34" on a chuck of bluegill in Michigan. Try fishing in the evenings, all my biggest dogs have been around sunset and after.
Bowling is in my bucket list..
I fish for them down in Arkansas on a low oxygen oxbow lake near the saline river that is full of grinnel. Spinner baits are the way to go for sure, I go to Walmart and get a bag full of dollar spinners and catch bowfin until I’m out. My biggest is 14 pounds, but bigger I know lurk in those waters… the biggest I’ve seen and felt for only a brief 20 seconds or so was about 4-5 foot long. I was fishing in a kayak alone when i hooked it and I was kind of relieved when it snapped off.
My biggest is a 10.3lb bowfin 💪🏽
Bowfin are one of my favorite fish
Nice
My friends and I caught one off of Delaware river and Piedra had a turquoise blue mouth game. Wardens said it was getting ready to meet. It was a female 24 1/4 inches.
For my college major, we are doing WI DNR fish surveys this summer and one of the groups that were electroshocking fish a few weeks back got a 30.5" bowfin, just about an inch away from the state record! Very cool to hear about!
What kind of research can I do to help in my videos
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
my pb is 9lbs and 29 inches caught on a texas rig
@@elit3_hunter666 that is a tank!
@@northwoodssportsmen7976 you got any social media i can share all my catches with you
Brian was hammerin em cause he has the old school reel.
Timothy Thompson You're darn right!
@@AnglingAnarchy I haz a reel of similar vintage. It (accidentally) caught my first muskie, my PB largemouth, and (accidentally) my PB muskie. It still casts as well as any modern reel I own.
I caught 27in 5.5lb on a size 5 mepps spinner
I’m from nc and I’ve had good bites on whopper ploppers
Such cool fish. Unbelievable fighters too.
i caught 3 bowfin earlier today, first cast and i caught one, best feeling in the world to catch something first cast and it’s even better when it’s a bowfin, such a cool fish
Bowfin love live minows just on a float or slip cork, especially if you’re near structure croppie fishing, I’ve caught a few massive ones, there was one I couldn’t even get in my kayak, it was at least 4 and a half ft, massive head of guess it was around 30 pounds, it’s hilarious using little octopus circle hooks and 6lb Tess on a croppie and fighting a giant bowfin and it’s just dragging you all over the place, I threw out a Carolina rig with a white perch near a super deep dredged canal by a lake and have hooked even bigger ones, once they get super super big they don’t even thrash or roll they just swim straight and break you off against their teeth or structure, wire or steel leaders are about the only thing you can do for big ones but they spook a little easy
What boat is safe to put in alligator infested water so that I can catch bowfin like this?
amzing
My biggest is 28.75" weighing about 9 lbs. I prefer to fish zman trd crawz on a nichols jt weedless magnum ned head in 3/16oz. I'm located in South Carolina.
My pb is 10.93 pounds 34 inches!!!! Its 2 pounds under wisco state record sadly
My favorite fresh water fish .
PB is 29"
I like Rapala wooden baits . Also do pretty good on Spooks and poppers.
A little dicey with the alligators trying to steal my catch .
Glad to see some people like them as much as I do .
Great video . Tight lines fellas
No weight ??

Will they hit a musky bait?????

Yo Lee what glasses are those?
They are cheap Amazon $14.99.
Good spot, but I'm telling you, you don't even know. You guys make trips to chase 'Skis it's time to come to the best place in the world for numbers and an EVERYDAY shot at a Swamp Musky over 10lbs. I caught a 35" just couple of months ago. My 9 year old daughters PB is 28" and she lost one over 30" that day. We catch them on hard baits in 5-15' of water because there are so many of them that they are fighting over food. I know you want to catch that state record, but it's time to take a real trophy trip. We get them 365 days a year. Hit me up when you're serious. 😁
“We just found the dog pound.” I love how much energy you guys bring every time! Keep up the good work.
Tons of muds this trip
This is how you destroy baits

Caught my first bowfin last week and I am totally hooked it was a 4 pounder caught on a four inch perch colored (yellow-green and orange) spoon. Going back there today!
Awesome man. I got so disgusted watching bass fishing vids and seeing people fuss over catching 5 and 6 pound bowfin. Be catching 1lb bass all day then" oh darn. Its just a 6lb bowfin." If its a FISHon my hook i'm stoked
Love the top water on a spinning rod. So dope. I love my fairy wands. My Pb bass was on one. Grew up with one. That said I dig casting reels as well. Fell off the spinning wagon until I got my tatula. Had trouble finding something smooth. Cheap casting reels are smooth. Takes a few dollars to get a good egg beater that I will accept.
its a total treat to hook into one of those, i love em
Bowfin are growing to be my fav... pb is 33.5 inches... have caught quite a few over 10lbs... next time you guys go to indiana muskie fishing, come up here to michigan... im like 20 minutes north of the Indiana line... I have a bowfin hole that will blow your guys minds... me and a buddy landed over 30 one day out there... a couple that day were 10plus... the record here is 14 even... the best luck ive had on lures would be sight fishing them with a skirted ned rig, or the #3 mepps comet minnow with the willow blade... I got 12 in one day on the mepps earlier this year, largest was only 26.5
What a monster.. nice bowfin !
Record here is 14 lbs 35inches
These fish look so cool. I need to get out and try bowfin huntin.
They are native to fl so check regulations..you CAN eat them tho
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
my biggest bowfin was just over 9lbs and i caught it on a rage craw sight fishing. Me and my buddy also wanna try and get the Michigan record for bowfin which is at 14lbs
I live in southwestern Michigan and have seen some huge ones some potential state records
I love dogfish they're my 2nd favorite fish I normally catch em on a weightless tube rigged weedless never caught one on topwater though it's so surprising they get so big when my pb is only 24 inches 5lbs
What's your PB right now
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
never thought about going after them with a tube, gonna give that a go this year!
Where I'm from it's illegal to release one of those dogfish. They are extremely detrimental to nearly all fish spawns. The state record in MN is caught annually and released to the shore or garden compost.
You understand theyre native, right? Theyve coexisted with the same fish you claim they’re detrimental to for millions of years.
@@harleysmith3895 I do understand that, and humans are detrimental to the same fish the DNR says they are detrimental to, and humans don't harvest bowfin. In the late 90s as a kid we got $5 each from a CO for spearing them out of a paddle boat.
@@harleysmith3895 Also they have been stocked illegaly in several places
@@rumnboats7612 you may be thinking of snake heads
I first caught them in the backwaters of the chickahominy river in Virginia. While fishing for blue cats. I love em . fight hard, jump and are mean and cool as hell. Live in N.Y now and can get them in shallow bays of lake Ontario. Biggest probably went around 14 or so.
The big Mississippi up north, wi or mn holds sate records no doubt. When I found out how small the mn record I kicked my self as I’ve caught several in the mid 30s. Looking to break it this summer. Awesome video guys!
Hope you don’t beat me to it. I’m also on the hunt. Tight lines and good luck to you sir
Surprisingly I’ve been catching a lot of dogs on spinnerbaits while pike fishing this year. Biggest is 28 inches!
Lbs?

When is lee going to have the water choppers in stock again ?
I have 5 different colors currently up, the most I've had all year. Thanks
Awesome thanks lee !
Sorry I meant the mini water choppers lee
I love targeting them! Sightfishing is the best. Biggest so far is 8 lbs
My pb dogfish is 28 inches i’ve had good luck with the Booyah pad crusher Junior or just live bait on a plane hook works good to Awesome video keep up the great work 👍👍
I got a weight here
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
Same 28" pad crasher junior Massachusetts. Favorite fish by far.
Live in colorado. Dont know if we have them. Keep crushing em!!!
marshes on the south shore of lake Erie i like to sight fish with a fat night crawler. they have a hard time letting a wiggling crawler go , works great when they are not as turned on. 28" is my largest . seen some monsters bull frog hunting at night .
I live near Toledo and go to Erie but never caught a dogfish. I will have to try the crawler
when are you guys at chaos tackle going to make a good lasting frog or other rubber dogfish bait? I think Lee and Rob have the talent to come up with a new bait for the predators like the dogfish.. Or at least a new and improved bait.. If nothing else a new tuffer better actioned froggy lure.. What do you think??
Maybe a larger bullfrog bait? Never seen a large bullfrog bait thinking of it.. That might just be the ticket.
Maybe a combo of hard and soft.. You know rubber legs on a hard body maybe.. Just shooting some ideas your way.. Dogfishing baits is an untapped market, sky is the limit.
There's got to be a way to get the large dogfish, and record dogfish to attack.. What are they naturally eating? Might have to figure that out first. Frogs is all I can think of. So the larger bullfrog seems the natural choice. Unless you actually keep a couple to cut open to see what they are eating.. And if there is something else they are eating?
Large bullfrog popper that is tuff enough for the job.
Must get the biggest of them to attack.
Should come fish lake O and chase a record bowfin... we got lots of em and our water grow em Big.
A buddy of mine has a big peice of land w 2 landlocked ponds on it.
Both mainly largemouth bass.
Pond 1 is Loaded as far as numbers. You will catch 60 fish in an hour but theyre all cookie cutter 1lbers. Pond 1 has no panfish and despite its decent size its max depth is 9 or 10ft and avg depth is 3.5ft-5ft.
Pond 2 is your textbook ideal "O" shape with an island in the middle.
Deeper, some 15-18ft water and alot of big bluegil as well as sunfish for food.
I'm trying to convince him to stock pond 1 w bowfin....
Did you say cottage grove? I live five minutes away. If you mean CG Minnesota.
We call them Grinnell's around here, and they're generally considered a trash fish. They do hit hard, and fiight like the devil. Spinnerbaits and plastic worms are what I seem to catch most of mine on. They'll sure get your heart going for a few minutes during a bass tournament.
I had never caught a bowfin before and then just this week I caught a 14 inch male bowfin and a 23 inch female bowfin within 3 days of eachother while bass fishing with a whacky rig senko.. pretty fun fights
SWIMJIGS kill em!
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
I was bass fishing in minnesota a few weeks ago and I lost a fish that I legit think was state record potential
I lost an even bigger one..where there's one there's 2 where there's 2 there's a few
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
Have you guys ever just used live bait for those doggies?
I’ve used cutbait and prefer it over livebait
Bait sucks!
gotta be the olny chaps in the states actually fishing for them, records got to bite eventually!
Are you kidding? Bowfin , dogfish choupique… such an amazing fish they are getting more and more popular . Here in Canada they are getting increasingly popular to target and it’s exponentially bigger in the us
You should try a whopper plopper
Wonder if those would like a mini top raider? I think when they're all bright colored like that it's called full plumage like when male birds get really bright colors for mating season.
WOW Nice fishing vid! Subbed!
Do you fish for these hogs
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
I’ve never fished for bowfin before but just out of curiosity why are top waters being used the most?
They have a lateral line in them, making them super sensitive to vibrations in the water.
Swamp donkey! I love it!
These fish were largely introduced illegaly and are an invasive species which feed on eggs during various spawns. Most records have been broken regularly and tossed on shore. Don't release these if you want to see panfish or sportfish in the body of water you're fishing. Also don't release these if you want a big one as they over eat and competition not only dwindles the other fish population but limits their size. Also they can only survive out water for an hour or 2.
This post is completely wrong and dangerous. Bowfin have been in north America for 100 million years. Maybe you're thinking of snakeheads.
@@twotoekenn Yes in North America, they're pre historic however not in many lakes where they exist now. The laws preventing their return to the water exist for a reason.
Hmm it put up a heck of a fight=lasted 10sec. sometimes i wonder what kind of fishing experience some people have, or dont have... but it's fishing so i am still watching....
Full fight here check the time to next em up
ruclips.net/video/aJnR8qEcYbs/видео.html
Still loving the dog videos.
They are jurassic fish. They were plentiful way back. Then the population was depleted almost to the extent they were not common in WI. Many bodies of water didnt have them for a long time. They were transplanted illegally in the 80's and 90's into waters with high population of carp. They did very little to the carp population and almost destroyed the pan fish population instead. The DNR suggested during the late 90s, as a invasive species. If caught, dont release. They thrive in stagnant waters. If your catching them, the water quality is less then desirable. Fun to catch, but not a good sign of the conditions of the water. The winnebago system had had a continuous increase of thier population from green bay all the way down to winnaconi. And have migrated further north on the wisconsin river. In combination of bad water management, and these fish. Many streches of the central wi waters are decimated. Catch as many as you can,and have a big fish fry.
U guys should Collab with Joe cermele from meateater. He loves bowfin as well!
