I presume people have been complaining about the lads driving the tractor. As i see it you are teaching them valuable lesson and work ethics. In my eyes thats the sign of a great dad. Keep it up they a credit to you and your farm

Boy oh boy, does that bring back memories for me. Thanks
We never nad the multi grabs like that. We just discharged right onto the wagon. It’s interesting to see all the different methods to speed things up.
When we unloaded, there were roads on the wagon when we loaded into two sections. Then there was a pulley and hoist system that lifted half the load at a time up into the loft.

I've had a hand in a few different styles. Mostly small squares, with a thrower and basket wagons. One guy used a wire tie baler, dropped them in the field, and came back with a NH stacker, and dropped them in a heap by the conveyor. (he packed those bales TIGHT, as they were for sale. Heavy things to move!) A third guy made big squares. That was all mechanized, but a bit of a chore to feed in the barn.
The least favorite was riding the wagon and stacking. THEN you had to restack in the barn...
They all have advantages. I probably liked the thrower and basket wagon method best. We'd fill them all up in the afternoon, and leave them in the barnyard until morning- when it was cooler! You only handle the bales once- when you pull them off and stack them. You could also pull a wagon out into the pasture, and kick bales off into feed bunks; or just back one into the barn, and pull bales off as needed. Little waste or spoilage, as they're all off the ground and under cover.
Perfect for tie stall dairies, and bank barns. Not so great for TMR style feeding or large free stall barns.

Great to see the boys working on the farm. The baler knotters are very clever but when they mess up!!! you notice baling twine across the field where the knives on one side hasn't cut the twine. So it's stop and pick up the messed bales and re thread the bailer which in these weather conditions you don't want any delay. I've noticed some makes of twine cut better than others but I replaced the knives just to be sure! Good work Richard and crew for a crop safely in 😀

Hi Richard, well done getting your hay done it looks like it’s pretty nice stuff I think that hay will be at a premium this year I haven’t seen any done in our part of Devon.it’s great to see your boys getting involved other than the hard work it was a nice job to get involved with everyone coming together to help brings back memories of when I was a lad getting the harvest in the worst bit was stacking them in the shed when you got up in the roof hot dusty no air and a sore head from banging it on the purlins happy days 👍

Isn't THAT the truth. You come down, after, looking like the Jolly Green Giant from all the hay dust- lumps on your head, a few litres lighter, and wanting nothing but a breeze and a good long drink! But what a great feeling seeing it all stacked and tucked away for the year!

Amusing about CGI Harry, I wouldn't worry I first started driving tractors at a young age, first time on a cabless Nuffield 10/60( if it was cold I wore my grandfathers old WW1 Army Greatcoat ) & I couldn't reach the pedals, which made stopping somewhat interesting to say the least ! In my opinion, New Holland always made a good baler, but baling hay and baling straw are two different animals, hay bales never seem as neat. Your right about Devon and it's hills, but for a Farmer's boy from East Yorkshire now living in Mid Devon I love it, so much more character than the flat Holderness Plain !

Hi, I was actually driving a tractor on the road aged 13 back in 1970 lol loaded with hay bales on the trailer. no trailer brakes either. Baled hay with a similar baler too back then, plus I mowed the fields. I'll tell you something else, loading a trailer with bales like these on your own by hand is no joke..... DID the boys have sore fingers after all the bale handling ???

I had the same problem possibly with late cut hay . Good looking bales but soft to walk on, on the stack. Easier to move headland flat 8's out with a grab than by hand. You are lucky to have 2 lads, willing to lend a hand. Not many people these days want to know small bales at all, or want too much money to help out.
