Therapist reacts to Ohne Dich by Rammstein

  • Therapist Analyzes the lyrics of Ohne Dich by Rammstein to discuss the ways in which loss can fundamentally change the way we view the landscape of our lives. The internal pain, becomes reflected back to us by our external landscape. The song ends with beauty and loss co-existing and when people listen to this song they can use it to help them climb the mountain to that place.

This song is actually about the band sticking together after almost breaking up. It is about friendship, helping out each other. Bringing a friend to the summit, even it is the last thing. But of course Rammstein lyrics are open and complex and can be transferred to whatever the listener wants to.

@@jacobpaulson23 The break up issue was after "Mutter" in 2002. "Ohne Dich" came out in 2004 - "Haifisch" in 2010. Also there is a hint at the beginning of the "Ohne Dich" video: We see Till alone at the creek, the band in the back looking at him. Then one band member is tapping his shoulder encouraging him to (re)join the gang ...

Based on the fact that he wouldn't move even an inch more no matter the case, even when lying down, one can quite safely assume his hurt his spine and not his leg, ending in tetraplegic. More than the symbolic of an obstacle to overcome, it's the impossibility to go further and the friends being the (only) solution, even though indeed all knew how it would end

Hello, my name is Uwe, I come from Germany and have been a Rammstein fan for 25 years. I really enjoy watching your reaction videos. You get to the point, and I love looking into beautiful eyes. Sorry. One might assume that the song "Ohne Dich" is a love story? But in reality, the song, written by Till Lindemann, is about the solidarity of the band RAMMSTEIN. The words "Ohne Dich" are meant to say that all six band members are only strong together. That without the others, it's not worth making music, continuing their art as it is! One of my particular highlights, Rammstein. Till is the best songwriter I know in Germany! But thank you for your great reactions, please keep it up and more from you! Thank you.

From JBrach: @KattMurr It sounds like you're letting yourself feel your grief in an incredibly healthy way by letting the tears flow. 2 years is a long time yet a short time to process grief and I can imagine that the waves of those emotions have ebbed and flowed during that time. My experience with grief has been that some days I don't think about it and others it hits me like a brick. Tomorrow is my mom's birthday, who I lost 3 years ago, and it's a brickier one of those times. I hear you on that soul crushing-ness of grief. I feels like there is no one who can ever be like them or have the same kind of love you shared ever again. It feels like you're in the middle of a downpour and the water just won't stop. It feels like you're in the middle of a black hole just drifting into oblivion. I'm with you my friend. As you are in this pain I am here to tell you you are not alone! The days are dark but there is always light ahead, as cliche as it sounds, there is always more love to experience in the middle of and on the other side of our darkest valleys. You can live your life in honor of the one you lost and keep them at the forefront of what you do and who you choose to be. I am with you in this pain and I will be keeping you in my prayers! <3

From PenArt: @KattMurr *I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. Losing someone so close and so important is like having a piece of your heart broken off and you feel that missing part ache and hurt when you think about them, and then the tears can’t stop and suddenly you’re drowning and suffocating. All air seems lost and breathing seems impossible. Loss is so confining and causes such a lonely misery. I wish I could help you glue your heart back together. Or take away the pain of grief. I told a friend of mine this because I believe it to be true, but the more the grief hurts, the more you love them, because grief is love with nowhere to go. I’m so glad you’re such a loving friend, and I know your bestest friend loved you too, that’s why they were your friend. But all that love becomes so heavy once it’s become grief, and it chokes the joy and life right out of you. I wish I could tell you how to breathe underwater, but the only way is to take in a deep breath once you break the surface. But I see you! Kicking your way back up and reaching up again! I know it’s hard and the water’s heavy, but we’re reaching back to pull you in! I promise that grief will heal and you will love again!!! :face_holding_back_tears: :purple_heart:*

It never leaves you and no matter how long or how far you go a single moment can bring the loss and the pain back. If you know someone who's feeling this then just hold them tight and let them know that they're alone because I can guarantee thats how they feel 😢

    • @HeartSupport

From lu2910: @AcidBathFreakshow I am so sorry for your loss. Grief is something that we can think we've processed and the next thing you know, all of the emotions come flooding back in and you feel so devastated and alone. It is a very powerful and very consuming emotion, I understand your hurt my friend.
Know that through my screen, I am giving you a big hug. I have felt similar loneliness to how you are feeling and I promise you that it will not last forever. Although those we lost are not here with us physically, we are not alone. I see those I lost in the kindness of strangers, the wind in trees, and the sky when the sunset is extra pink. Sometimes I will have thoughts like "she would be so proud of me now if she could see me", and those make me know that no one is ever really gone. Their memories will always be with us, and those memories are what help us to live a life worth living that would bring them joy and pride.
I am here and I am grieving with you. I am blessed that someone like your friend was able to know and be known by you, that is such a gift for you both. As you process this grief, know you are not alone. The memories and happiness that you had and felt with your friend will not leave you. Know that I care for you deeply and I feel your grief my friend. You are so very loved <3

    • @HeartSupport
      @HeartSupport  Месяц назад +1

From reem182: @AcidBathFreakshow Thank you so much for that encouragement. Everyone needs to know that they are loved, and I want you to know that you are loved and cared for deeply my friend. Dealing with loss and attempting to cope with it is SO incredibly difficult. It's not something we can simply fix with therapy or medication or even a new friendship. That person is gone and it feels impossible to move on without them.
I don't know why we go through things like loss, and I wish I could say the words that would take your sorrow away. But while I don't have all the answers, I want to share what I do know. I know that regardless of how hard it might get and how heavy your grief might feel, you are grieving alongside so many other people right now who also feel similar pains. And while that might not take away your pain, you can continue pushing knowing that you are not alone and that there IS hope and joy in the midst of this loss.
When I've struggled with really heavy situations, I often feel like I have to get past them in order to feel happy again. I've learned that living like that only brings disappointment, because the reality is, our lives are filled with suffering. But we can choose what to do with it. For me, knowing that there is a God who grieves alongside me and offers me eternal love no matter what I am going through has been the only thing that has kept me going. And no matter what you believe, that same unconditional love is available to you too.
Ultimately, no matter where you find yourself today, I firmly believe that joy and peace are not as far as they may seem in this season. You are not wrong for feeling sorrow after three years, and you do not need to overcome that sorrow in order to feel happiness. Right here, right now, just as you are, there is hope and love for you. You are loved eternally and you are NEVER fighting alone. I am praying for you right now my friend, thank you for being honest and for being here.

What you gotta love about Rammstein is the beautifull poetic way to describe horrific events. It is a grammatical contrast. Special examples are Dalai Lama and Spieluhr.

I grew up on Rammstein, actually living near the singers birth town. Rammstein never fails to get me emotional. Especially as a native german speaker because their lyrics can be interpreted in so many ways. They are always playing with the language and i absolutly love it.

It's lovely to hear your take on this song. I am a bit disappointed that the part which has resonated so much with me for about fifteen / twenty years isn't mentioned. "Without you I cannot be, with you I am alone too. Without you I count the hours, without you, with you the seconds stand still, they aren't worth it." It would have been great to hear your thoughts on the second parts of these sentences. With respect, I think you largely misinterpreted this one.
As someone with autism and an anxiety disorder, the lyrics almost perfectly describe how I feel about a romantic relationship. Something I've longed for for such a long time. 32 now, never had a proper one and at this point I don't think I can. I think it'd be too much for me to deal with when so often I can't even deal with myself.

From lu2910: @dystopiawanderer I'm sorry that such a meaningful part of this song has been neglected, it definitely is a beautifully written and meaningful part. I appreciate you sharing and being so open about what this means to you and why it holds such significance. You relate the lyrics very beautifully.
To feel like you couldn't handle a romantic relationship yet to so deeply want one must be so frustrating and isolating. I'm sorry that romance has been such a painful thing for you throughout your life. I want you to know that you are a complete, valid, and amazing person just as you are. You do not become more of a person, better, or any less respected due to a relationship. Think about people in your life who are single, do you view them as less than people who are dating? In our world, there are so many things that take up so much of our time. We have hobbies, work, friendships, family, and so many more obligations that for some of us, a relationship just isn't feasible. One of my good friends has been single since I've known her, and once when we were talking she told me that she was actually perfectly content where she was. She said since she prioritized her work, schooling, and friendships that she currently had so much, she didn't think she had time for a relationship nor did she need one to feel complete.
With all that being said, I completely feel your hurt of feeling lonely. Let me be the first to tell you that you can have a relationship. Whatever lies that the media of anything else might tell you about dating when you have autism or anxiety is a complete lie. The right person will understand you and not let things out of your control get in the way.
One thing that one of my friends told me that has changed the way I look at relationships is "I don't need a relationships, I want one". This has made me realize that you are not a failure for being single, nor are you missing a piece. You are a complete person, and I know that there is much more to your identity and who you are than your singleness, more to you than just your autism and anxiety. You are very loved my friend, even if it is not in a romantic way. I hope that I am able to help you see that <3

This song ALWAYS makes me cry. It is so sad, and with me losing my father last year, it is how I feel right now. I have never read the translation, but I have felt it. As I stated before on a video, I have recently been diagnosed as severely depressed and am in need of help.

From runner12: @txmale1977 Thank you for reaching out and sharing. I am so glad you are here! I’m sorry that you lost your dad last year. Losing a parent is an extremely difficult and painful thing to go through. Grief is not an easy road to navigate and there is no one right way to grieve. Reaching out for help is an important step and we are here to support and encourage you. Depression can feel suffocating and overwhelming. Like you’re lost in a sludge of fog with no way out. It can be exhausting and lonely. One thing Ive learned after years of struggling with depression is that the fog doesn’t stick around forever. Despite every fiber of our being telling us it will never end, somehow it always dissipates. A spark of light will appear and that’s when we need to grab on, focus on it and trust that there’s a turning point right around the corner. I truly believe there is hope even when it doesn’t feel that way. Our feelings often lie to us. I pray that you find comfort and healing as you continue to move forward. You are loved and I’m rooting for you!

From bmao: @txmale1977 Thank you so much for bearing your heart to us, not only on this video but on multiple videos. I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your father. That loss must be crushing- the one who was there to raise you, to teach you, to guide you through life is suddenly no longer here for you, and that is crushing. On top of such a hard period of grieving, you have to navigate the waters of being diagnosed as severely depressed. Life has its ways of throwing curveballs at us that feel so unfair, so uncalled for, and so out-of-the-blue. We're often left standing at the plate, trying our best to swing and coming up short, or just getting hit hard by wild pitches we didn't see coming. These hits can sting for a long time, but eventually the pain will fade. The fact of the matter is- even though we face these curveballs, you are ready for them. You've already made it to the major leagues. All of your life you've been overcoming disappointment, heartbreak, and loss, and though those struggles still weigh heavy, you find the opportunity to grow through the pain every time.
It is also so incredible that you are able to resonate with the power of music through your struggles. Though people will come and go, music will always be accessible. I've personally had some of the most cathartic and recentering moments of my life while crying to music that speaks to my heart. Lean into the power of music. Let it bring out your emotions and don't be afraid to let those emotions climax. We all need a good cry from time to time, especially when we are going through struggle.
Remind yourself that you are strong, you are gifted, and you are equipped to handle any pitch that life throws your way. You can't be taken down by a couple rogue curveballs. You are worthy of the amazing life laid out ahead of you. We at HeartSupport are always here for you if you need to talk more. You are so so loved. Holdfast- we believe in you.

From DyllonKG: @Vonriga Hey my friend. Thank you so much for posting this and for being so vulnerable with something so personal to you. And I am beyond sorry to hear of the loss of your fiance.
I'm even more sorry to hear that her passing has kept you in what reads like a point of stasis for so long. That sounds like an impossible situation to be in. And I don't blame you at all for how you feel.
I can't say that I would feel totally different given the circumstances. I imagine carrying the grief and weight around. A pit in my stomach that grows hungrier each day until it's fed off of everything.
You mention planning on joining her this year. It would be tone deaf to say "life is worth living" or "you should stay" knowing even just some of what you've gone through. I've been on the same ledge you're on before. Just in different circumstances. Different reasons. And what I really wanted, in those moments, was just a solution. A fast one. An easy one. A way out of the cycle that I was trapped in.
I'm glad that I never wrung the rope between my hands tight enough. I wouldn't be able to be here in this moment with you. Hearing you. Dipping my feet into the frigid waters you're wading in. For that, Im thankful.
I don't think you should go. I think that there's a chance that there is some way for you to continue, here, and heal. Help. Grow. That's the belief I have anyway. Though I know it may not feel that way at all.
And I understand that. I would love if you had time to reply. To chat. Or if you had time to post here to keep us up to date on your life. And I hope you're safe.
Thank you for the opportunity for connection. Hold fast, friend.

3:04 i definitely feel that way. Lost my first love and only true love in 2016 to a car accident. Got the date and her last note to me (the end where she said i love you, - Kayla) and her handwriting tattoed on me and her initials on my thumbs. I'll never find a love like that again. No one has ever made my heart so full and happy and content on this earth. The amount of joy I got from seeing her face is beyond what I can explain into words to anyone else. I've never felt love such as that before or since. And i never will. I'll never heal from her loss. And I'll never be the same man I was when I was with her. The most sensitive, beautiful, loving, innocent, caring, empathetic, lovely creature I've ever come into contact with. I fell in love the first moment I saw her, literally. 2 days later we were dating. I loved her more than anything. And yet. I couldn't protect her. Yet I blame myself for something completely out of my own control. She was too pure for this world. Too sensitive. Too loving. Too innocent. But she still deserved life. The world became darker forever the day she left it. But my god, do I miss every fiber of her being every single day that passes is like breathing in fire and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Like being waterboarded and stung by a 100,000 bees at once every 20 minutes. I love you Kayla. Forever. Let not a day go by I don't carry your memory and feel the immense burden and pain of your passing.

The song, "Ohne Dich," was made after the Mutter Album (when they almost broke up).
Rammstein is like a democracy. Every member is heard, and all must agree before anything gets passed.. When they began having problems, they decided to go to counseling both as individuals and as a group.
In an interview, Richard Kruspe(lead guitarist) said that Rammstein is like a marriage but without the sex.
Ohne dich shows unity in the band, and Richard said the most important thing is to stick together. Everything else is irrelevant
"Rammstein follow their own rhythm. We never give a shit about the people who think we need to get a record out every two years, and that's one of the reasons w ashy we're still together with the same lineup. We take care of each other, and if somebody needs to take the time off or do something else, we listen."
    Richard Kruspe(lead guitarist)

Rammstein is incredible. I'm German, so I really find every little message in Tills lyrics (Lead singer, Till Lindemann). The way he accentuates certain words and syllables is incredible. They have a few lets call it "fun" songs, but also tons of ballads and soft, emotional songs. They really helped through some fairly hard times. Just for your information:
Lead Singer (The one who died in the vid): Till Lindemann
Lead guitarist (Black spiky hair): Richard Kruspe
Rhythm guitarist (Short hair and beard): Paul Landers
Bassist (Tall one without hair and the brown beard): Oliver Riedel
Drummer (Messy dark hair): Christoph Schneider
Keyboarder (In this video, long brown beard and glasses, normally no beard and very thin): Flake Lorenz

I agree with the hope aspect, it’s been 6 years since I’ve lost my wife and it truly was a life and perspective changing event. I’ve learned see the beauty In everyday life, not that I don’t miss her any less, but what I’m able to see from the way she would see the beauty of little things. It’s the little miracles that make up the whole.

You don't need to speak German to feel the grief and loss communicated in this song. It reminds me of losing my dad when I was just 21. I don't think I've ever grieved as deeply and for so long after losing him. It really felt like the whole world had shattered for me and there was nothing that could ever make it whole again.
That's what's great about Rammstein songs, they're so cathartic.
If you watch the "making of" video about this song, the director says that the storyline of the video is that the band are climbing to the top of a place like Mount Everest, where the physical resources needed to get to the top and back are so perilous for the individual climbers that for most climbing expeditions if someone were to be sick the party would simply leave them behind to die because trying to save them will lead to the surviving climbers' own deaths.
In the video not only the man who fell dies at the end, they all die. The other members of the party decide that it is better for all of them to go to the peak and experience it together than to leave one of them behind.
It is quietly decided in the tent that this is a journey that they must all take together even though is will mean that no one makes it back alive.
The man tapping away with the tool is making their headstone, to let future climbers know that no one in their expedition survived, that they chose to die together rather than leave their friend behind.
It's a very powerful video. Rammstein has a very long history of making these miniature blockbuster movies for their songs.
As someone said earlier, you should really look at the video for Zeit. It's absolutely beautiful and it also deals with loss and the passing of time. You should really do another one of these reaction videos for that song.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. The song is not about hope, it is about despair. And I believe he never made it to the mountain top, everything we see after they put his name on a dish is something he imagines in his last minutes. He dies in the tent. And the lyrics are backing this too, it is not about loosing someone and hoping to get them back, it is about regretting loosing them. I believe the message is not about dealing with lost, it is about dying because of it. Definitely their best video and one of their best songs.
