Fly Fishing the Madison River in Bear Trap Canyon

Fishing on the Madison has been tough this summer so we decided to try Bear Trap Canyon which is below the Ennis Lake dam. Of all the years we have fished this area we had never tired this wading stretch, and we needed a break from drifting the boat and rowing. #flyfishing #montana #flyfishingmontana #flyfishinglife
What a great find! The area is beautiful, it was not crowded and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. We spread out and had success with nymphing in the pools and runs. Caught some nice sized browns and rainbows, saw a rattlesnake(ugh) and bald eagles. One of them had caught a fish and was chowing down on it - check out the video. A fellow fisherman alerted us to a bear sighting right before we arrived - it really is bear country!

It sure is, we love fishing in the canyon as well as on Lake Ennis. Nice change from drifting or wading the main river.

Can you drive in past the dam? Or do you have a to hike all the way?

Yes there are a couple of parking areas past the dam. You will reach a point where the road stops. Listen for the sirens and move out of the water if they sound them. That happened to us both days we fished it. The water did not rise that fast. Have fun..watch for snakes and carry bear spray.
