i know this probably isn’t gonna get attention and idk if all of this is correct or if you know but i’ve noticed your fish tank. you have a betta fish and they can be super sensitive to a lot of things and people tend not to know this buuuut here is some information for you and some things i think you should do with your tank :) -so first i noticed you have neon pebbles. this tends to stress betta fish out with all the bright colors and big shapes. i suggest changing your bedding to a white or black fine gravel. my betta was a looot more happy and healthy with this change. -you don’t seem to have many plants in your tank. betta fish like plants. live plants and lots of them. i bought some plants to scatter around my tank and paradise (my fish) loves to hide in them -i haven’t seen but it doesn’t look like you have a cave or hiding spot for you fish either. you should really think of getting one. it helps the betta when they are stressed betta can live for about 4 years if you take care of them correctly. they can be very expressive and have very vibrant personalities when they are in the right care. i love your aesthetic and your art and i know you are probably just trying to fit with that but betta fish can be quite fragile and need certain things for their heath. if you want to stick with the bright colors then i suggest you get a white fine gravel and an led light for you fish. you should also avoid fake plants because it can give your fish fin rot (they can cut their fins on the plastic) which can kill it pretty quickly. i hope you see this and help your little guy out. i love to see happy healthy bettas thrive in their homes. i hope you have a lovely day and that you can maybe help your buddy out and get him the things he needs :)
I hope you don't mind if I add to your comment! - I may be missing it, but a filter would be a great idea as well. Not only does the stirring on the surface introduce oxygen into the water, but a filter pad (the thing that catches all of the gunk in your water) is a prime location for beneficial bacteria that will help make it so your water is safe! Speaking of which, just as a general tip, when you go to do water changes be sure to only change part (~15-25%) of the water a week via a gravel vacuum (so that you get all of those poops / uneaten food on the bottom!). The reason you don't want to do entire water changes - unless something is terribly wrong with the water - is to help keep beneficial bacteria in the tank (and their effects on the water present), as well as to not stress your little Bagel out. Circling back, the type of filter you use will matter here because bettas are delicate little boys with those lovely heavy fins, and too much current will be hard on them! I like to use sponge filters or filters like the Tetra Whisper filter or something similar. I always found those types of filters had the calmest water flow. To help the current stay manageable, sometimes I'd secure a sponge, piece of filter, or cut-up part of a water bottle below the stream to catch it and soften the impact. Additionally, like the parent comment mentioned, tall plants butting up against the filter outlet can help stifle the current. Combine this with keeping the water level as high as you can, so that the waterfall from the filter doesn't gain as much force. Additionally-additionally, if you're a professional worrier like me and are concerned about the intake on the filter potentially getting your fish, I'd taken to wrapping the intake with something like pantyhose and keeping it out of the way. - This is so important it gets its own point! One of the biggest mistakes I see in regards to tank maintenance is folks doing a whole entire water change weekly, washing their gravel out (removes beneficial bacteria, might crash your tank cycle. If you're interested in learning about TANK SCIENCE! look up the aquarium cycle! It's kind of cool!), and perhaps most crucially, throwing out their filter pad! Inside of the vast majority of filters, there will be some form of sponge or soft baggy with stuff inside who's main purpose is to catch larger chunks of debris in the water. In addition to this, as mentioned previously, this is a pretty hot location for beneficial bacteria to start growing and multiplying. Their main goal in life is to eat ammonia that will naturally start to become present in the water (via fish breathing, poop, or leftover food), and after some time they will be able to convert that super deadly ammonia into not-anywhere-near-as-deadly nitrate! So when folks go and throw out the entire filter pad - aka, their whole colony of beneficial bacteria - sometimes you see that aforementioned cycle crash, fish sickness / death, etc. With this in mind, it's extremely important to make sure you keep your bacteria happy and present. When you got to change out the filter pad in your filter - which, for the record, can be left in there for a LONG time! I know the package probably says weekly, but they just want you to speed through filter pads more quickly so you buy more! in actuality, I wait until my filter pad is literally falling apart to toss it, giving it a wash in a bucket of tank water(!!! not tap water!! it may kill your bacteria) once weekly - instead of throwing out the entire pad, shove a second pad inside of the filter to the best of your ability and leave it for as long as you can. This will give the bacteria a new place to party, so when you throw the old filter pad out, you still have some bacteria buddies chilling on the new pad! An alternative option would be to pick up something called ceramic rings. They typically come in a baggie and look like little baby toilet paper. There are other versions, but the main attraction is the fact that they're made of ceramic and separate from your filter. If you end up with one of these, similar to the previous concept, you can just shove the baggie of ceramic rings into your filter, and then *that* becomes the additional bacteria party zone. This way, you don't even have to stress about your filter - just wash the excess gunk out of this once weekly (in tank water!), replace it, and then don't even stress when you toss the filter pad. I really liked this option when I had aquariums. In my stores, a common brand that sold these little baggies was Fluval! - To further the plant comment, if you do end up getting some plants, some easy ones are Anacharis and Sword plants! Especially Anacharis, I could just let them go and they'd just grow grow grow to where I ended up trimming them routinely. Live plants, while not a requirement, eat up some of the potentially harmful components of your water *and* introduce more oxygen! - While I'd never personally heard of colorful rocks stressing out your fish (could be worth looking into!), it wouldn't surprise me incredibly, as bettas SURE do love to combat anyone and everyone with color to their name, betta or not! - Big ups for the heater!! If you don't have one already, it's pretty cheap to grab an aquarium thermometer! I always like having them just to make sure my heater is accurate and that my bettas were in the right temperature range! Edit to add: A water testing kit will go a long way! The liquid test kits are ideal, but the strips will help too. The important things to test for are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine, and harness. A lot of times they come all together, minus the ammonia which is usually its own strip! Sorry about the text dump, but it does look like you're off to a wonderful start with your new friend!
