I think the easiest way to remember what animal belongs to what number is key focus on the number of horns/ligaments it has. Two out of the 9 is more the shape of the animal in comparison to its respective number (4 and 7)
i loved figuring out this cipher on my own. it feels really rewarding now to look at these secret doors with confidence since i've already memorized about 3/4 of the cipher so I don't have to flip through my inventory to read the Arithmency notes as much

So each beast represents a number starting from the left side (0-9). The way you solve the puzzle is to add up the total of the given numbers and subtract that number from the number in the middle of the triangle. You should get a number that would represent one of the beasts. You then change the symbol on the wall to match whatever number you got after doing the subtraction.
I never got the number sheet, but I did all the doors still. Thats because I knew what a Demiguise (0) and a Runespoor (3) were; it pained me to hear you call the Demiguise a sloth. The Unicorn, Quintaped, and Acromantula were obvious references to the numbers 1, 5, and 8 as well. For reference, the order is Demiguise, Unicorn, Graphorn, Runespoor, Fwooper, Quintaped, Salamander, Giant Squid, Acromantula, and Hydra, and each has a recognizable connection to their number if you know a bit of lore.
Huh..That's very clever to hide some puzzles for secret doors on the floors just below the one they're on. Nice touch. It makes the puzzles more challenging without making the puzzle more complex. Like turning it to division, multiplication, or worse into a algebraic equation. It would make someone into a math/puzzle master...Or put them in a straight jacket thinking they've been banned to Azkaband.
I love how I found this video after solving some of these but only by guessing the symbols. I did a lot of running back and forth trying different combinations.
I was sorted into Ravenclaw for a reason, I actually had this figured out on my own, it honestly reminded me of a certain process I had seen before. With the numbers in a triangle having to be added together on each side to equal the number on the corresponding side. But I loved this puzzle, it was such an interesting and fun experience to be added into this amazing game.

I didn’t know I needed the clue. I was trying so hard to future it out. My sister had a doctorate in math and I sent it examples to her she gave me answers that didn’t work. Omg

(Or if you think it looks like an owl owls has 4 fingers on their legs.) 5: Quintaped is a 5 legged hairy beast. 6: Salamanders can survive 6 hours out of fire. (Or just imagine a six legged lizard.) (For one point to your house answer the question: how many hours can 4 salamanders survive out of fire?) 7: The Unknown represents seven... (I mean just imagine an octopus with 7 legs. I'm playing through the game trying to do everything including solving the puzzles first without looking them up. How I opened them wasn't the intended way, but it was still a brilliant solution. Since the ??s were typically farther away, I would choose the first, then go back and change each ? until the door opened, and repeat. I still consider myself a fitting Ravenclaw. I don't think I ever saw the diagram. I figured there would've been a quest like the butterfly paintings.
welp, I'm just plain stupid. despite this video I can't solve a puzzle door I found, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong but then again puzzles have always been my kryptonite. Oh well, thanks for posting the video man, you did a very good job. I'm just a moron who can't solve puzzles, especially if the puzzle is related to math. It's a miracle I even graduated school to be honest.
there is only the final main quest left and i don't want to complete the game just yet and decided to do this puzzle. this video is super helpful!! but they way he calls the magical beasts "hydra head" and fwooper "owl", i just can't LOL

Looking at the animal icons surrounding the door, they are the same on all doors, in same order, starting with 0 and going to 9 in order

The animals are laid out sequentially, figured it out on the first door I came across.
