panic too much. You didn't say which one you have, the all green variety is more fussy than the variegated version in my experience. Good luck! Hope it all goes well.
1:36 ......what is the gigantic plant by the Arcadia door?
It looks like a cast iron but they don’t get that big, do they.
At that exact time stamp, I'm showing a photo of my Aspidistra in the home I used to live in. If you mean the plant behind the photo which you can see for most of the video (right-hand side) then it's my very tall Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica).
@@ourhouseplants no, go one second farther. It’s in the picture within the picture.
It’s in a square planter that’s the same color as the wall maybe built into the wall?
@@debbiewhitman5455 Yup, that's my Aspidistra. They absolutely can get that big over time, and I guess my photo is the proof.
@@ourhouseplants Wow! That’s beautiful, thanks for responding to my question twice.
I have been trying to find one....will not stop looking now.
@@debbiewhitman5455 Even small ones around here are expensive, so I dread to think of the cost of a large one like that today! But good luck on your search and if you remember, drop by and let me know how you get on.

How do I figure out what size planter to use?
Just a size or two bigger than the current container is plenty, they're fairly happy to be quite snug. You just need a little extra space around the edges, so new leaves can come up.
Hello there! Do you know where you can get aspidistra milky way in the UK (online)?
This is the only variety that my heart desires, but I just don't see them in the garden centres!
The regular ones are just boring and super expensive, however I wouldn't mind paying the money for the speckled one!
Hi! They're pretty rare and have always been, mainly because of how slow they grow (unfortunately!) I believe I picked mine up from Dobbies garden centre, but I've not seen a singe one there in recent years. So for online shopping, you could try eBay (maybe Etsy). You could also try somewhere like @GrowTropicals as they dabble in rare plants like this. Reach out to them and let them know you're interested, and they may stock some. The final option is to maybe reach out to Emma at @GoodGrowing as she runs Plant Swaps and might be able to advise. Good luck! It's a plant worth owning, IMO
@@ourhouseplants Thank you! It's currently "sold out" on Grow Tropicals, but I'll keep looking...
Milley way will end up looking bleached or dead
Yes exactly, that's why you need to avoid direct sun for these plants.
Grow it outside in shade , you’re tiresome
Lots of my watchers / readers either don't have outdoor space or don't want to grow them outdoors.
Very rude
