Born into extreme poverty, illiterate until the age of 10, forced to quit school at the age of 12 to work as a shoe shiner, losing a finger at his factory job at 19, and then becoming a labor activist, union leader, and founder of a political party devoted to a defense of laborers (the Workers' Party, or PT), Lula has always been, in all respects, the exact opposite of the rich, dynastic, oligarch-loyal, aristocratic prototype that has traditionally wielded power in Brazil.
That's precisely what makes Lula's rise to power, and his incomparable success once he obtained it, so extraordinary. And that's what, to this very day, makes him so worth listening to regarding the world's most complex and pressing political questions: As the ascension of right-wing nationalism and populism at times seems unstoppable, Lula is one of the world's very few political figures of the last several decades able to figure out how to win national elections in a large country based on left-wing populism in the best sense of that term.

And Venezuela, a neighbor, is on the fringes due to plenty of economic pressures from US policies. It's not hard to see that if the USA is exerting pressure in Venezuela, they will do so with Brazil. So Lula does not like that USA is "at the shores of brazilian territory." Its smarter to address the issue now.

Awesome interview! This is representative of the great political turmoil that we are witnessing Worldwide today. Thank you, Glenn for doing such a great job of keeping the conversation focused on the issues affecting Brazil today, and the years prior that led to the current political regime come to power. It is most definitely a worldwide class struggle which, so adversely affects to poor, making it impossible for Governments to lift them out of poverty and bring income and social equality to them all.

At the 16 minute mark, the point is made that Brasil was prospering under Lulu and the wealthy did just fine. The problem was that the poor had risen a rung on the societal ladder and were now traveling by airplane for the first time ever, entering university and changing the dynamic from the haves and have nots to a more egalitarian society. Brazilian elites evidently felt soiled by this and decided they would rather have crushing poverty on one side and comfortable wealth on the other. Brazilian slavery is a subject I don't hear enough about and the idea that Brazil is a racially homogenous society is a myth. Lines are drawn racially, economically, and in any other way, you can slice it. It's very sad and Lulu is the Mandela of Brazil.

Great interview. Great interviewer and great interviewee. I've been a hardcore critic of president Lula my entire life, but every single day my admiration for him only grows. I'll probably disagree with him on many subjects until the day I die, and I'll be forever extremely upset about some of the things he's done... but the guy has a clear mind and is amazingly intelligent, perceptive and most importantly, his sympathy for the less-privileged is unequivocally genuine. It's refreshing to find out that I can still learn new and important things which can be useful on my day-to-day life, such as how to deal with a reality where my country is governed by this circus of lunatics picked by Bolsonaro. Who would have thought that Lula is the one with the best advice on how to learn to love again, and how to re-approach these monsters from whom all I want right now is the maximum amount of distance I can get? Wise old man, that's what Lula is today - and the good kind of "wise", more often than not. I would say Lula is about to become the next Mujica, but it's clear that Lula gives more shits about global suffering than old Pepe. Lula cares even more than Bernie, if we're to compare charming old progressives. @@rajanaldo Hell yea I would. Nobody in the world right now is progressive enough for me (and for most other progressives, I reckon), but your assessment is on point. I'd say Lula is a brilliant politician in practice, and the perfect progressive in theory. He slowly helped the poor, most often when the general political mood allowed him to do so, but what he did wasn't exactly the progressive revolution so many of us would have wanted or expected. That's exactly why I never voted for him, since I never felt like he would be able to deliver on his lofty promises. I was kinda right, but now I'm starting to feel like he - or the idea that he represents- is the only one who can deliver on that promise, maybe, some day. Even if he can't, sadly it still feels like he's the best we've got. The alternative is a sham, a circus, and a despicable show of horrors.

As an American who lived in Brazil for 2.5 years and speaks fairly fluent Portuguese, I wonder if Glen is correct in addressing President Lula as "você" instead of "o senhor". It is one of those cultural customs I still am unsure of myself. But I suspect that in this case the former president should be addressed as "o senhor". Is that right?
It depends on the person, I guess. Since they respect each other, they threat each other more informally. Also, I might have many disagreements with Lula, but one can't say that been pompous or ceremonious is not one of his flaws. He is not the kind of guy that would be offended for not been called senhor all the time. One of the qualities that made him popular was the image of being an average Joe. So people tend to treat him more informally, I guess.

As you probably know, a U.S. president can be addressed as "president" for the rest of his/her life. Glenn has made clear that he doesn't like this custom. This may explain why he addresses Lula informally.

This is the first time I've heard Lula speak at length, and I can see why he was so loved by the people of Brazil. Although he had little formal education and didn't learn to read until he was 10, he's very articulate and sounds like he reads and thinks a lot. Compared with Trump, a babbaloon who doesn't read books at all, Lula sounds perfectly coherent, and intelligent. At least reading will give him something to do while incarcerated. I hope Bolsonaro's reign is short or that he pardons Lula. I guess the latter is unlikely, given that he fears his popularity.
Lula was born in one of the most miserable regions in Brazil, he dealt with extreme poverty and hunger when he was growing up and had to start working really young to survive. While president, there was a huge controversy to whether he was alphabetized or not. Funny enough, he was the president who most invested in education and opened the most universities in Brazil, while fighting extreme poverty and hunger of the Brazilian population. Lula truly is an iconic character.
Bolsonaro could never pardon Lula because he himself states that he was benefited by Lula being taken off the presidential race (Bolsonaro was struggling for 20%, while Lula was dominating with 40% in pre-campaign). Sergio Moro, the one responsible for taking him off the race, was awarded by Bolsonaro the Ministry of Justice (and probably will also get a Supreme Court nomination) for such actions. It sounds like a conspiracy, but these are really just the facts in everyday news in Brazil.
I love the reporting done by Glenn Greenwald. Intelligent and articulate, but most of all brave to take on these kinds of reporting assignments.
