@@Jackson099 Dr. Matt Destruction was dealing with chronic illnesses for most of the band's history. He talked a bit about his ulcers in a SPIN interview, for instance. I've been told that his grimacing "rock face" while performing was at least partially from being in actual pain. Not sure if you're aware, but The Hives pretty much lost their life's earnings as a band in the Tambourine Studios/Cardigans lawsuit scandal. I'm not a legal expert, but it seems like The Hives' and The Cardigans' money was used in some money laundering scheme from Tambourine Studios without the bands knowing about it, and The Hives ended up taking the fall for it. Them covering "Early Morning Wake Up Call" was an acknowledgment of that whole situation ("the manager ran off with all the money that you made"). Dr. Matt had been being extremely careful with his money, and was diligently going out on the road and performing night after night to build up a retirement fund for him and his family even though he was chronically ill and in pain. After he lost all that he just couldn't do it anymore - he had probably done it a lot longer than he already should have, medically speaking. I have no idea what his plan is now - I guess to just live very conservatively and take his royalty payments. For all I know he had to get some straight job somewhere. The whole thing's just really sad.
