    I'm one of the people that made it to the end and is "not into this stuff". Climbing and rigging and roping or whatever it's called isn't my bag at all, but I'm a subscriber because I like your approach to and presentation of your investigations. Just formal enough that I feel like I'm seeing valid material science results, just informal enough to be entertained at the same time. Your presentation, whereby we get to see the moments of surprise at unexpected results or satisfaction at expected results, adds entertainment value to what could be very dry content. I ran across the channel while looking into knots and got hooked by the testing to failure of various things and the expression "super good enough", which has been surprisingly transformative for me as a philosophy, having groked its meaning by means of your videos. Making it to the end of this particular video was just a matter of curiosity about the channel generally and hearing how you're discovering a lot of the same things I experienced as part of a small mail order business.

    Love these rambling videos. The few interactions we've had has made me really feel like a part of this community you've built. I'm always grateful for the information in the regular videos, but like you say, life can be hard and it's refreshing to see and hear about the behind the scenes stuff.

    Just wanted to toss my 2 cents in. I'm not one to comment much on any social media but for some reason you struck a chord with this video. First off, I love how transparent and relatable you are, been watching your videos for some time and seeing the progression of the quality really shows. The first few videos compared to now shows that trying and staying committed is paying dividends for sure. If you keep that drive going I don't think you'll have any reason to stress over your store taking off and "making it". And life is short so don't forget to enjoy the ride.

    I've ordered a few times from the store now and its good.
    Half the time when I need some weird specific thing like a Petzl Croll from amazon, rei, or moosejaw its either out of stock, 'backordered', or they'll just send the wrong thing cause maybe the person in the warehouse doesn't know there's a difference between a Croll S and a Croll L. You seem to have good stock on a lot of this specialty stuff. I also appreciate the transparent stock counts.

    The "life is short" mindset is a good one. There will be a point in everyone's life when they regret not doing something before it was too late; so if you want to do something, do it. Especially when you get older, the years just fly by, so don't postpone, just do it.

    As per the getting stuff on the shelf: I had a buddy who supplied for Edilrid, they used to wait until the whole container was full.
    My ohm was stuck for an extra month because people kept adding onto the order.

    • @Iceberg86300
      @Iceberg86300 5 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, shipping a half empty container is just pissing money away b/c, at least for us shipping a lot of aluminum wheels, it's flat rate. Last I heard (2yrs ago IIRC), we were paying ~$2k a container regardless of shipping air or max weight.
      *_Very_* easy to see thin margins evaporate. But wholesalers & retailers not communicating their shipping situation is unacceptable IMO. *_Especially_* when they accept direct shipment/drop shipping.
      I'm looking at starting a side business that's only viable if the stuff comes out of China, and a requirement to communicate & continually update customers on our best guess/good faith shipping estimate is 100% going into all distributor contracts.
      B/c in my experience, at least in the industry I'm trying to break into, people don't have a waiting problem, they have a lack of information/inaccurate information problem. Blindsiding people with slow boat shipping times and/or continually missing landing dates by weeks & months is a straight up death nail.

    I don't know if you can swing it, but a method that larger stores use is to lease/borrow the items on their shelves that they store. Home Depot does not own the majority of the tools sitting on their shelves, they are still owned by the manufacturer and HD cuts them a check when the item sells. Now, you don't have the advantage of being in a duopoly like Home Depot, but you are dealing with some smaller manufacturers that may be down to try it out. Would give you the ability to load up the shelves with less capital.

    I think you're doing great with the store. There is no need to take on a bunch of debt, especially right now. Since it's hard to get money and things are uncertain
    I FEEL like the risk to reward is skewed in the favor of trying to build something which is more robust and letting growth happen more naturally when there is a need. It's better for the mind too lol.
