Ma'am, how do base out prisms help in divergence insufficiency?

Divergence insufficiency produces esotropia. Now imagine one eye to be esotropic. The image of an object falls more nasally rather than on the fovea. By placing a base out prism in front of the affected eye the image is deviated towards the base of the prism, that is more temporally. Either a correcting prism that places the image directly on the fovea may be used, or a relieving prism which has a power slightly less then that may be used wherein the image is formed closer to the fovea and then the patient uses a little bit of his own fusional vergence for the remaining part. Draw a diagram & you will get it
