  • Soaring prices of food, energy and other essentials are pushing many UK families to the brink as the winter months approach.

In the first of a series of films: 'Families on the Frontline', Newsnight spent time with two families to see how the squeeze is being felt by them.
One mother, Kat, is now using her local food bank for the first time having previously donated to it in the past. At home meanwhile, her television and wifi have been disconnected in an effort to save on bills.
Another mother, Sanaa, who has her seventh child on the way, is feeling the strain on the family purse as the price of food and clothing increases.

This isn't about poverty or life choices. It's about the crunch of inflation, how it's affecting households. And financially there is a general rule of thumb: your household should have enough money to survive between 3-6 months with no money coming in.
She's a stay at home mom. They have six/seven kids. No fvcking way they are that financially stable on one income. I don't think it was intentional but, this video sure showed how irrational their situation is.

I find that affirmation untrue. Because the interview is all about comparing the prices then vs now. If a mother with a hundred children could feed and dress them 4 years ago and now they can`t aford the same things, it`s because the price of living is generally going up.

Why do you pick the woman with a 7th kid on the way and a woman who you repeatedly focus on her vape pen? Is it because you want people to think all the poor are just irresponsible with their money by vaping and making tons of babies? That’s not why they are poor, and by focusing on those things you distract from the difficulties low income people are facing. It’s a real issue for people and they need the media to highlight that struggle as a way to rally community support to make sure lawmakers don’t forget about them in this time of global inflation and struggle. You had a chance to help and in my opinion only distracted people from caring as much as they should. Your news media shapes opinion and can be a tool for encouraging change. Use it wisely.

Jamie Oliver’s YT channel is replaying his Ministry of Food series from 2008. Hopefully it will help some people to stretch their food budget further.
It is cheaper to cook from scratch, but when you first start it’s more expensive because you need to buy bottles and jars of different condiments and spices etc to make a certain thing, and even if you only use a teaspoon of that ingredient, you need to buy the whole bottle. Yes you’ve then got it the next time you want to make that dish or for a different recipe that uses it, and over time it works out cheaper, but if your cupboard is bare because you’ve been buying takeaways it will cost a bit to set up your store cupboard with the staples and the flavours. Short term it is more expensive, long term it’s cheaper. Unfortunately people are already so stretched that investing in stocking their store cupboard is too difficult to manage.

    • @asahdo
      @asahdo 2 года назад +8

Takeaways are expensive but unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy.
Cooking takes time which could be spent on trying to get additional income. It also takes more gas and electricity to cook proper meals than microwave meals or instant noodles.
Some vegetables are cheap (particularly carrots, baked potatoes, etc) but most fruit are very expensive except bananas.
More to the point, you can’t live off of just simple fruit and vegetables. You need healthy sources of fat and protein and these are what are expensive. Nuts, fish, olive oil and avocados. That’s where the money goes when trying to eat healthy.

The cost of living crisis appears to be a global problem, although here in the UK it has been made worse by the increase in the prices of many goods. For a start off, with 7 kids the younger ones can wear hand me downs. Just need one new outfit each for summer and winter for best wear and that could be picked up in the sales/TKMAXX. Outside of that, time to scour the charity shops for clothes and toys. Find a brand new toy, package it as a Christmas/birthday present. Keep an eye out for sales for buying little gifts for family and teachers.
Amazing what you can pick up. One year I picked up the most beautiful cups and saucers for my son's teachers for £2 each and filled them with Lindt chocolates. Just last Saturday I picked up the most perfect matching cup saucer and plate in Royal Worcester for £4. Some charity shops even sell brand new items.
On the point of jeans. I know that they are expensive, but if you buy Levi jeans they have a lifetime guarantee, they can be bought from outlet stores at a huge discount and if they get ripped or torn or zip in them busts, Levis will repair them for FREE. Makes them good value if you are handing them down year after year.
Food can be more difficult, because kids need decent nutrition. But even then there are ways and means. Buy at the end of the day marked down goods and freeze as much as possible. Buy smoked salmon offcuts add to creamy pasta serve with boiled peas. I buy venison burgers at 4 for £2 and I use them to make meatball pasta.

I'm the sole carer to my disabled 5 year old who only goes to school 90 minutes a day, I don't have family to care for him he hasn't got a mum in his life and I can't afford over £1000 a month for childcare and even if I could they wouldn't take him because he needs specialist support.
The past 3+ years I've had my son on my own, in that time I've had 2 part time jobs during the pandemic, built a website with over 1000 unique products and from over 50 retailers I worked solidly for about 6 months on that and couldn't get funding in the end because of ccjs, I've been my mums representative in her divorce for the past year and a half, doing everything the other party spent £6000 for a solicitor to do so far. I was also volunteering for a local community group once or twice a week and up to the day I had my son full time in my care I worked full time in construction while I spent 22 months at court for custody. At one point I took a job as a cleaner at Tesco at 6am when I had my 6 month old son having to drop him off at 5.30am to go and do what ever work I could but my family who could care for him cant anymore.

Government needs to start offering incentives to couples to have more than 1 or 2 kids and build back up this countries population and ease the aging population problem. £200 extra a week for a 3rd kid, £400 for a 4th. Double the population of this country. More people of a working age earning money paying taxes helps to pay for state pension.
