About this Two - Fer visit:
Joseph L Block anchored off the mouth of the Iron River in WI Apr 2, 2023 20:30 - 16:10 waiting for Two Harbors to load iron ore pellets. The weather began to turn ugly, knowing they would not be at the Two Harbors dock before the storm, picked up anchor and headed to Duluth to take shelter in the Harbor from the storm. They arrived Duluth Entry Apr 03, 2023 @ 18:01 for CN dock to wait on weather, sharing the dock with the CLS Assiniboine. They departed the Duluth Entry Apr 05, 2023 @ 20:34 from CN heading for anchor outside Duluth to wait to load at Two Harbors CN.
Following closely behind the Block was the Joyce L VanEnkevort, they arrived at the Duluth Entry Apr 03, 2023 @ 18:10 for Fraser Shipyards, getting some service and waiting out the storm.
They arrived at the Fraser dock @ 16:10. They departed Duluth Entry Apr 7, 08:17 AM from Fraser Shipyards heading to the lake to wait for the Cort to depart the BNSF Dock
I love that the kids…and adults are always excited when the ships come in.
And for some of us, it never leaves! 😁
I love Duluth Canal😊
Always something incredible about having a skyscraper move by you
Me too and then the kids motioning for the horn. When they honk everyone gets knocked back a bit…
Despite what some people think, Lake Superior can whip up a pretty nasty storm. I was in a storm on an oil tanker the Arthur Simard 46 years ago. The Arthur Simard was about 550 feet long. I loved watching her climb the middle of the 3 sisters wave, then dive into the 3rd wave. The bow would break the wave and 2 walls of water would crash down onto the deck and it was completely under water. We had spent the winter months running from Montreal to the east coast of Canada. Superior can be just as rough as the North Atlantic on the east coast of Canada.
I've heard that many times, thankfully never had to experience it!
laik... there's songs about it, peeps :)
@@bmolitor615 you mean Gordon Lightfood's "Wreck of the Ed. fitz"?
@@HrLBolle sure do :)
@@bmolitor615 good song
also the man did good for his account with the "Higher Ups" by giving the revenue to support those left behind
Love to hear the cooperation and team work involved with all the different parties involved...👍
indeed, it was neat listening to them chat, work with each other.
Thanks Paul for this Friday night double feature...🍿
LOL, you're welcome Steve.
Huge shoutout to the parents, grandparents or whoever brought the children down to experience this absolutely amazing watching the experience and the excitement
Indeed!
I'm glad they took shelter! Those who ignore warnings take their lives and the lives of their crew in their hands. God bless those who put out to sea! I keep you all in my prayers. I wish you calm seas and good fortune 🌹⚓
Exceptional piece. Love the radio traffic and the kids and adults all bundled up for the big doubleheader. Really enjoyed this one.
Loved getting to see these two coming in, and especially enjoyed hearing the radio chatter as they sorted everything out ahead of time. Have to admit I did snicker a bit when you sped up the video: they really were racing to get off the lake! 😂. Thank you for another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Lots of action today. Interesting that it shows that the captains know and respect the power of the lake and the storms that come through. Thanks Paul.
Love 2-fers! It's still winter in Duluth! I bet you're ready for sunshine and warmer temperatures. 😊Great video, thank you. Happy Easter to all! 🪻🌺🌿😇
Yes! Thank you! Happy Easter, rumor has it next week we may touch the 60's!
I find this to be as interesting as watching a Space Shuttle launch. Any of hundreds of things could go wrong at any instant. It pleases me that the people are there to see 'their' ships come and go, and the ships respond with a blast. (Don't know how anyone gets any sleep at night.) Hats off to Duluth and the shipping industry. God bless America.
Headed there in about 3 weeks to see the Ships for ourselves coming out of south Louisiana
People don't even realize it but it's our waterways that make the US so great and mighty
So very true!
Your country is burning, its far from great or mighty
Waterways and an abundance of natural harbors on both the Atlantic and Pacific. Back in the day the importance of the Erie Canal system to the rapid economic development of the colonies was taught in history class.
Great video. I like the horns a lot. It’s still amazing to me how long these ships are. Tfs.
Thanks!
Nice a twofer :) looks like the kids enjoyed them both. THanks Paul
You bet, I did as well 🤣
Joyce has the loveliest voice...all rich and smoky. the barge might do the hauling but the tug has the voice and the soul.
Excellent video and radio transmissions between all the ships and bridge. Happy Easter to everyone!
Thanks, you too!
Memories were made here, thank you, Paul!
Thanks!
Would love to see those live and up close. We get some oil tankers off of the beaches of Los Angeles, but nothing like those ships. Thanks so much for the video.
Just ran into some tourists from the West Coast this evening, they came out our way, one of their bucket list items was seeing some ships!
Aww. Sounds like a little bit of chatter between a kid and a crew member on the first ship
Something about it... seeing that they made it safely to port to weather the storm...
Thanks for updates. Love the audio! Jeff Robin and Ginny
Thanks for listening
Thanks for the video 👍
My pleasure!!
Happy Easter
Thanks! Happy Easter to you as well! 🐇
I'm from Japan I love this video.
Thank you.
I have been their five or six times over twenty years. Always took a scanner got to hear the same. Big fan of yours. And yes one more plug for Grandma's. If you go their please try it.
I do frequent Grandma's 😁 Thanks Jeff.
Thanks Paul for another great video ⛵️⛵️😊
Glad you enjoyed it
I see myself yet again!!! Great video Paul!
Yes! Thank you!
Hi, from New Zealand. Question, why do these ships have blunt bows unlike most ships. Here in New Zealand it is still very hot and at present still in autumn. Is it snow melt yet in Canada? Thank you for sharing.
Great question! It's all about hauling capacity. With the round bow they can carry more cargo. It's less efficient for fuel, since these are lakers, meaning they are designed for the Great Lakes, the fuel efficiency is surpassed by the profit on the extra cargo capacity
Hi Paul. Another great video! Thank you.Question for you,? Have you heard any information on the American Spirit? Are they still working on her diesel engine? When do they hope to get her back in service? She is a great boat! I hope she comes back soon.
The last I heard is they are still working on the engine. Have not heard any updates in a couple of weeks though.
Thank you Paul!
I’m planning on making the long trek to Duluth from NC sometime this summer! Can you recommend any sources of info on the “must see” places related to Great Lakes ships in that area? This place has been on my bucket list for a long time! I’m retired after 41 years on the railroad, and recently lost my bride after a long illness, so here we go! There’s zero chance you’ll see me there with that white stuff on the walkway though! Ha!
Im sorry about your wife
Have a good trip
Hey Tom, sorry to hear about your wife. Split Rock is a great place to visit. The Lake Superior Maritime Museum has a lot of great items inside, the Irvin has a great tour that you can take on board, Two Harbors, you can see ore boats getting loaded very clearly. The LSRM would be of interest for you, being you were a railroader. I hope I have helped some. Have a great trip. it's awesome up here.
I hope that there were at least some crew members who waved back to the kids. It would have made their day.
Whoo hoo Joyce
Right neighborly of them!
indeed!
I enjoyed this upload so much that I just subscribed. Thank you for sharing with us.
Thanks for the sub!
Me too!
Nice teamwork!
Indeed!
*SALUTE!* 🌹⚓
Great footage, can not imagine the tugboat barge going through waves
Sure enjoyed the twefer! Thanks Paul
Glad you enjoyed it
damn I miss duluth
Sorry to hear that. Come back to visit!
A very good Video
Thank you very much!
Great video, Paul! The JOE BLOCK looks pretty good. Any rumblings on the RYERSON? 3 L, 2 S from Green Bay.
I still see workers on her M-F, not a lot of activity, but activity none the less.
@@PaulScinocca Thanks, Paul. There's a group of us here in Green Bay and Manitowoc that are hoping she sails again. If that doesn't work out, and she goes to scrap, we would like to rescue her pilot house and place it facing Lake Michigan as a tribute to her being the last laker built in Manitowoc. If you get any info to her fate, please let me know. I can send you my email if you'd like. Jim Nelson.
Thank you .
You are welcome!
nice nice
Thanks
i sailed on the ss Meldrum bay for a number of years when i was a younger man and you did not want to be in the middle of lake superior in a bad storm it was Scary especially if loaded with iron ore.
She was a great looking vessel, straight decker as well!
Is there a railing along the channel
So is the Joyce a tug boat that pushes a barge?
Correct, they call it an A.T.B, articulated tug barge. Pretty much mated for life, easily separated and reconnected.
@@PaulScinocca Cool, thanks
Wait, the Joyce L. VanEnkevort has a horn?
🤣, good one !
Angry water is not something to mess with.
True statement!
Thx. Can't get the Like button to work for some reason. Hmm. Reloaded and now it's working.
😁Thanks Bob!
The Paty here in Madrid
What was the long-short-short-long salute the Block gave, and why did the Bridge return it with a long-short-short Captain's salute?
I call it a "fleet salute". Done for the fans on the Piers.
I would not like to be in the bow observation box on th 'Great Lakes Trader ' ( 2nd ship) in a storm
How bad was the storm?
60mph winds, lots of ice got tossed up on the piers, rain and snow.
This weather is getting old I live in northern Michigan it's snowing like crazy I was hoping to get the Corvette out of hibernation this weekend but it doesn't look like it
I agree, getting old....it does sound like next week we tip the 60's....
Whats with the Blocks salute? 1 long 2 short 1 long?
I call that their "fleet" salute
The Block getting to pass the Great Lakes Trader lol 😂
Indeed, never thought of the Joyce as a speed demon!
The winds of November come stealing
LOL, those November winds are 5 months late..
Or 7 months early. Take your pick
The WITCH
Arthur M. Anderson, still going after all these years....
The ship's horn sounds just like a train horn.
Would like to sell hot beverages to the crowd
