No big deal. My agency mandates the use of Microsoft Teams and supervisors are keeping track of employees better while teleworking than when in the office because there are excuses to use when working in the office (when Teams indicates you have been away for a long time) than can't be used when working at home. And number of hours worked depend on what agency. I'm in a STEM-related agency and before telework I probably worked OT 20 weeks in 10 years. Since telework, I have probably worked OT 120 hours in 4.5 years. Telework means no more water cooler talk, hallway talk, stopping by someone's cube/office talk, going to a local restaurant for 90 minute lunches, and leaving computers at the office at 5pm never to be near them again until the next day. This means people are producing more which means they are producing more deliverables for others to work more just to keep up. Going back to in office full time means I go back to working just 40 hours.

Did you notice the union official weighed 300 lbs? When I worked for the FAA in aircraft maintenance, we had to be there five days a week, and if a plane was broken, on the weekends working. The pilots could telecommute so they seldom showed up to fly because the supervisor didn't want to fly any longer (skeleton crew). Also, they would start engines, shut them down several minutes later, and write some BS up. By the time we could verify nothing was wrong, they would be gone home telecomuting. What a scam! The head office let them get away with it for years. Most of it should be contracted out. I would have worked for the contractor no problem. I did all the work being a junior hire anyway. Also, I loved working on aircraft. I didn't mind work. The others would tell me how to do my job but would never lift a finger to help. So let them cry! They did it to themselves in my opinion.

So you are happy with Private citizens shoveling out money on reckless spending that does next to nothing for this country and is highly inefficient and redundant, where we even have multiple departments performing the same job simultaneously or playing tennis passing government documents back and forth between all the red tape, for no other reason than to waste your money?
When was the last time you applied for any government regulated license, government documents, passport, etc... How long does it take for the government to do their job? Usually at least a month or longer isn't it? That is a serious problem that needs to be fixed, and all the tangled mess of government agencies doesn't help. Imagine now all the agencies you never even heard of, because they do not have public interaction and they are throwing away billions to trillions of your tax dollars every year on inefficiency. If the public interaction is extremely bad, you can only imagine how bad the hidden agencies are
The obvious solution is to transition government workers over to the private sector so they can have meaningful jobs that actually help society especially the U.S., not just spend money wastefully. I don't even know how you think you can justify the amount of wasted money we use in the U.S. on needless government jobs and red tape. Have you even lived in this country for any extended period of time at all? Have you had to deal with the government directly at all? They are criminally slow and highly wasteful, and everyone knows and sees it every single day.

So you disagree with ever changing literally anything? Literally anything at all, including things that are extremely stupid or bad for your company/country because that's the way we have always done it and if we change it, it will cause chaos?
No matter WHAT you do in any case to try and change and make things better, it is going to kick up dust and you are going to have things become unsettled for a time, but the goal is to find a better resolution that fixes the problem. You know who else has run their own business? Both Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, and they have done it so well they both now have billions in networth. Literally both of them are multi-billionaire entrepreneurs who have figured out how to run things efficiently and profitably.
You should understand as a business person, that if you have a leaky pipe or you are bleeding money somewhere in your organization, you need to stop the money bleed and plug the hole or you will swiftly go broke and go out of business because you can only take so many leaks before the whole boat is flooded. That principle doesn't just apply to the private sector, it applies to countries as well, and now we have this multrillion dollar debt hanging over our heads and SOMEONE has to have enough boldness to do something to fix it. We spend LITERALLY trillions of dollars more than we need on things WE DO NOT NEED at all as a country. Especially the federal government.
Stability only comes after you find a way to make the boat float, but if the boat is sinking and you want your sailors to stop bailing water and closing up holes just because you want a "sense" of calm, then you are fooling yourself. That is false stability. That false stability will only last until that boat has sunk and everyone is drowning.

I will not attempt to explain because it is something you would not understand. I want to get something out of my cont ed not get out of it - I am no longer able to do what I have for decades (attend the conferences put on by the power cooperative about safety, building failures and energy efficient equipment) as they tighten up what they see as acceptable - it has little to no value to me and takes a lot of time and money. It has become a profitable business. I tried to get a waiver to continue doing what I have done in the past as it is immediately applicable to my work. Denied. I transferred my license to another state - I have no control over their desire to control me. I gave up trying to build my affordable, innovative, energy efficient, highly disaster resistant buildings (including fire and earthquakes) in California. This will not change with the trump admin.
Look up the definition of conservative - that is how change should happen. It is the opposite of how change is being proposed now by repubs - not conservatives - not the same at all. It is simply bad practice. One of my sayings learned from decades of experience is don't change things until you know why it is done that way and how it is connected to earthing else. See the environment - many things are being undone that were done in haste that have caused incredible damage. I don't care what they do to make their billions (musk has malappropriated much of his IP) if it doesn't have to do with running a gov. I would not have a great plumber do my electrical -unless maybe they took a lot of time to understand it first ideally consulting with the person who installed it initially. Also, who is going to pay to relocate that person? Or are Elon/Vivek going to make that person pay out of pocket to relocate in order to keep his/her job? Elon/Vivek will need to delete entire agencies first before they can move remote people into those offices. It's not just an easy/plug and play solution.
However, I think Elon & Vivek have a completely different plan. I think they plan to fire all government employees and have their companies' employees work as subcontractors and make money as Elon is doing now with government with Space X subcontracts.

#1 Federal Employees saw a 12% increase in productivity due to telework - not LESS.
#2 Federal Workers receive transit benefits (the metro, buses, rail). The more they have to go in, the more taxpayers pay. It's probably up to $200 a month by now, if not more. I used to get $165 years ago.
#3 If you turned a good number of positions full time telework (the hybrid system is "meh" unless you platoon employees by sharing spaces), the Federal Government could consolidate and eliminate leases (which also means less need to pay security, electricity etc) etc. Which costs tax payers money.
#4 The Federal Government already has a problem finding professional workers, especially highly qualified ones (same issue with the military). Federal Workers already get paid less than civilian professionals doing the same job and most civilian professional jobs allow telework in professional fields.
This policy is 100% designed to get people to quit, not because it increases Federal Productivity and not because of really improving efficiency by coming up with smarter ways to do business - cut expenses. It's typical right-wing maliciousness, making other peoples lives harder for no good reason.

As long as an employees productivity is measureable, they will be more productive at home. No more "water cooler" discussions. There are fewer distractions at home. Speaking as a former federal employee, I am aware of the many unwanted distractions at work. Socializers may want to go to the office, but real workers can do more at home.

Fine with me. Since my office started working from home, I have had to work 45-50+ hours a week constantly. When we worked in the office full time, I rarely ever worked more than 40. When everyone is in the office, there is a lot of water cooler talk, hallway talk, stopping by someone's cube/office talk, going to a local restaurant for 90 minute lunches, and leaving computers at the office at 5pm never to be near them again until the next day. When teleworking, all of that goes away and people work more, which produces more deliverables for others to have to work more just to keep up. Since my office mandates Microsoft Teams, supervisors are keeping better track of workers when teleworking than they can when in office. Because productivity went up by teleworking, our leaders decided to cut cost and get rid of a lot of office space (including extra utilities and furniture costs). No sense in using taxpayers money for nothing. We have 1,300 people but now only space for 700. To go back to the office full time, we will need more taxpayer money (and probably go back to being less productive). If that's what people want, fine with me.

If you cannot figure out a new job option when all your bills are paid for you and you are getting guaranteed income for 730 days straight, I think the problem lies with you as the worker who is not putting in enough effort to get a regular job like the majority of American citizens. FDR's goal to push a huge increase in government jobs was extremely unethical, stupid, and has cost this country now trillions of dollars since he has enabled this era of reckless government spending and federal branch expansion. The federal government was NEVER meant to be this big according to the ideas and ideals of the founding fathers of the U.S., and fixing the disease of overspending and government waste is going to be somewhat painful naturally, but giving a nice 2 year FREE paycheck is absolutely insane. I actually don't even agree with my tax money being used for that, but you have no right to complain, even as a government worker if you are getting paid for literally doing nothing for years of your life while you can easily figure out another job with literally no stress.
