  • In this video, we look at the Teenage Engineering OP-Z and how to use Content Mode to access files on the device. We show you how to backup your files on the OP-Z, and how to load custom drum and synth samples. We demonstrate this on a Mac, but it is similar on a PC.

    THANK YOU!!! Much appreciate you taking the time to do this for us all. I hate the deal with the battery, or rather the fact of lack of being able to get a replacement still. But i love it so much i almost wanna get second one if this goes out on me. The sequencer on this machine with added punch in effects, tape track, etc. is just so awesome, But yeah thanks again for the contribution!! 🙂

    Holy shit, thank you. I was pulling my hair out figuring out if i needed the drum utility or not. You summarized all information i needed to know.
    I love Teenage Engineering products, but their customer experience is awful. They do update their devices, but their manuals aren't comprehensive (and the op-z doesn't have a pdf i can print), the website is clunky and confusing, i hear the customer support is terrible. I can't get a new battery apparently..... the fact that the op-z has four separate ways to load drum packs, and they're not all fully cross compatible.
    But one time i asked for a feature to be included, and then they actually did it. Which gives me the feeling the company is fully run by music programming nerds and who's only auxiliary staff is like... a customer service/distribution team of 5 people, a CFO, and the janitor for the building, lol.

      Thanks for your comment. Yea, I believe they are a good company for many reasons. And I think they are more artists and designers than corporate giant with a large customer service department. A bit more boutique but that sense. And they happen to make some really innovative products. Enjoy your OP-Z. Hope you get your issue resolved.

    I'd like to ask a couple of questions. How do you play the saved .opz files on a PC as songs?
    And how do you save or export the songs you created to a PC as .mp3 or other music formats?

    Thanks a lot! With the dropping files to folder method, it works well for drums but not for synth, for synth it works only when I use the sample recording method. Would you know what could be the reason? I make sure to have less than 6 seconds files.

      Hey, thanks for your comment. Synths can be thought of as plugins on the OP-Z. They use synth engines instead of samples like the drum section.

    I have a question about the .engine files, as I don’t own an OP-1. I believe the OP-1 has much more customizable synths... can these be exported somehow to .engine files and placed on the OP-Z? Or are you stuck to the engines that come with the OP-Z and can you only change the parameters of the existing engines, and therefore, .engine is only a set of parameters?

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 лет назад +2

      Hey, great question. My understanding is that the OP-Z synths and drum engines are similar to those on the OP-1. The parameters are very similar and it would be easier for them to use what they already have developed. But when it comes to copying and pasting synth engines between them, I'm not certain that you can do that. The primary difference between them that I have noticed is that the OP-1 is designed to have a synth engine and then a preset within that engine. Whereas the OP-Z just has a singular synth engine which is also the present. I think this has to do with how they implemented the "plug" presets via the app. I'll do a little digging and see what I find on this. If anyone else knows, please comment here. Thanks!

    hey i've got some questions about sample transfering:
    1) All my custom packs are named in app like "User", but I named my .aif files differently. Why is it so?
    2) Some of my packs have less than 24 sounds, but when I transfer it to the OP-Z, OP-Z duplicates the last sound of pack on all empty slots. I really don't like it. I just want a non-full pack.
    I will you appreciate for any advise! Thanks!

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  3 года назад

      Hey, thanks for your questions. I'll try my best to help you.
      1. I'm not sure about the naming convention other than the system may have predefined naming of various parameters and files.
      2. I've seen sample repeating on the OPZ and OP1. It repeats the file to fill space, presumably because all keys need to be filled. A simple solution may be to add some blank space to the end of the .AIF files to fill the maximum time per file. The keys would technically have audio there, but it won't make a sound when those last keys are played.
      I hope that helps.

      @@OllieLoops oh, thanks, but this method is not good for me, cause I very like to use a random step component, and it will be use these "empty" slots :( I will try to make and find full sample packs. Thanks again!

    Drum utility OP-1 doesn't work on Mac OS Catalina. Any suggestions?

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  4 года назад

      Thanks for your comment. There's several critical software apps that aren't supported on Catalina yet. And this is typical of major OS updates that there is a lag until the software catches up. The best thing to do is not wait on updating to Catalina until those critical software apps are supported. It's also wise to have a second computer that you keep on an older OS so that you don't have to worry about updates like this. If you have already updated to Catalina, you may need to wait for the software to catch up. Regarding the Drum Utility, theres a chance it may not be updated. You could create AIFFs in a DAW, Audacity, Audition or any decent audio editor, which isn't as convenient, but it is a solution. I hope that helps.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  4 года назад

      Update: Xfer Records, developer of the Drum Utility, said that they don't have plans to update the Utility for 64bit. But you can extract the .vst and use it in another host. I hope that helps.

      Ah. You have a partial answer. So how do we write Synth Engine files?

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 лет назад +2

      Good question. New plugs need to be loaded via the app, but those are what TE has created. You can store your own preset by pressing track and selecting one of the major keys on the keyboard for 2 seconds. This will save a preset of the current parameters of the synth.
