Buddiepole have done well with this Shane, I'm sure it will sell well and not too expensive. I see is as somewhat similar to what I run - a quarter wave vertical with a raised vertical. I've been amazed what 1 raised tuned radial can do.
Shhhhh… it’s a well kept secret that 1 or 2 tuned radials work much better. Don’t know why it’s not recommended as much as it should. I use small coils of wire and use as much is necessary form the frequency required. I’ve even hung a ¼ wave wire vertical from a tree with 2 tuned radials 18 inches above the ground with amazing results when conditions have been poor. Most of have FUN 73 M0AZE
Glad I watched this! I was going to save a few bucks and skip on the tripod legs, since the hub has the 1/4-20. But those tripod legs look very well thought out design-wise and durable.
Thanks for the tuning tip and especially for the electric post tip for the raised radial!! Going to my local Lowes to get one. I was going to use a trekking pole but this is a better (and cheaper) solution.
Love my Buddistick Pro! I’m in Central Florida and have 30 countries in my log so far with this antenna! Perfect for a small yard in the city. 👍🏼 -KO4VTJ
Thanks for the video. I already ordered one of those antennas and waiting for it to arrive. I must admit your video is making me look forward to receiving it more. Ha ha. Good job.
I think you will like it. It is my go to antenna right now. I keep a Stick230 analyzer in my radio box. Makes tuning really quick, the stake from Lowes is perfect for the radial.
Very nice review/setup. I would assemble the antenna from the top-down, thus no reaching - whip, coil below whip, arm1 under coil, arm2 under arm1, then place it in the hub. I dunno - guess I need to buy one to check it out! 73 from Mike, KM5Z, Dallas.
Hello & congratulations for having the chance to work Alaska, it is rather rare these days. Thank you very much for sharing this video. You know what? I again learned Something new, about the coil, I love it, so I will do the same, on mine. Sure it would be faster to change bands. Here I'm waiting for the hub, legs, and their new coax, as I love the idea to have the choke balun right at the antenna. I almost have all the parts from Buddipole, and use it portable for around 20 years now. So this one (hub/legs,) I will in business, faster to install, and much less weight compared to the tripod/mast. Well you make my week, it is great so I wish you all the very best, keep on the very good work, love your video. 72/73 Michel VE2TH The QRO'er for 60 years this year.
Thanks for the video I like the improvements to the radial with the band markings. I gave my Buddistick away long time ago, it was too fiddley to get tuned especially on windy summits plus too heavy to back pack it anywhere. 350 summits with a link dipole. Regards vk5cz ..
Great job Shane. By far, the most detailed and complete review I've seen to date on this antenna. Well produced and well done. I loved your excitement at working Alaska! Were you running 100W? 73, George K2WO
another pro tip - keep the expensive legs dry, the adapters will swell if rain/moisture gets inside the legs........ near impossible to break the legs down when swollen. Chris indicated its expensive to resolve............ so buyer beware I guess.
i have a (probably first gen) buddistick (~2008). it does work. first contact was from boulder, colorado to the carolinas, checking into the maritime net on 20m. net control was working me off the backside of his beam. at the time i laid the radial on the ground. i was using my ft-817nd. i have the versa hub and shock-cord legs coming tomorrow. woohoo! at present i am using a couple of ~.25" diameter dowels for the standoffs pushed into the ground ~6", leaving 2' exposed and a notch sawed with a hacksaw (the blade was just the right width) across the top to hold the wire in place. the first one in line is a rest only for the middle of the run. is the electric fence pole plastic/fiberglass?. i haven't used it much due to the 'bases'. one is a table clamp with a camera mount top. it came with the kit. i bought the other later from buddipole. it is actually a tiny camera tripod that does NOT do well in even a slight breeze. excellent idea, marking the bands on the coil and the radial. set it and forget it. rodney KA0USE
Did you check the SWR when the radial was on the ground? I know it says that it’s best on the air, but sometimes you might not have the space to do it. Thx
My 1st time setting up yesterday, no matter what I did, I could not get the antenna resonate without an tuner and I use a rig expert antenna analyzer also.

It was pointing NE. Chris at Buddipole said there’s a small bump in gain in the direction of the radial. My contacts were pretty much omnidirectional so I’ll check it more when I go out and get more contacts in one sitting.
Hey Shane, what Freq is that Alaska net on? I'd like to see if I can reel them in at my QHT. I wonder if you tilt the main element over 90° to Horizontal, if it would work as a NVIS antenna?
I was very frustrated after getting the buddistick mini and all of its optional accessories, to find it isnt a functioning antenna by itself. You have to spend ANOTHER $100 to actual stand the thing up... why do they sell unfinished antennas without warning you that the other component is required?
@@K5QBF Thanks for the reply! I'm talking about the tripod that I've seen most videos use. I do have the $79 mast, but how would I stand that up? Is it enough to just use guy lines?
