SOLDERING TOOLS for jewelry making! How to set up a soldering station: ruclips.net/video/XZkr7RwTUwk/видео.html This is my newest video about soldering tools, make sure to check it out to find out about upgrades and my most recent recommendations! :)
Oh I’ve just found this super useful video! Thank you so much, I’m a single mother and the last person I asked to teach me in person told me I couldn’t come with my girl, so I started to look over the internet when I found the other video where I asked you about the blowtorch and now I noticed you even have videos teaching about bezels! Soooo cool and helpful thank you so so much!
Thank you so much for your informative videos for beginners. I have all the tools required, now I am just trying to set up a safe area to work in as I have very little space..
absolutely! In the beginning, only the most essential tools are actually required and there's not that many of them. I hope this video was helpful! If you're looking for more info, you can check out my newest video about the soldering tools and some small upgrades that I've made over time :) ruclips.net/video/XZkr7RwTUwk/видео.html
Hi guys! Here I am, with another video in the basic silversmithing tools series, this time - soldering tools and my torch. Hope you'll enjoy the video and make sure to leave any comments, questions and requests you might have!
Thank you. I'm slowly setting up a my studio at the moment. I'm having a break from abstract act for a while. I'm also getting into fusing glass.. then I'll concentrate on the silversmithing to incorporate with it.
Thank u. I needed this. I make silver jump rings for chain mail jewelry especially Persian and Byzantine styles. I just purchased a flux cone and dish..I also ordered the 3rd hand and I found. For don tool from my fathers jewelry making kit. I have. Torch as well,oh I also purchased a soldering fire rock not brick...do I need to anneal my 18 and 20 Gauge wires I’m using half hard round wire. I also have the tripod wire soldering kit. I also bought 3 tweezers plus I purchased a jump ring machine...sorry to bother u with my rambling....take care and 🙏🏻 thank u. Have a gr8 day..this really helped...
Nice intro.Just a quick note for others. The steel tweezers are cross lock tweezers which grip when you let go and let go when you squeeze - especially useful in the third hand base. They also have fibre pads on them which stop you burning yourself after they've been holding the piece in the flame for a while. You didn't mention your soldering block/tile.
Hi Jason, thanks so much for your comment, that's a good info! As for the soldering block, it's a regular cheap one from Cooksongold, it's called Asbestos Substitute Soldering Block and it's only £4.60 inc. VAT :) I have two and been working on them for ages
Where did you get your solder? Also, I’m making gold filled and sterling jewelry. Do I need a specific soldering paste/flux for that? I’m so confused :/
Stardust Mine Jewellery ahhh thank you! Such Beautiful work by the way. I subscribed immediately, hopefully we can start seeing some vlogs from you ! “Life of a jewelry maker” Love from, Hawai’i
Thank you for making this video!!! My question is where do you dump all your used liquids from pickling and etc? And is your office is the apartment you live in?
Hi Eleonora :) Thanks for your comment! I'm using small batches of pickling liquid, so don't usually have to throw it away. If I did, it's a safety pickle which is ok to be drained dissolved in water. I don't use any other toxic substances at the moment. But they usually come with own instructions how to get rid of them. Hope that helps! :)
Thank you for your helpfull videos! I'm trying to learn silversmithing by myself, but unfortunately the soldering is harder than I thought. I already watched many videos an read much about soldering, but my solder keeps forming little balls while flaming it (do you have an explanation?). Do you have any tips I could use, without following real courses? How did you learn it, what sources did you use? You can always send me something for more details. Thanks in advance!
Hi! what kind of solder should i use if i want to practice soldering copper? Thanks, Im about to start on my journey and currently making the list of thing to buy :)
I'm sorry, but I;m not sure about it, as I'm not working with copper myself. When I practiced on some little copper bits, I've used silver solder, but as you can imagine, it was visible. I hope you will be able to find some suggestions online, good luck! 🥰
Hiya, the brand most of the people I know use, is the most expensive you can afford. What? Cheaper cans of gas, the gas is not really that good, not very pure so the more expensive is often the best and hottest burning. Stay safe, Steve...
Glad you liked it! :) I don't use that system because the room I use is very well vintilated and I don't use toxic substances. But I will in the future :)
Good luck! :) Remember to compare the prices and reviews online before you buy something :) I'm using just these two blocks and a baking trey as a protection
Hiya, normally you buy your solder in strips, you can thin it down before cutting it into the pallions, the little chips, with tin snips. Stay safe, Steve...
A little fire extinguisher. Shouldn't need it because the amount of fire I work with is very small. I keep the soldering space safe and clear, no items that might catch the fire. I once dropped a freshly soldered metal on the bench - it did burn it a little bit but there wasn't a flame and no fire.
Hi Toby! Thank's for your comment. So these three solders are flowing at different temperature, higher for hard solder and lower for easy one. So basically, if you'd be soldering more than one joint, you would want to use different solder to prevent previously soldered joints from melting again. For example, you have three different joints to solder. You will start with hard solder and move through medium to easy for next joints. Does that make sense? Also, I've learned that you can use medium solder for general soldering and easy one for ares of less stress, for repairs and some final operations. Check here, Nancy explains it well: www.nancylthamilton.com/techniques/soldering/about-solder/ I have some issues with medium solder, for some reason it doesn't want to melt and flow as easy as hard solder does! Which is weird and doesn't make sense considering that it is suppose to melt in lover tempreature. It might be that my solder in particular is of poor quality... Anyway, been using hard solder for rings mostly and easy for bits and pieces where there's not much pressure or stress. Hope that helps! :)
Hi! I'm just curious where do you buy your silver solder from, there are quite a few suppliers and their solder formulas sometimes are different. Thanks for your lovely videos! X
Hi! Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I buy from Cooksongold, they are great, their service and product. Never had the need to try other suppliers. I use mostly hard solder and then easy solder. I wasn't quite happy with their medium solder but maybe I just didn't use it properly :P Hope that helps a bit :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Is it possible to use different silver solder since the one that you are using in the video doesn't ship to my country? I did found a 60% silver solder with diameter of 1.6 mm thought. Btw this is a great video and i will be watching more of your video. :)
i saw people solder with another thing that wasn t a flame it was like a thing that you plug and that gets hot . i don t know th name of it :( english is not my first language sorry 😫 what s the difference of soldering with a flame or with that thing?
in jewellery making it's most commont to use the solder for proper metal, like silver or gold, and work with the flame. The solder you talk about, is probably the one used for other non precious metals
Hiya, it would have been a soldering iron. You use them for soldering copper wire, not silver, that needs the heat of a flame to work. Stay safe, Steve...
Hiya, it is an unglazed porcelain dish. The slightly rough inner surface grinds off a little of the borax cone that you mix with water to make your flux. Stay safe, Steve...
