The economy of the AX8 wins this battle. I have FXII and AX8 and love them both. I tend to agree that the limit of sound emulation is now reaching a peak. My advice for Live portable rig use the AX8. Thanks for the video very informative.

JDAnalog lol do you even own one or play out? If you play out, guess what the audience is hearing...the local PA and not amp in the room. If you don’t play out, then try one of these in person with a tube amp present. Yes there is slightly different but very close and honestly most people I’ve blind folded have picked the modeler as opposed to the real deal. This was a modeled fender deluxe reverb compared the real deal! Just saying...amp in the room feel is just beating a dead horse these days.

@@bigeclipse718 Exactly . When playing live the sound guy will mic your Cab with some trashed Shure 57 or 58 and run it through the house PA system, AS WELL AS their specific EQ which changes your tone entirely. I have used traditional rigs and an AxeFX2, an the Axe Fx was easily my favourite rig/tone to play live. We tone matched my Album guitar tone so when I played I would ask the engineer for a flat EQ line straight to the back of my rig with cab sims ON (Audience gets my studio album tone). Then I'd run a separate line with cab sims OFF to my Orange PPC2x12 - with no mic and that would be my stage rig for my personal ears. that way as the night goes on and things get louder the sound out front never changed. It was frign epic.

@@ToneOFTheGods I strongly disagree. With the latest firmware release, FW 11.00, Fractal has pinned down the elusive impedance modeling that was more the missing link, than any "cabinet in-the-room" response characteristics. Fractal really put together a phenomenal unit. I haven't played my Mark V since getting the FXIII. I've had the Headrush, Atomic Amplifier, HX Stomp (childs toy) and a few guitar software VST's along with Natihve Instruments Guitar Rig. I have a Mesa Mk V with ext. Cab, Fender SuperSonic 22 with a Celestion Gold, Marshall DSL40c w.Cream back. I have 2 killer pedalboards with Strymon, Empress, Chase Bliss, Free The Tone, Drybell, Origin Effects, Source Audio and more I can't remember. All respected if not outright desirable gear. The Fractal hangs with any of it and surpasses it in many ways. This isn't Line6 POD crap. This is pro level, studio quality gear. .

Not entirely Apples to Apples because the AX8 is going through two more analog to digital conversions running through the AFXlll. I agree. Despite the cable routing, the demos favour the AX8 to my ears. I was listening blind and didn't know the B+W clips were of those of the AX8. I play clean predominantly. The AX8 sounds more pleasing like a real valve/tube amp to my ears. The AXE FX 3 is like a hyped up version of the actual amps. The Vibrolux and Tweed Deluxe that I played sound like the AX8, not the AXE FX 3. Newer and costlier is not always better. Interesting comparison.

  • @zool84

As a guitar player I know exactly how the quest for tone and feel feels like, BUT as producer I think that in most of the cases the difference is so subtle that in a mix, with post eq, compression, reverbs and all the other instruments, plus the mastering nobody could tell what is what. The most important thing is to have a good starting sound and both of these provides it for sure. That being said, the different price tag and usability on a stage become crucial in my choice and that's why I'd go with an AX8.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  5 лет назад +3

One thing i really like about modellers is that it forces you to move away from "guitar brain" to "producer brain" and start seeing the guitar as one element of a piece of music as opposed to the be all and end all. The routing options and channels feature of the III makes it a beast for studio use over the AX8, but the raw sounds are definitely close enough at the moment.

Thanks, Leon. I didn't see your comments about the AX8 being in B+W. I preferred the AX8 in all the samples. It was rounder, chewier, meatier, more "liquid sounding" in the midrange, to use a much derided audiophile term, and tube/valve-like. The AXE FX 3 was more extended and controlled in the highs and lows with better definition by a hair, and a midge faster note attack but harsher sounding overall like a solid-state amp. I much preferred the AX8. Perhaps the AX FX 2 now on sale isn't such a bad deal after all...PS Listen to the Tweed Deluxe comparison and tell me that the AX8 doesn't sound more liquid and sweeter with more even order harmonics? Listen to the Friedman; the AX8 has chewier texture like a real tube/valve Friedman.

4 times more. 2500 isn't bad for (retail) for it really. Kemper is still in that range. I need to do more research but from what I can tell, it does 1000 times more than Ax 2. More than Kemper. 4 separate channels so you can have 2 guitars, a bass, and whatever else on the 4th channel and use it as an interface.

It reminded me Ola's comparison video of new Mercurial SS-11X VS real AMT SS-11B preamp. B&W=Dry & Ballsy, Color=Wet(Moist, or even slightly Damp)& Almost as Ballsy. I wish I had more descriptive words for it, but even after pondering for a few minutes, this is what my offering is. When I see people discusing under this video about "amp in room feel" from digital modelers like Fractal or Kemper (both great units btw), I would say, they all are mixing apples with pineapples. Digital modeler is mostly used - live - with FRFR monitor, so it is monitored sound. Like your amp would be in room behind mic-ed up to your FRFR monitor on stage and you could here only monitored sound. Feel will be very similar then. Digitals are acting like full amp + cab + mic to monitor and trust me. In this case it is so close to final result, that it is stunning. Thats why it is good in studio - because you can do so many mistakes with mic-ing and you are free of this risk in this case and you are getting very good result where you can't even feel much difference in final mix etc. On the second hand, if you would use Fractal without IR simulation into power amp and real guitar CAB you would get very similar result to real guitar "tone in the room" feel. I have been playing with other guitarists with full valve amps with toe to toe result with no issue with my AX8 + power amp + 2x12 V30 cab.

Looking to buy the 3 in the next week. The AX8 sound is almost identical to the 3 BUT the processing power of the 3 is far superior and you can run so many more blocks without hitting the cpu limit. I would probably be just fine with the AX8 but I have said that before and ended up selling gear for upgrades. On the list for the FM3 but I feel I'll want more power (whether or not I utilize it 90% of the time) so I'm just going to buy the best and not worry about my GAS for hopefully another 5-6 years lol.

I missed the text at the start that specifies which is which so I went through the vid not knowing. I prefered black & white every time, which sounded like it has tighter lows with more resonance and a little bit more in the high-mid to high range. After learning black & white was the Ax8, I watched again too see if I'd change my mind with some newer-must-be-better bias but the Ax8 won out again. Hmmmm, surprising. I listened on Sony MDR-7506 studio headphones, fwiw.

I couldn’t tell the difference in sound even though the headphones, maybe you can if you are listening live, in front of the real cab...
But in the future, when they update the software, I believe that’s when we will see the real differences…
Both nice equipment to have on a rig.

  • @TheNocturnalEvil

I think the colored one is the Axe FX III and the B/W one is the AX8. So based upon that assumption of mine here's my verdict. The difference is indeed noticeable but most listeners and players won't care much about it. The difference is in the degree of accuracy in modelling.
The AX8 (the B/W one) sounds extremely close to an amp but its bottom end and harmonics aren't exactly same as an amp and there's a slight background fizz. In a blind test most listeners won't be able to differentiate it from a real amp but a seasoned listener will be able to differentiate it because the difference in harmonics and that background fizz are a clear giveaway.
Axe FX III (the colored one) on other hand sounds exactly like an amp, it has that huge tube amp bottom end, the harmonics sound like an amp, the digital fizz isn't there. I bet in a blind test even the most seasoned listener won't be able to differentiate between Axe FX III and real amps.
The Axe FX III is definitely a significant improvement, but it's certainly not worth extra $1400.
For majority of players AX8 is more than enough. It sounds way better than the overhyped digital fizzbox called Helix, and the huge and heavy Kemper, and is way more versatile than Headrush.
The Axe FX III is more suited for absolute audiophiles who want exact replication of amp sounds and harmonics with utmost accuracy and are ready to pay the extra bucks for that. I don't think most players would need Axe FX III for the time being.

I've been playing guitar for about 25 years now (with a break of 5 years until 9 months ago) and I started researching, what the current, technical possibilities are and how they sound compared to the real amp feeling, I'm used to for decades. As I do not have all the space in the world for several amps, cabinets and stuff, I was really interested in something small, that can do all the sounds with the best result possible. I really was.
What should I say, I kept my Johnson Millenium 150, bought a Marshall 2555HD3 and now have a pedalboard with my favorite pedals on it. Why?
    1. I do think that all these modelers and multi-effect boards do sound sterile and unnatural on Cleans and Crunchs to my ears. The only thing that works most is distortion.
    2. I got lost in all the possibilities and wasted more time searching instead of actually playing. On my pedal board are those things, I think fit the most to MY sound.
If not, it'll be replaced someday. But I do never have things on it, I won't actually use.
    3. I need to feel my music and I only can do it with the sound of an real amp to a cabinet touching my ears. I know that this is the most subjective part of all, but for me it works best this way.
I know that my recordings in the end might not sound as professional as todays most records, but at least I'm working on the settings until (I think) it sounds best + through those little flaws it becomes my music and not a copy of somethings else.
    Cheers

The Johnson Millenium is the OG! Running through a guitar speaker cabinet is 100% the best way to immediately feel at home on any rig. I run direct all the time live and at home but still have a Matrix power amp for those time I want to make my pants flap through a real cab with the Axe.

Axe-Fx III does sound better to me in these clips for the most part, but it's possible that with some tweaking AX8 can sound identical, they just sound slightly different on the same settings. In a mix it would be really difficult, if not impossible to tell the difference, let alone in a live setting where everything is super loud and details go out of the window.
Given that the AX8 is much cheaper and it's also all-in-one solution for recording AND gigging, in a compact and lighter form factor and also doubles as a pedal unit, it seems like a no-brainer to me. Maybe it would be nice if it had an expression pedal built in, but other than that it's all you would ever need tbh, well at least if you are lazy like me and you want a unit that does everything and is easy to carry around.

I hear the opposite. The AXE FX 3 has better note definition and is more extended in the treble and bass. The AX8 is sweeter, chimier and sweeter overall...much like an actual Vibrolux and Tweed. The AXE FX 3 is like a hyped up processed post-production version of the real amps with the treble and bass goosed up. That is what one hears with an amp with high driver damping...in other words, solid-state. I have no dog in this fight. In this demo, the AX8, to my ears, sound much better. The AXE FX 3 sounds harsh to me.
