The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Just about the only opera singer who could do jazz as well as anyone. She was amazing.
It's clear from watching the joy in her performance that her love was the great American Songbook.
One of the few opera singers who could croon.
Eileen Farrell was just salt of the earth. As American as as apple pie, and just a marvelous talent. No diva antics or airs whatsoever.
I’ve never heard an operatic soprano turn it down as well as this. Awesome.
Wow... Eileen Farell's versatility is just mind blowing that she could just as easily be singing over a massive Wagner orchestra as Brunhilde at the Met. She was the one singer Birgit Nilsson felt could challenge her as the preeminent dramatic soprano at the Met.
i think i remember seeing in a youtube comment on another channel than one time eileen farrell was giving a recital in a particular city several eminent singers (i believe including birgit herself?) who happened to be around made a point of being in the audience. no small talent attracts that kind of audience
@@stephenbeale4765 I think that was everywhere. Callas and I believe Milanov both attended her concert performance of Medea in New York.
Her versatility amazes me!! Hearing her sing the blues as incredibly as she did, it's hard to believe she was also one of the greatest opera singers of her time! She had two completely different voices! If you've never heard her sing opera, check out some opera videos of her! There are a lot of them on You Tube. You'll be amazed to hear the totally different voice from this one!
Eileen Farrell was a gifted American soprano who performed opera and popular music in a 60 year career.
That is a GRAND SLAM ! and Ed Sullivan comes at the end and wants an Instant Replay
TWO OF THE GREATEST VOICES THE WORLD HAS KNOWN. PERIOD. (Wonderful - thank you for posting.)
Shes like see I can jam I'm not just Opera 😁 she had the time of her life!
They'll never be anyone like either one of them again!
Two of my favorites' Louis Armstrong and Eileen Farell.
When? When have you ever seen Ed come out and say ONE MORE TIME? WOW
Never seen anything like this performance. Superb & fantastic.
Even the Band was In Awe
That was fun! Loved the high-fives at the end ✋🏻
I didn't know high-five was a thing in 1959!
Love the face of the drummer. It says it all.
i noticed his enjoyment too - especially on their last note on that last recap !!
Mr. Armstrong is such a vibrant man and character rip
Priceless in 2024. Thank you
Ed Sullivan
Louis Armstrong was a legend!
IS(NOT WAS) A LEGEND
Trasuda gioia di vivere da ogni sua cellula ...
Semplicemente meraviglioso!
the days of great songs.......................with great lyrics..................written by great composers.
And from a 2" videotape, no less! The sound quality alone is such an amazing improvement over the earlier kinescopes. (Also a terrific terrific duet!)
So great to hear the verse with its clever rhymes. (Also, high fives were a thing back then? Sweet.)

She sang Verdi and Wagner operas as well as the great American Songbook with the same talent
What a remarkable pairing! Louis never sang opera and Eileen never played trumpet, but just absolute magic singing together!

Let's all take our masks off and live it up.
In this, she sounds a little like Judy Garland.
Same generation but that's where the similarity ends for me.
