A statement about 12s: It is not consistent, but when it hits, it hits hard. So basically it is not very good with a few impressive exceptions now and then. But I don't agree and have another statement: If you are a hard hitter, it often hits hard. This means that a photographer or a good amateur will often get very fine results that will match or, especially with the main lens, will quite often be many times better than Samsung and iPhone. I think that if you are not good at taking photos other smartphone brands might be better at optimizing your images. But if you are a good amateur or photographer, 12s (and X80 Pro) makes a big difference, because they can see its potential and use it.
Hi, I have a doubt. So at 03:16, you mention if we take a 12 MP crop from Xiaomi's sensor, that would only be 1/4th. So does that mean the sensor can do lossless zooming upto 4 times? I have no idea about these things. Just wanted to know if large sensors in smartphones can replace the absence of 2x or 3x telephoto lenses.
Not exactly. You'd still have to contend with the lens and how much info the lens can resolve. I should have clarified I was ONLY talking about the sensor technology differences. That' said, on a binning sensor, zoom in the 2-3X range looks incredible on the Xiaomi. flic.kr/p/2nDsPkF
Great video on the photography perspective! However I'm left wondering what's your experience with video? Do they support top tier features like 4K 120fps? Slow motion from all of the sensors? Would you say they are clearly above than a OnePlus 10 Pro?
Watch this first: ruclips.net/video/1el-jpHN7PY/видео.html How we've traditionally measured sensors, the Xiaomi is technically a TINY bit larger than a one inch type sensor.
You man got my sub!!! From now on I'll watch your videos when it comes to camer reviews in smartphones... 👍 This is what a smartphone camera review should be! 😁
Bright night photos are not an issue IF they are sharp. The problem is when the night photo is unnaturally bright and also has bright grey noisy shadows and thick blurry edges on objects.
That's the progress we're seeing though. Would you expect sharp edges on a 7 second exposure from a standalone camera. Especially if there's ANY breeze? What about a five shot bracket? How sharp will those edges be when you stack those images in photoshop or affinity? That image of Soundwave took me three tries, with my camera on a tripod, to get a bracket that lined up perfect and had sharp details. The vivo produced a better finished jpeg handheld on the first try.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I would not and I understand that. But the other problem I have with modern processing is that if I have a tripod handy, I would like a normal manual long exposure, not stacking or other tricks of any kind. Just a longer exposure and I can't do that with modern phones, I can't turn it all off. On LG G4 for example, I can select 1s exposure and the light it captures will be nice and smooth, edges will be sharp. Because it's one continuous shot. I get that modern requirements are different though and what modern phones can do is marvelous. Both options would be best
Of course you can turn it off. How do you think I got the dark shots? If you have a tripod, just flip to the manual mode and shoot a longer exposure. Both phones support long exposures up to 30 seconds.
It doesn't on the LG. If you want a jpg, the camera is going to "process" the RAW file. ALL cameras make decisions on light and color and noise reduction when making a jpg. But if you want an image like the G4, the Xiaomi will have roughly a three stop advantage. Shooting at night, what you need a tripod for on the G4, to shoot a one second exposure, you can create a similar looking image on the Xiaomi in one third the time, and with better pixel level detail, and with better noise grain. So, when the phone finishes off a JPG, it's going to look a LOT different on the Xiaomi, because you're starting with a MUCH different (and better) base of info. That's not a problem with "processing", that the natural evolution of camera hardware improving our ability to resolve an image. I'm a HUGE fan of classic LG phones, and the G4 was a beast of a camera, but if that's your frame of reference, we've evolved RADICALLY since then. If you're already comfortable using a tripod, and you're worried about the (excellent) image processing on modern phone camera apps, you should really start editing the RAW files. You're already doing the hardware work to lug a tripod, the software work isn't that much to add, and you'd have more control over your final output.
Maybe because it's Chinese only? No idea. I don't rely on DXO at all because all they do is test full auto. It's a WOEFULLY incomplete look at what a camera can really do.
@@SomeGadgetGuy i just read the explanation if why this phone is not evaluated. first concerns the costs of DxOMark tests, considered too high, the second la trust in Leica.
awesome review! It was just announced that the 12S Ultra will not be sold outside China. This leaves me with the X80 Pro - but what holds me back are reports of overheating (and subsequent throttling) and bad battery life. Is that something you have experienced?
The X80 pro does have heating problems , but so do many Sd 8 gen plus 1 phones. With so much processing , it heats up sometimes. Cools fast too. Gaming etc is flawless , never heats up during it.
Amazing review! You helped me choose the... Non, lol, we don't get any of them in my country. Recently we got VIVO here but only the midd models, i guess they are checking the market so hopefully in the future we will see the flagships. i just landed on your channel through suggestions and now i feel like i have seen your videos or something like gsmarena reviews/videos 2 -3 years back but right now I'm not able to recall it, anyways i have subscribed, very informative review, perfect roasting too. 👍
*These comment would never fit on Twitter* I've used the p30 pro since 2019. This year I decided to change my phone for a newer one. I ended up with the x70 pro+ (these names are getting ridiculous) even though there was already the x80 pro. The wide angle camera on a gimbal make more sense to >my< use then a 2x zoom on a gimbal. And then xiaomi release this phone. I admit, the specs aficionado that lives inside my not rational me was so jealous. But then again, I look at these side by side, I look at the real differences between those two and, more importantly, I look at my real use of the cameras and I'm pretty sure I did the right choice. And I made it not because of pixel peeping, cold and abstract specs. I made it because of good and realistic comoarasions that take in consideration the real uses of these cameras. And the only place that I find those real tests and real debate about it is here. If now I have a vivo x70 pro plus (I lost my breath just saying these name) and I'm really happy with it, its because I chose it based on your reviews and analysis. Your channel, and all your bragging and rants, are one of the few places where I can find real information, real comparasions and real opinions from people who talk about photo, not hypes and out of context numbers that look great on paper. As a photographer for more then 15 years that just recently fell in love with photo on smartphones (not THAT recently, I just kept my 1020 and after that my p30 pro for too long), here is one of the few places that I sense that the RUclipsr are talking the same dialect as I do. And it's a great place to be and get some good ideas, informations and analysis. Thanks for doing a really good job and helping me to find out a really good camera to have in my pocket. You are awesome! **Gif from Meryl Streep stand ovation**
And I just realized that I talked this much and didn't say what I wanted from the start: great video! Awesome cameras. Can't wait for the second generation of this partnership between Leica and xiaomi. With better post processing and all they will learn from this first generation of really huge sensors. The future o cameras on smartphones never looked so interesting!! What a time to be a photographer! ❤️
Yo man, do you think that I can reasonably replace my Canon EOS R with the 12S Ultra? I am not a full camera professional but I do real estate images (or at least the ones that I show likely clients before it's done professionally for advertisement) and it would be a massive life enhancement to only need one device for calls, photos, and messages.
@@SomeGadgetGuy thanks man, I am due on a phone upgrade anyway, I'll try it out, it's just $300 more than what I normally pay for my phones, so it won't kill my budget and it may save my lazy ass a lot of effort, so it's worth a try.
Some of them don't. This Xiaomi I'm basically using as a smart camera / mini tablet. A lot of the international phones will have some support for t-mo LTE bands.
Interesting to see this comparison, but will personally steer clear from a Chinese device. The closest I've got to a Chinese device was HTC and in my books that's not China.
@Peace, Love and Unity I'm starting to think these are troll/bots cause they repeat same mantra all over the place with slight difference in wording. Just ignore
@Peace, Love and Unity Oh I'm not saying they're bad or don't do well. It's just my personal feelings. I've always preferred Sony but due to their limited availability I've had to get Samsungs. Until the XZ2 I had both a Sony and a Samsung. XZ2 is still running better than my S20. I'm sorry if you thought I'm taking a shot at the quality of Chinese devices. I'm just not going to support a communist economy and I've been very particular about where the stuff I buy comes from.
@@gizmohungry9739 I'm curious, what about this post made you consider it to be a bot? You do know a large portion of the world has been avoiding China and their products for decades, have you heard of the "buy local" initiatives started during the 1990s in many countries? It was started to encourage local employment of resources rather than the inevitable production being done in China.
Please be more clear that your concern for human rights and social compassion are important in deciding what tech to buy, Chinese business practices and commercial success are not a communistic approach, but hold a mirror to the business practices and norms of the West. Unfortunately. (Hoping you extend your boycott of Chinese produce to include Apple Computer’s hardware 😉).

I have an 4yo vivo and my current phone xiaomi. Both midrange. Between the 2 I like vivo more, it doesn't have the best color right off the bat, but it never fails to give the best details, compared to xiaomi, it provides great pics only when the lighting is good. Since I edit my pics before I post, I'd definitely find vivo better and xiaomi tricky to edit. Also i used to have a nokia n95 phone with 5 megapixel zeiss lens, and when checked those photos, they were as good as my latest pic😍 Anyway, what Im trying to say is I'd pick the one that retains more detail to have more control with the post editing. Unless you're the type to upload pics without editing, definitely go for xiaomi
my only problem with xiaomi is the 5x telephoto just kicks in at 5x .., any zoom below say 4x 3.5x is just a cropping.,, also the 2x telephoto on the vivo with the gimbal stabilization are so meant for night portrait shots .., while xiaomi will crop again.
That's how all phones work. But no phones have a sensor with pixels this large. You still need to deal with the optics, and how much info the lens can really resolve, but a 2-3x crop from this sensor is markedly better than most phones 3x telephoto. Theres just a little gap between 100mm and 120mm where you're really straining the pixel crop, but a 20mm difference isn't much of a problem if you can take a couple steps to reframe.
I'm so torn. It's my first time to purchase a flagship phone, and I can't decide between the two. My current phone is Redmi note 10 pro, I love the MUI. But the night pictures that you can take with Vivo X80 is just mind blowing! Both phones are excellent. Somebody help me

I think that if you are not good at taking photos other smartphone brands might be better at optimizing your images. But if you are a good amateur or photographer, 12s (and X80 Pro) makes a big difference, because they can see its potential and use it.
I learned a lot in this vid. Thanks for your comparison!
19:10 I haven't seen focus peaking on smartphone camera since LG. Glad to see Xiaomi take the chance to put it on the 12S Ultra.
Quite a few phones have limited options, it's just refreshing that Xiaomi supports it in practically all photo and video pro modes.
Great battle
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, this does look good.
Nice job, my man. Thanks! 🙂
P.S. Have you done any comparisons that involved the Nubia z60 Ultra, by any chance?
Best review I've seen about this two big sensor phones, thanks a lot
Great video on the photography perspective!
However I'm left wondering what's your experience with video? Do they support top tier features like 4K 120fps? Slow motion from all of the sensors? Would you say they are clearly above than a OnePlus 10 Pro?
No native support for 4K 120, which isn't too surprising given the sensor sizes. OP, Sony, and ZTE are the top recommendations for 4K slow motion.
I like your reviewing style very much! Keep doing a good work
How do you measure the "1 inch" sensor in the xiaomi? Is it really 1 inch diagonally?
Watch this first: ruclips.net/video/1el-jpHN7PY/видео.html
How we've traditionally measured sensors, the Xiaomi is technically a TINY bit larger than a one inch type sensor.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Great. Thank you!
You man got my sub!!! From now on I'll watch your videos when it comes to camer reviews in smartphones... 👍 This is what a smartphone camera review should be! 😁
Hello, do you think it is worth changing my pixel 6 pro for this live? What interests me most is the camera, greetings from Guatemala✌️
@@SomeGadgetGuy Oh really? Didn't know manual mode disabled all smart camera tricks like HDR and image stacking
Do you have any idea if why this 12S ULTRA Were not evaluated by DXOMark?
Maybe because it's Chinese only? No idea. I don't rely on DXO at all because all they do is test full auto. It's a WOEFULLY incomplete look at what a camera can really do.
@@SomeGadgetGuy i just read the explanation if why this phone is not evaluated. first concerns the costs of DxOMark tests, considered too high, the second la trust in Leica.
Even more of an indictment in how DXO testing is conducted then.
awesome review!
Can't wait for vivo x80 pro plus fight.
Incredible battle. Fun presentation. My God that nighttime vivo
It's insane what vivo is doing in software.
Thank you very much! Very good job, a lot of information.
great work brother
What photo mode do you use for Vivo ?
All of them? Depends on what I'm shooting.
Amazing review!
You helped me choose the...
Non, lol, we don't get any of them in my country.
Recently we got VIVO here but only the midd models, i guess they are checking the market so hopefully in the future we will see the flagships.
Basically we have only Samsung, IPhone and a lot midd laners of different brands and I don't want neither.
So, I'll wait, and wait, and wait...
Amazing job man, you clearly know what you are doing 👏
LOL I know that feel.
so what can you recomend us to buy then is it the vivo?
i just landed on your channel through suggestions and now i feel like i have seen your videos or something like gsmarena reviews/videos 2 -3 years back but right now I'm not able to recall it, anyways i have subscribed, very informative review, perfect roasting too. 👍
I've been on a bunch of sites. Probably Pocketnow?
Now I'm on Reviews.org and SlickDeals.
Best video so far about smartphone camera comparison on RUclips✌✌✌✌✌
*These comment would never fit on Twitter*
I've used the p30 pro since 2019.
One question from a smartphone photographer... which of the two you would use thinking in night photography and possible printing size?
Exquisitely awesome review. Keep up the good work. I've learned a lot from you 🙏🙏🙏
Exhalant Review 👌🏼
Yo man, do you think that I can reasonably replace my Canon EOS R with the 12S Ultra? I am not a full camera professional but I do real estate images (or at least the ones that I show likely clients before it's done professionally for advertisement) and it would be a massive life enhancement to only need one device for calls, photos, and messages.
Maybe? Im really not great at landscape or architectural photography. I would imagine if you normally shot wider it would work well?
@@SomeGadgetGuy thanks man, I am due on a phone upgrade anyway, I'll try it out, it's just $300 more than what I normally pay for my phones, so it won't kill my budget and it may save my lazy ass a lot of effort, so it's worth a try.
How are you getting these phones to work on North American carriers?
Some of them don't. This Xiaomi I'm basically using as a smart camera / mini tablet. A lot of the international phones will have some support for t-mo LTE bands.
That stacked RAW photo was amazing. You could see shadows of the grills inside the car. With some editing , it will look amazing
It's like shooting a bracket from a camera on a tripod, but you can go hand held. 🤯
@@SomeGadgetGuy no way. That was handheld???
@@gizmohungry9739 I'm not a bot.
You have to try the Motion Cam app on this high end devices Juan! :D
Gr8 work, thx 🙂
Noise is a heavy topic. Xiaomis Denoizing looks cleaner but looks less Detailed imho. A Denoising Switch/setting would be nice.
12sU vs. Pro-I would be great, or better RGGB vs RGB Bayer Pattern with similar Sensor Sizes.
Awesome, man!!!!!! Throw in a pickle 6 pro in there for s&g lol... Also, i have to agree with the higher focal length equivalent on phones, stepping back with my Pixel 6 pro and switching to the 4x is just *chef's kiss*
Camera competition with the Xiaomi and vivo is super exciting!!! Everyone about to up their game!! Lol
Super good video, Juan!
But seriously. How good is the pixel 6 pro telephoto for portraits. 😍
Have you done reviews on the Huawei P40 pro? I can't find it and I would be really interested in opinion because I recently bought one and the camera comparison to my S22 ultra really shocked me, especially considering the P40 pro is from 2020🤷♂️
Great review. proper order
For videos iPhone 13 or 12s or x80 which is better
Most say iPhone has best video is that true ??
True. But 12su is the best Android video device.
Best video iPhone. But photo no
anyone who has an interest in photography beyond simple point and shoot for the grams needs to check out this channel first
Great comparison of these (2) crazy camera phones 😁👍.
Juan thank you for restoring my confidance in American Phone reviews
Somehow your night samples for the xiaomi look way better than the ones from the vivo. Nice video, I reached way different conclusions from your samples, though
Nice was wondering about this
Aah, don't concentrate on those comments that much.. You did a good job!
Thank you for this amazing information, it is really helpful, regarding the fact that 12S Ultra is not so commonly available.
Juan i love your explainations. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
One of my best youtubers 👍
One question i want to by a phone
X80 pro
Xiaomi 12s ultra
Or wait After the next
iPhone 14 ?
If you're into photography first and foremost, I doubt Apple is going to bring much new to the table on the 14. SERIOUSLY doubt we'll see the sensor improvements which we just take for granted on premium android.
@@SomeGadgetGuy thank you. You are the best 👍👍👍😁

Why do you say " Mega_pickle" ???
This dude is on point....other reviews feel cookie cutter copy paste versions of each other.
Some real ones out here. They're just harder to find on YT.
I did not skip the ads put of respect for this guy
👍
Neither support 60fps selfie video recording do they?
I have an 4yo vivo and my current phone xiaomi. Both midrange. Between the 2 I like vivo more, it doesn't have the best color right off the bat, but it never fails to give the best details, compared to xiaomi, it provides great pics only when the lighting is good. Since I edit my pics before I post, I'd definitely find vivo better and xiaomi tricky to edit. Also i used to have a nokia n95 phone with 5 megapixel zeiss lens, and when checked those photos, they were as good as my latest pic😍
Anyway, what Im trying to say is I'd pick the one that retains more detail to have more control with the post editing.
Theres just a little gap between 100mm and 120mm where you're really straining the pixel crop, but a 20mm difference isn't much of a problem if you can take a couple steps to reframe.
you probably should get a tz200 if you want a pocket camera with large sensor and zoom
Waiting for the Vivo Series with the 1 inch sensor and that out of the world processing🔥❤️
Want so bad!
I'm so torn. It's my first time to purchase a flagship phone, and I can't decide between the two. My current phone is Redmi note 10 pro, I love the MUI. But the night pictures that you can take with Vivo X80 is just mind blowing! Both phones are excellent. Somebody help me
