  • A trip aboard the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry mv Hebrides from Uig in Skye to Tarbert in Harris on a beautiful summer's day. Boarding, the journey, a tour of the ship, and disembarking. Travelling with a dog and, most importantly, eating CalMac's World Famous Cal-Macaroni Cheese!

      She's my favourite ship. I'm sad to hear they are building a replacement. We all know whatever replaces her will be clinical and soulless :(

      Andrew Ditton yeah they will be in 2018 or 2019 i think they will just keep hebridies as a spare boat there also replacing the caledonian isles on the Ardrossn brodick route aswell

    Hi. Thanks for the upload of the vids. Never been on a ferry with a vehicle before. Found your channel and really appreciated them so I can get a feel how to "enjoy" the experience of them on how what to expect etc. Looking to go to Islay camping next year. Thanks again. Will check a few more and hopefully you have uploaded a vid to Islay.

      Stephen Rush Thanks Stephen, sadly no video of Islay. I went there in April but it was for a college assignment so I had no time to film or edit. I enjoyed the campsite at Port Charlotte but had a very bad experience at the one in Port Ellen so no plans to return just yet. Have a great time and enjoy the distilleries!

      Andrew, that's a bit of a shame as we were looking at staying at Kintra Farm, I think that's Port Ellen. Would that be anything to do with the site owners or a gear malfunction? I fancied Kintra over Port Charlotte due to the remoteness.

      Stephen Rush Despite the web saying it was open, it wasn't when I visited, and i was sent away with a flea in my ear and ended up spending the night in a lay by before leaving the island 3 days early. Everyone I spoke to told me that this is not an uncommon occurrence and there were three of us on the ferry who had all either been turned away or took one look and turned back. Lots of 'do this' and 'don't do that' signage. My honest, objective account was rejected by UKCampsites so I would read heavily into any reviews that have made it past the moderators.

      Thanks Andrew. Will bear that in mind. I did note the owners could be a little temperamental shall we say. Looked at the UK campsite and Trip Advisor and thought I fancied a challenge, although with a tent it's not as easy if turned away. Thanks.

      Stephen Rush In all my years of visiting the beautiful Scottish Islands this is the only bad experience I've ever had, which makes it all the more unfortunate. On the contrary, the folks at the Port Charlotte site were so lovely and the views are great. Other great campsites on Mull (near Fionnphort), Arran (I enjoyed Lochranza), North Uist (Moorcroft) South Uist (Kilbride) Harris (Lickisto) Barra (Scurrival) so plenty of choice!

    Shame they are replacing Hebrides, wanted to travel on her at some point, knowing me that will take a while lol. Im allways on the MV Loch Seaforth to stornoway and it would be nice for a change. then again, will probably have to take the ferry across to the mainland directly, seen as the Hebrides berths at Skye. Great Video Andrew, defininatly on my list of things to do. Just thought as well, hebrides might be a relif vessel for the stornoway-ulapool route so i still might lol.

      Ha ha! Ferry Fetishm is easy to acquire. Even when I'm 600 miles away in
      London I still check the CalMac app to see how they are all doing :)

    Hi Andrew love your videos. We get our first motorhome in June and hope to fulfil the top of my bucket list (probably next year once we get used to using the van) that is a trip to the Outer Hebrides. Like you we have a small dog (Tuppence!) I have heard that on some of the ferries the dog will need to remain in the van throughout the journey. I'm not sure that he will cope with that very well and would like to avoid finding ourselves in that situation. I always get a tingling on my spine when I see a CalMac ferry and very much look forward to our first trip on one. Can you advise us of any services with pet restrictions? Thanks. Keep up the great work

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  6 лет назад

      You'll be delighted to know that Tuppence can travel with you on board every CalMac Ferry as they ALL have pet areas. Tuppence will need to stay on a lead, not up on laps or seats, and travel with you in the doggy lounge or outside and is not allowed in the cafes or bars. Bon voyage, Turas math dhuibh!

      Thanks Andrew, that's one problem solved. Just got to get my wife onto a boat now!! At least we can go down into the doggy lounge and not sit up on deck getting cold in a fresh Atlantic 'breeze'!!

    I wanted to visit Hebrides (H&L) in June. We are going by ferry and i wanted to know if we should be worried for bad weather and if there is any danger for the ship. Thanks a lot!

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  3 месяца назад +1

      No danger at all. If the weather is too bad, the sailing gets cancelled and you’ll be rebooked onto a later ferry. The weather can be bad at any time of the year.

      Yes you can with CalMac, there are pet lounges on most ferries.
