  • As the MCU grapples with declining relevance, poor box office performances, and heavy behind-the-scenes restructuring, Deadpool & Wolverine stands apart as a shining beacon of hope for fans. Anticipation could not be higher as the third Deadpool film brings the beloved, formerly 20th Century Fox-owned character into the MCU timeline in what is arguably its biggest move in its sixteen-year history. The official trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine promises to change the cinematic universe forever.
While the popularity of the first two films in the franchise would be enough to predict success for the third installment, that's not all Disney is bringing to the table with this release. Between the comeback of Hugh Jackson's iconic Wolverine and all the multiversal possibilities the film is set to pay off, this could very well be the exact project the MCU needs right now. However, one successful movie does not a franchise make, and the MCU is dealing with too many problems right now to hinge everything on Deadpool & Wolverine. When Deadpool came out in 2016, it changed the landscape of superhero films - on its own. The character's explosive debut, with its now trademark meta humor, is the fourth highest grossing R-rated movie ever released, only to be surpassed by its sequel, Deadpool 2, which sits at number 3 on the list. Between the franchise's past performance and the 6-year wait since the last installment, there was never any doubt of success for the third Deadpool film.
The MCU has always needed Deadpool more than it has ever needed the MCU. Even without the Disney-Fox merger, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine could have made a comeback as a Fox-owned character, and fan excitement would have been through the roof. With the extra layer of hype from joining the MCU factored in, Deadpool & Wolverine can be expected to experience record-breaking success.Despite the new life Deadpool & Wolverine promises to breathe into the flailing MCU, the problems ailing the studio will not simply disappear following its release. The studio's most recent projects have severely underperformed, playing a significant role in Disney's unprecedented box office failures. The MCU is continually introducing new heroes, teams, and loose plot threads, while acute superhero fatigue settles over audiences that just can't keep up.
A single film, even one as big as Deadpool & Wolverine, can only accomplish so much as one film in a universe of content. The Multiverse Saga has consistently underwhelmed, and Deadpool & Wolverine is just one of several projects to address the multiverse. The fact remains that the MCU is struggling for many reasons, including the introduction of too many still-unresolved plotlines that fall well outside the scope of a Deadpool outing.
