Dylan wrote this about a relatively unknown movie called The Savage Innocents in the early 60s. Anthony Quinn plays an Eskimo who's a pure soul, ego-less, selfless, sharing, child-like... perfectly embodying the sensibilities of the 60s Free Spirit/Hippie vibes of the day.

Anthony Quinn is/was a great actor and he played many different roles in some classic movies, Lawrence of Arabia, Zorba the Greek, Lust for Life, Viva Zapata, Blood and Sand, Shoes of the Fisherman, and Walk in the Clouds to name a few. He won Oscars for best supporting actor twice for Lust for Life and Viva Zapata. He was nominated twice for best actor for Zorba the Greek and Lawrence of Arabia though he didn't win either time. He was always interesting to watch whatever character he was playing. Though I didn't see this particular movie but if he was in it then it is probably worth seeing just for his performance.

His hushed, ominous riff creates immediate intrigue; its coolness confirmed with Simon’s whispered reaction. Springsteen was interviewed about Blinded by the Light going to #1. He said they changed the words from "Revved up like a Duece" to "Revved up like a Douche". Duece is a reference to Duece Coup which is a 32 Ford. If you saw the movie American Graffiti, it's the yellow car John Milner was driving. Springsteen said so Douce and Douche are different. But the public spoke and Manfred Mann's version went to #1.

""Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)" is a folk-rock song written by Bob Dylan and first recorded during The Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. The song was recorded in December 1967 and first released in January 1968 as "Mighty Quinn" by the British band Manfred Mann[4] and became a great success. It has been recorded by a number of performers, often under the "Mighty Quinn" title.
The subject of the song is the arrival of Quinn (an Eskimo), who changes despair into joy and chaos into rest, and attracts attention from the animals. Dylan is widely believed to have derived the title character from actor Anthony Quinn's role as an Eskimo in the 1960 movie The Savage Innocents.[5] Dylan has also been quoted as saying that the song was nothing more than a "simple nursery rhyme". A 2004 Chicago Tribune article[6] claimed that the song was named after Gordon Quinn, co-founder of Kartemquin Films, who had given Dylan and Howard Alk uncredited editing assistance on Eat the Document.
Dylan first recorded the song in 1967 during the Basement Tapes sessions, but did not release a version for another three years. Meanwhile, the song was picked up and recorded in December 1967 by the British band Manfred Mann, who released it in early 1968 under the title "Mighty Quinn".[7] The Manfred Mann version reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart for the week of 14 February 1968, and remained there the following week.[8] It also charted on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #10, and reached #4 in Cash Box. Cash Box called it a "funky-rock track" with "a trace of calypso [to] add zest to a tremendous effort."[9]
A later incarnation of Manfred Mann, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, included a dramatically different live version of the song on their 1978 album Watch. The single edit omitted the prog middle part (previously released as a standalone instrumental under the title "As Above So Below" on 1975's Nightingales & Bombers) and included a few new guitar solos. Afterwards, the song has appeared on numerous live recordings, the middle part often including long solos and/or snippets of other songs. "As Above So Below" has been replaced with "Oh Well" and in recent years, the band often quoted "Smoke on the Water" as well before returning to the main hook. Therefore, live performances of "Mighty Quinn" often go on for over ten minutes. "

@@bake7148 A cover is a local band that takes a popular song, from a professional artist or band, and performs it as part of their show, with the same notes, same lyrics, possibly a different key. It's a RUclips musician that plays a popular song, from a professional artist or band, and makes a video of it, using the same notes, same lyrics, possibly a different key.
When a professional artist or band takes the lyrics from a song that has already been recorded and nationally released, and rearranged the music, to fit their style, or to just make it sound different, it's a remake. That artist or band have changed the structure of the song.
Example: John Michael Montgomery recorded and released a song called I Swear, to country music stations, and it sold millions of copies. Later that year, Boyz 2 Men recorded and released the same song, and released it to pop and rap stations. It sold millions of copies. One was a country balled and one was a pop/soul ballad. Totally different genres. Boyz 2 Men didn't cover the music that John Michael Montgomery used, they rearranged the music to fit the genre they were targeting.
One of the key differences is that an artist or band isn't going to let another artist cover their work, in a studio, and make money from sales and airplay of their product. If the song doesn't have a certain level of difference, the original artist (that owns that product with the writer) isn't going to let that fly.
There are cover bands all over this country, that get paid per performance. They don't get any royalties for singing any specific song. Once in awhile, a cover band will produce their own unique music. Sometimes those songs are good enough to make waves across the country. They own that song, and they might get signed to a contract, with a record label. They can no longer make money on singing the cover songs that they use to. They become professionals, and have to follow the rules of the trade.

    • @bake7148
      @bake7148 2 года назад

@@darrinlindsey OK. I get your point. Cover, remake, maybe they are not interchangeable terms. Certainly Guns n Roses Knockin' on Heaven's Door would be a remake, and not a cover in this context. I've just always understood that a cover is someone doing a different spin on the original version, because, after all, songs are like snowflakes---no two are alike.

One theory is that The Grateful Dead occasionally played this at their shows and years ago had a wild LSD party in a New York City hotel during a tour visit. Allegedly, one of the party guests was Bob Dylan (who wrote the song). One of the other guests at the hotel didn't appreciate the noise and voiced several complaints. It was actor Anthony Quinn who'd played an Eskimo in The Savage Innocents. Another is that, The Mighty Quinn" is Sheriff Larry Quinlan, who raided the Castillia Foundation land in Millbrook, New York and arrested Dr. Timothy Leary and his group of hippies. Quinlan confiscated all the LSD and other drugs at the scene. In this scenario, the "pigeons" are informers. Thanx fam, Blessings

There’s a great movie with Denzel Washington and Robert Townsend of the same name. Denzel plays an island police chief, and Townsend his lawless hero of the people brother. In addition to this song, you get a treat of Denzel singing “Cakewalk into Town.”

The subject of the song is the arrival of Quinn (an Eskimo), who changes despair into joy and chaos into rest, and attracts attention from the animals. Dylan is widely believed to have derived the title character from actor Anthony Quinn's role as an Eskimo in the 1960 movie The Savage Innocents. Dylan has also been quoted as saying that the song was nothing more than a "simple nursery rhyme". A 2004 Chicago Tribune article claimed that the song was named after Gordon Quinn, co-founder of Kartemquin Films, who had given Dylan and Howard Alk uncredited editing assistance on Eat the Document.

I was too young to see Manfred Mann in their day but in the 90s went many times to see The Manfreds, an offshoot/later version of the band. They then had two of their great singers, Mike D'Abo and Paul Jones, doing all their hits. Paul Jones is big on Blues too (used to have a band called The Blues Band who also were great and I also saw them live a few times).
My Dad didn't go out much and certainly not pop/rock gigs but we talked him into seeing The Manfreds....he loved it! Said 'what great musicians and singers they are'. Dad's been gone over 20 years now, died early 2002. But when I hear anything from this band I always smile, knowing my Dad got a kick out of seeing them play.

Listening to this Manfred Mann song made me think of another song with free spirit/hippie vibes that I like, Burning Bridges by The Mike Curb Congregation from 1970. It was the theme song for the classic WWII movie, Kelly's Heros. One RUclips comment sums up this song quite well when it says, "Ah, the memories of lost loves and marvelous opportunities."

The band was originally known as the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers in 1962 after the band's keyboardist, Manfred Mann, and the drummer, Mike Hugg. Later that year they changed it to Manfred Mann and the Manfreds, and finally settled on Manfred Mann. They added the Earth Band part in 1972. One of their biggest early hits under the "Manfred Mann" moniker was Do Wah Diddy Diddy. Check it out!!!

Manfred Mann had 2 lead singers(at different stages) over their time as being a British Invasion band and this was the second one. The cool thing is a revival version of this band (without Keyboardist Manfred Mann) toured with both lead singers and both Paul Jones (the original) great harmonica player and Mike D'Abo fine keyboardist, sounded great.. This was a Dylan song ,done poppy in 1968. Big hit. Great reaction

You've got the chronology in reverse: in the 1960s, Manfred named the band after himself, and it featured Paul Jones on vocals (Manfred is the keyboard player, remember), and they had hits, notably "Do Wah Diddy". They also did Bob Dylan covers.
However, Jones wanted to be an actor as well as a singer, and work solo so that he could have more flexibility. So he gave his notice (although he stayed for another year before actually leaving) and was replaced by Mike D'Abo (who eventually became the FATHER of an actress, Olivia D'Abo)
They continued having singles, some of their own songs, and some covers, including this, which was a Bob Dylan song. Ironically, their last single "Fox on the Run" had success (#5) in the UK, but is better known here for the cover version done in the 1970s by Sweet.
However, nobody was buying their albums and while you can be successful in the UK by only making singles, that makes you very dependent on the BBC (because they are the primary radio outlet). So, frustrated, they split up.
In the 1970s, Manfred got a NEW band together, named it "Manfred Mann's Earth Band" to distinguish it from the previous group, and they did covers of "the New Bob Dylan", Bruce Springsteen. As you've seen.
BTW, something I didn't know was that while they were transitioning from Jones to D'Abo, the bassist was, for a while, Jack Bruce, who of course left to form Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. Huh. Hard to imagine Jack being with this sort of band.
(And of course, Jack did the singing for Cream, so Mike D'Abo was lucky to get the gig, I suppose. Even if it is hard to imagine the man who sang "White Room" and "Sunshine of Your Love" and such singing this one.)

I went to see them a few months ago and they are still awesome.

Accepting that this song is about an Eskimo shaman/faith healer brings to mind Neil Diamond's 'Brother Love's Travellin' Salvation Show' or Tanya Tucker's 'Lizzie and the Rain Man.' A little more obscure but quite popular around KC in the 80s, the band The Rainmakers had one called 'The Rainmaker.'

The Manfreds are the band I most associate with Swinging London in the 1960s. I used to hang out around World's End in Chelsea about 1968, the tower blocks had been built replacing a number of low rise terraces (I later found out my grandfather had lived in Edith Road , Fulham for a while back in the 1890s so it seemed a sort of coming home. A world of number 11 and 14 buses , walking from the north side of Putney Bridge and then the choice of the Kings Road or back past Lots Road Power Station to the houseboats on the Thames , walk back across Battersea Bridge and the Morganite Works as the waft of Gartons Glucose and Youngs Brewery in Wandsworth came eastwards down the Thames. The odd walk to Sloane Square and the Peter Jones Dept Store in the Winter Snow too.
