@@unknownvidds I still keep my old GT 730 2GB (ripped from a junked Optiplex I found by a dumpster) around as a backup. Runs great with Win10, Linux Mint, or Garuda Linux. I call it, "ol' reliable".
These are my favorite builds to do for customers. They have character and I love rescuing older parts and pairing them to make a great budget esports gaming PC. I5-2400 with an RX550 4GB/GTX1050 was the go to for a long time along with an SSD.
@@supernatural2968 basically what I said. An older Optiplex with an i5 or i7 and a GPU that doesn't require a 6pin. They do make sata to 6 pin adapters though, too. Just most the PSUs in these are around 180w or less.
Coincidentally, my kiddo plays on my old gaming computer (already on a budget) that has a I7 and GTX1050/2GB. It's held up really well over the last 6 years, but it's getting close to being time to replace it.
@@ShadyButFresh yeah depending on which i7 it is, you may be able to pair a better GPU with it and keep it longer. Also, just upgrading to an SSD really breathes life and speed back into an old system.

Great video man. I never thought cheap gaming was possible but here we are. I personally just recently purchase a Dell Optiplex 7020 for $22. It’s not the best system in the world but it gets the job done for my computing needs. I already has a fairly well specked system but this one will be my game emulation machine.
when the i7's are too expensive, I always resort to a Xeon E3. the best route on upgrading Sandy/Ivy Bridge and Haswell. it's fascinating how an 3770 and 4770 non K is still almost $100 when an E3 1240 v2/v3 only costs around $30-40

He’s got the fastest cpu I’m pretty sure. I got an 7010 with a lga 1155 socket. And I’m pretty sure the fastest cpu you can get is a Xeon 1620 v2 he said 1625 so I’m not exactly sure but the I7 3770 is apparently the best for gaming but the Xeon is the same ghz and actually gets like.1 or .2 higher with turbo. My 7010 played the new halo for like 5 minutes lol. But I got a gtx1060 3gb and the minimum for halo is 4gb and I need to upgrade my processor cause it’s only 3ghz with 4 cores and threads. I’d bet his setup could run it on 1080p but I play destiny 2 on 1080p no problem. I been stuck on it for awhile. I want to play shatterline. Looks pretty cool.
I made a $220 build few days ago which had i5-3470K 8gigs ddr3 1600 and rx5500XT 4GB along with a 80+ bronze 450W PSU in an old office pc case (with the old lga 1155 motherboard)
I used to have a lot of fun playing around with budget parts/office PCs. Trading up and selling for a new budget build. Now that i have a decent PC with parts thatll last for a few years and all the pretty cable extensions and rgb, i find that its not as fun as what i used to do
Man, I saved up enough for a used 3090 before 40 series came out and it was awesome. Ran into a pinch and had to sell it. Managed to snag a 980 for $50 in the meantime. Knocking it down to 720 30-60fps from 1440 144hz was real humbling. It was a bunch of fun though! Throwback to my early years of PC gaming.
My only complaint with the OptiPlex 3020 MT is that the PCIe slot is only 2.0, while the 7020 and 9020 are PCIe 3.0 and they have 4 RAM slots. Anyway great job on the video!
I have a same Dell PC with i7 4790k and 1050ti. The power supply I added is a Dell 390w with extra plug for a GPU if I want to upgrade. Total cost was $250
Love these old optiplex's got one with an i5 2400 8gb ram and a 1050 that i just mess around with gonna make a little series with it testing cheap ass graphics cards and cpus
At least if the pc can't a specific game you do have the Steam deck to fall back on.I agree this method is a solid and cheap way to get into pc gaming on a budget since it was where I came from in my early pc gaming years.
It would be interesting to see someone review these Xeons to see which are best for gaming and applications where you need them to keep up with a modern GPU like Stable Diffusion work. You got a great Xeon, having a high base clock speed relative to the others. I'm sure there are some you can get that have close to 4 Ghz. speed.
I just recently got a Dell Precision T1650. It has the Xeon E3 1280 v2 with 8gb ddr3 ram, 2 500gb hdd and the Nvidia Quadra 2000 gpu and 265W psu. I ordered another 8gb of ram to bump it to 16gb and getting a RX550 gpu. Along with some adapters and a wifi stick im coming in at about $90 total. My plans are to do light gaming but more for music work.
Great video. Optiplex computers are great for a quick inexpensive mod. 1 updated my old 7010MT that has an i7-3770. Great little gaming machine for little $$$. CPU: i7-3770 RAM: 4x4GB GPU: MSI RX580 Gaming X 8GB (needed to take out the lower drive bays) PSU: Corsair RM550x ARGB Controller: COOLMOON CPU Cooler: Jonsbo CR1400 ARGB (tower cooler with 92mm fan - keeps gamin temps less than 70C. Jonsbo FR925 ARGB reaar exhaust fan Arctic P14 PWM ARGB case fan (cut out a bunch metal case behind the front face plate to improve air flow) 2 CRJ 5 pin fan adapters to connect aftermarket fans (no fan errors). Cheap 90 degree USB3 header adapter as the graphics card covers the header. Cut the side panel to fit an acrylic window.
I've got an optiplex build as well, unfortunately it's a SFF 3020 so I had to use the GT 1030 GPU and it managed to get me through a fair few months while I was doing my custom PC which also has the GTX 1070 and you're right, it really holds up well even today
There so many positive points for building a pc like this, creativity, recycling, humble life, and well fun! Im working in a big hospital with thousands of gray hp and dell pc boxes, and started looking at them like gold mines 😂 soon I'll try getting one old box for me and do my build , very exciting 😁
I saw these budget builds last year, just wanted to get back into gaming and play some old titles from my youth. Got an optiplex 7010 sff with i5 3570 and an RX 550 for €120... €55 spent on a 500gb SSD and more ram (16gb total). The performance I got was a lot better than I hoped. I'm playing RDR2, Metro, Fallout 4 etc. with over 50fps average. I get a kick out of using low cost devices that over perform... My car was €450 about 4 years ago, still going. I built a hifi from spare parts, use it more than my main multi thousand € hifi. Just got an iiyama g2470hsu which has crazy spec for the price. Hopefully I can build a cheap pc in a year or two that can play starfield;)
My secondary PC that I keep in case something with my main rig goes down is an i7 4770, 16GB DDR3 and an RX 480, with a 450w Corsair PSU. It's not high-end, but it's something I built out of spare parts, and I know it'll still handle what I want it to do in the case I have to part with my main PC for whatever reason. And if nothing else, it keeps these older parts out of a landfill.
I assumed you used your existing monitor, but for the scenario of a kid buying his first pc, you should probably have mentioned that cost. Its important to point out that with a system like that there's no point going overboard on a high res, high refresh rate monitor. Great video though. I did something like this about 10 years ago buying an old Xeon server from surplus for gaming and to host a minecraft server. It was great as a server but terrible for gaming.
That was me, I had a Dell inspiration rig with terrible specs and I had upgraded the ram to 16GB which did help. That got me into PC gaming and now I'm rocking a 5700X, 32GBs, and 4070FE. . . . IT TOOK ME WEEKS TO SAVE UP SO I WORKED FOR MY RIG, pls don't attack me.
I bought all the stuff to build this computer and it hasn't got here yet, but I'm very excited. Also with inflation it ended up being $300 but that's fine.
Good video. Dell make 'workstations; built to run 24/7 under stress. That's why they last and make a great second hand buy. They aren't pretty, but they are reliable. i'd choose that over some £1000 RGB loaded pile of junk off Amazon any day. Oh. always replace the CPU thermal paste though.. it;'s usually white dust after this long.
Regarding using such rigs until they break, i tend to use them as such. Because at least for me they become a well kept home and i hesitate to leave them. So if i where in your situation, that 200$ or 200€ in my case, PC would last me until it breaks. In 2012 i got gifted a then relative new i5-2400 with an OEM GeForce (GT545 if i remember correctly) and 8 GByte of RAM on a Cuppertino 2 mainboard. Background was that a friend of mine who knew that i was struggling financially at that time got that from a contract where he had a client that bought a HP and wasn't happy with it, he made that client a new PC and the client told him to simply toss the then relative new one. I over the years upgraded and used that machine until 2017 when i used the parts to make my parents a living room PC out of it because i got my hands on a better machine. Currently i use a Steamdeck of all things as my desktop, wanted one anyway, then energy prices in Germany went trough the roof and seeing that the Deck only eats up to 15 watts for similar results as my former desktop, a Ryzen 5 1600 with a RX 580, that was a no-brainer. My whole setup with two DELL 24" LCDs, a small Nobsound amp and an external 6TB USB HDD eats around 25-30 watts when idle and 45-50 watts when kicked. Installed Vanilla Arch because at that time i had to use the Valve Kernel as not everything was in Mainline yet and with Arch i simply could use Valves repositories. My IDEs, VSCode and cLion, work just fine, as does stuff like FreeCAD and KiCAD. And all the games i want to play run fine enough for me. I intend to use this setup until it isn't feasible anymore from a performance standpoint, and that will be a long way down the road. Maybe when the Steamdeck 2 comes around.
This is almost exactly like what I have. But I just used metal cutters and pried out the hdd cage 😂. Also, mine is a 990 DT with 16 gigs of dual channel ram (4x4 sticks), i7 2600, a 300 watt p3087f5 power supply, Asus Turbo GTX 1060 6 gig, and everything was free except the 87 or so total dollars spent for the gpu. I had a GTX 960 2gig Gigabyte Windforce in there before. (The ram speed is 1333 mhz. I want to upgrade it to a 3rd gen i7 and replace one stick to a 1600 mhz 4 gig module, but don't want to spend money 😅. Great video!
Nice. I have a gtx 1060 3gb. I got for free. Wish I had the 6gb I got a optiplex 7010. For $30 and just grabbed an $11 i5 2320. (I need to upgrade it) it kinda pegs out during gameplay. I got 3 4gb ram and an 8gb ram. I know you aren’t supposed to mix but I had a ts140 with 4x4 but one was pee which is server ram and my computer won’t accept it for some reason. I kinda wish I didn’t Brick it replacing the cpu. Because the lga1150 cpu socket seems to have more options than the lga 1155 but I may be mistaken. I didn’t know games will do better on less cores higher ghz than lower ghz more cores. But the ts140 had a dual core 3.5 ghz I 3 and it ran games better than the quad core i5 3.0/3.2 ghz. Oh well I’m gonna get the Xeon 1620 v2 or the i7 3770. You can find them on Walmart.com by private sellers for $20-$30 then I’ll go for a better gpu. I actually saw a gtx 1060 6gb for $50 on Facebook marketplace.
i play on a core 2 quad e8200 that bought for 1 eur! 15eur on 4gb more of ram, a 250gb ssd and a 20eur gt640. Play almost any game till 2017 and even new games not too complex are also playable. Now bough a hp elitedesk i74790 16gb ram and ssd250gb for 130eur! a 2nd hand rx580 and a new power supply. As soon as the cable adapter arrives from ebay (stupid hp specific connectors) i will have a perfectly modern gaming pc for 250eur...
ive been considering making one for flip builds but idk. can make an am4 system for $50-$100 more and have way more upgrade paths and general longevity. this is however the best price to performance optiplex build ive seen, blows ztts outta the water.
@@JasonWitmerYT im actually contemplating making a techtube channel to show off my flipping adventures. my most recent build has a ryzen 1600 for $20 with a cooler, an rx570 for $30, 16gb ram for $30. tldr grand total of build was $260. yours graphically dominates because of the 1070, but mine is not nearly as dated hardware/ new quality. longevity is a big deal to me and we are now moving into the age of ddr5. not to mention the capability to upgrade all the way to a 5th gen ryzen
I love these builds and hate the people that shame them... my main PC is a Dell precision 5810 (got free from work), E5v3 2667 processor, 24 GB DDR 4, I upgraded the power supply to the Dell 625 watt, added a GTX 1070TI, an SSD with windows 11 pro, and wala! a decent gaming PC! all for well under $300! It plays everything well at 1080P high settings
Another t5810 owner here. Got it from a local refurbisher for around 200€(coverted from ron). Mine has the e5 1620 v3, 16gb ddr4, 685w psu with dual 6 pin and an rx 470 8gb. Slapped in a 25€ 480gb kingston ssd and everything works fine so far
i honestly wouldn't mind using this computer at all. I'd get a new case for it and install a big cooler that hides most of the motherboard as I'm not really a fan of green motherboards lol
I used to agree with not splurging on a pc and just settling on a budget but then i got a budget and having to upgrade things every 1 - 2 years is super annoying id rather just build a 2k pc now and not worry about it much for the next 5-7 years when itll pretty much just need a graphics card
for around 150 pounds you can get 16gb 6 core Xeon if you go with IBM Think Centre psu is normally platinium 900 watt psu with two 8 pin connectors be warned you cannot replace the psu with an off the shelf model its bespoke to IBM but it can literally handle any graphics card you throw at it
Ive been using a lenovo ideapad for 5-6 years and just want to play games at 30-60 fps, couldn't even get 20 on tf2 and would crash trying to load into csgo, that garbage was 350$ and was a huge waste of money, glad im finally upgrading to an i5 6500 and a gtx 1050ti 16gb ddr4 ram with a 1tb ssd, was an amazing find for 200$

I've been pretty vocal online against the 80+ white PSU's, but not because I think someone should spend $100 on a PSU for one of these... more that they're lower quality than the PSU that came in the Optiplex. I've seen A LOT of 80+ white units release the magic smoke, especially the ThermalTake models. They're just built REALLY cheap. I suggest people spend about $10 more on a half decent 80+ bronze unit like the EVGA BR series, the Thermaltake Smart BM2 and sometimes the Corsair CX or CXm series. And thanks! Love your channel! If people can afford a better PSU, I totally agree with you. I just get annoyed by some know it alls in the comments who say some really dumb stuff like “I only use tier A power supplies” when it’s like a $100 gaming pc - this space is full of privileged elitists who don’t realize that most of the world might not have access to it or can’t afford it. I started out with an office PC I found in a barn, and I've spent almost $600 on it. it's still a piece of crap because my RAM is incompatible and my PSU never showed up, but the i7-4790 and RTX 3050 did show up.
A lot of the people that sell the $150+ ones actually are worth it. I built my first pc this way, $150 optiplex 9020 mt with a i5-4590, 16gb ram, 128gb ssd, 3tb hitachi ultrastar. All i did was put a 500w PSU in it and I upgraded to a Xeon E3-1271 V3, it was only like $60. they're much cheaper now. Sold the i5 for $50. I had a RX570 in it but upgraded to a RX6600xt. I've since built a new PC with a 6700xt and ryzen 5 5600 but the optiplex is still running. Also all the front sd/micro sd readers work, disk drive as well. By the way and fair warning, the RX6600xt is absolutely the maximum sized card you are getting in there without drilling out the HDD cage, which I tend to like because there is nowhere else to put your storage. Also you will need to make sure your sata cables are plugged in beforehand, as well as manipulating them and probably tying them together so they don't bump into the GPU fans. I had one annihilate one of the fans on my rx570 which I had to replace, which was a pain in the ass because MSI Armor card, but it still works after 5 years. Also that card was a tight fit, but the 6600xt is quite literally basically snug against the cage. Minimal bottleneck on my setup, I've put my 6600xt in my newer pc and there wasn't a crazy difference, 12-30fps margin, not too crazy because were talking 100+fps

I built a $160 budget pc for my friend 8-9 months ago with dell OptiPlex 9020 ($70), 16 gb 2666 MHz ram($30), i7 4770 (default CPU), a cheap SSD 256 gb (that I sold the original ram to buy) and the rx 560 4gb ($60) I wonder what you would change in my build choices. edit: the default hard drive with 500 gb too
I just ordered an i7 3770 to replace the i5 in my Optiplex 3010sff along with 16gb RAM I already installed a Nvidia GTX 1020 low profile graphics card. I plan on buying a better setup though kinda thinking I'm gonna get the the Optiplex 3020 like the one in the video. Curious if I should just hold off and put the i7 in the 3020 I plan on getting?
Man I love these kind of of repurposed builds and budget gaming PC's. I have like 6 older office PC's that I got for between $28 and and $110. So far I have upgraded an HPZ 230 and an HPZ 620 with SSD's, ram and GTX 1060 and GTX 770 and they have been great at getting me started into PC building and gaming for the first time ever. I'm in my 60's and on very limited budget and started tinkering with computers 3-4 years ago as a new hobby. These budget builds are right up my alley and I'm having a blast doing them. I try to make sure the machines have a somewhat adequate PSU or they can accept an ATX one with little modifications. My next steps will be to try custom painting and RGB lighting. Worth it to browse the second hand market for a name brand psu.
Scored a 650 watt modular Corsair for $50. Came with box and all the connectors

At least if the pc can't a specific game you do have the Steam deck to fall back on.I agree this method is a solid and cheap way to get into pc gaming on a budget since it was where I came from in my early pc gaming years.

It would be interesting to see someone review these Xeons to see which are best for gaming and applications where you need them to keep up with a modern GPU like Stable Diffusion work. You got a great Xeon, having a high base clock speed relative to the others. I'm sure there are some you can get that have close to 4 Ghz. speed.

this is a crazy pc for 200$, i'm really impressed.
I just recently got a Dell Precision T1650. It has the Xeon E3 1280 v2 with 8gb ddr3 ram, 2 500gb hdd and the Nvidia Quadra 2000 gpu and 265W psu. I ordered another 8gb of ram to bump it to 16gb and getting a RX550 gpu. Along with some adapters and a wifi stick im coming in at about $90 total. My plans are to do light gaming but more for music work.

1 updated my old 7010MT that has an i7-3770. Great little gaming machine for little $$$.
CPU: i7-3770
RAM: 4x4GB
GPU: MSI RX580 Gaming X 8GB (needed to take out the lower drive bays)
PSU: Corsair RM550x
ARGB Controller: COOLMOON
CPU Cooler: Jonsbo CR1400 ARGB (tower cooler with 92mm fan - keeps gamin temps less than 70C.
Jonsbo FR925 ARGB reaar exhaust fan
Arctic P14 PWM ARGB case fan (cut out a bunch metal case behind the front face plate to improve air flow)
2 CRJ 5 pin fan adapters to connect aftermarket fans (no fan errors).
Cheap 90 degree USB3 header adapter as the graphics card covers the header.
Cut the side panel to fit an acrylic window.
Rx 580 8gb is king of price to performance! Awesome build.
I've got an optiplex build as well, unfortunately it's a SFF 3020 so I had to use the GT 1030 GPU and it managed to get me through a fair few months while I was doing my custom PC which also has the GTX 1070 and you're right, it really holds up well even today

I saw these budget builds last year, just wanted to get back into gaming and play some old titles from my youth.
Got an optiplex 7010 sff with i5 3570 and an RX 550 for €120...
€55 spent on a 500gb SSD and more ram (16gb total).
The performance I got was a lot better than I hoped. I'm playing RDR2, Metro, Fallout 4 etc. with over 50fps average.
I get a kick out of using low cost devices that over perform...
My car was €450 about 4 years ago, still going.
I built a hifi from spare parts, use it more than my main multi thousand € hifi.
Just got an iiyama g2470hsu which has crazy spec for the price.
Hopefully I can build a cheap pc in a year or two that can play starfield;)

good office pc to upgrade is dell inspiron 3668 at $100 cause it comes with a 7th gen i5, 8-16gb ram and some come with ssd.
My secondary PC that I keep in case something with my main rig goes down is an i7 4770, 16GB DDR3 and an RX 480, with a 450w Corsair PSU. It's not high-end, but it's something I built out of spare parts, and I know it'll still handle what I want it to do in the case I have to part with my main PC for whatever reason. And if nothing else, it keeps these older parts out of a landfill.

I assumed you used your existing monitor, but for the scenario of a kid buying his first pc, you should probably have mentioned that cost. Its important to point out that with a system like that there's no point going overboard on a high res, high refresh rate monitor. Great video though. I did something like this about 10 years ago buying an old Xeon server from surplus for gaming and to host a minecraft server. It was great as a server but terrible for gaming.
That was me, I had a Dell inspiration rig with terrible specs and I had upgraded the ram to 16GB which did help.
That got me into PC gaming and now I'm rocking a 5700X, 32GBs, and 4070FE.

Good video. Dell make 'workstations; built to run 24/7 under stress. That's why they last and make a great second hand buy. They aren't pretty, but they are reliable. i'd choose that over some £1000 RGB loaded pile of junk off Amazon any day. Oh. always replace the CPU thermal paste though.. it;'s usually white dust after this long.
Regarding using such rigs until they break, i tend to use them as such. Because at least for me they become a well kept home and i hesitate to leave them. So if i where in your situation, that 200$ or 200€ in my case, PC would last me until it breaks.
In 2012 i got gifted a then relative new i5-2400 with an OEM GeForce (GT545 if i remember correctly) and 8 GByte of RAM on a Cuppertino 2 mainboard. Background was that a friend of mine who knew that i was struggling financially at that time got that from a contract where he had a client that bought a HP and wasn't happy with it, he made that client a new PC and the client told him to simply toss the then relative new one.
I over the years upgraded and used that machine until 2017 when i used the parts to make my parents a living room PC out of it because i got my hands on a better machine.
Currently i use a Steamdeck of all things as my desktop, wanted one anyway, then energy prices in Germany went trough the roof and seeing that the Deck only eats up to 15 watts for similar results as my former desktop, a Ryzen 5 1600 with a RX 580, that was a no-brainer. My whole setup with two DELL 24" LCDs, a small Nobsound amp and an external 6TB USB HDD eats around 25-30 watts when idle and 45-50 watts when kicked.
Installed Vanilla Arch because at that time i had to use the Valve Kernel as not everything was in Mainline yet and with Arch i simply could use Valves repositories.
My IDEs, VSCode and cLion, work just fine, as does stuff like FreeCAD and KiCAD. And all the games i want to play run fine enough for me.
I intend to use this setup until it isn't feasible anymore from a performance standpoint, and that will be a long way down the road. Maybe when the Steamdeck 2 comes around.

My most proud sub 200 build is a sff xeon 4 core 8 thread i got for 50 bucks, and i slapped an ssd and an open box RX 6400 in it

This is almost exactly like what I have. But I just used metal cutters and pried out the hdd cage 😂. Also, mine is a 990 DT with 16 gigs of dual channel ram (4x4 sticks), i7 2600, a 300 watt p3087f5 power supply, Asus Turbo GTX 1060 6 gig, and everything was free except the 87 or so total dollars spent for the gpu. I had a GTX 960 2gig Gigabyte Windforce in there before. (The ram speed is 1333 mhz. I want to upgrade it to a 3rd gen i7 and replace one stick to a 1600 mhz 4 gig module, but don't want to spend money 😅. Great video!

Nice. I have a gtx 1060 3gb. I got for free. Wish I had the 6gb I got a optiplex 7010. For $30 and just grabbed an $11 i5 2320. (I need to upgrade it) it kinda pegs out during gameplay. I got 3 4gb ram and an 8gb ram. I know you aren’t supposed to mix but I had a ts140 with 4x4 but one was pee which is server ram and my computer won’t accept it for some reason. I kinda wish I didn’t Brick it replacing the cpu. Because the lga1150 cpu socket seems to have more options than the lga 1155 but I may be mistaken. I didn’t know games will do better on less cores higher ghz than lower ghz more cores. But the ts140 had a dual core 3.5 ghz I 3 and it ran games better than the quad core i5 3.0/3.2 ghz. Oh well I’m gonna get the Xeon 1620 v2 or the i7 3770. You can find them on Walmart.com by private sellers for $20-$30 then I’ll go for a better gpu. I actually saw a gtx 1060 6gb for $50 on Facebook marketplace.

i play on a core 2 quad e8200 that bought for 1 eur! 15eur on 4gb more of ram, a 250gb ssd and a 20eur gt640. Play almost any game till 2017 and even new games not too complex are also playable. Now bough a hp elitedesk i74790 16gb ram and ssd250gb for 130eur! a 2nd hand rx580 and a new power supply. As soon as the cable adapter arrives from ebay (stupid hp specific connectors) i will have a perfectly modern gaming pc for 250eur...
Dell da-2 power brick can power a 1060 no problem. Used to do this with my hp sff with an i7 and propriety psu.
ive been considering making one for flip builds but idk. can make an am4 system for $50-$100 more and have way more upgrade paths and general longevity. this is however the best price to performance optiplex build ive seen, blows ztts outta the water.

@@JasonWitmerYT im actually contemplating making a techtube channel to show off my flipping adventures. my most recent build has a ryzen 1600 for $20 with a cooler, an rx570 for $30, 16gb ram for $30. tldr grand total of build was $260. yours graphically dominates because of the 1070, but mine is not nearly as dated hardware/ new quality. longevity is a big deal to me and we are now moving into the age of ddr5. not to mention the capability to upgrade all the way to a 5th gen ryzen
You should try the Dell T3500 x58 motherboard and upgrade it to a 6 core 12 threads xeon.Very budget friendy.
I love these builds and hate the people that shame them... my main PC is a Dell precision 5810 (got free from work), E5v3 2667 processor, 24 GB DDR 4, I upgraded the power supply to the Dell 625 watt, added a GTX 1070TI, an SSD with windows 11 pro, and wala! a decent gaming PC! all for well under $300! It plays everything well at 1080P high settings
Another t5810 owner here. Got it from a local refurbisher for around 200€(coverted from ron).
Mine has the e5 1620 v3, 16gb ddr4, 685w psu with dual 6 pin and an rx 470 8gb. Slapped in a 25€ 480gb kingston ssd and everything works fine so far

i honestly wouldn't mind using this computer at all. I'd get a new case for it and install a big cooler that hides most of the motherboard as I'm not really a fan of green motherboards lol

I used to agree with not splurging on a pc and just settling on a budget but then i got a budget and having to upgrade things every 1 - 2 years is super annoying id rather just build a 2k pc now and not worry about it much for the next 5-7 years when itll pretty much just need a graphics card
for around 150 pounds you can get 16gb 6 core Xeon if you go with IBM Think Centre psu is normally platinium 900 watt psu with two 8 pin connectors be warned you cannot replace the psu with an off the shelf model its bespoke to IBM but it can literally handle any graphics card you throw at it
Ive been using a lenovo ideapad for 5-6 years and just want to play games at 30-60 fps, couldn't even get 20 on tf2 and would crash trying to load into csgo, that garbage was 350$ and was a huge waste of money, glad im finally upgrading to an i5 6500 and a gtx 1050ti 16gb ddr4 ram with a 1tb ssd, was an amazing find for 200$

I've been pretty vocal online against the 80+ white PSU's, but not because I think someone should spend $100 on a PSU for one of these... more that they're lower quality than the PSU that came in the Optiplex. I've seen A LOT of 80+ white units release the magic smoke, especially the ThermalTake models. They're just built REALLY cheap. I suggest people spend about $10 more on a half decent 80+ bronze unit like the EVGA BR series, the Thermaltake Smart BM2 and sometimes the Corsair CX or CXm series.

Love your channel! If people can afford a better PSU, I totally agree with you. I just get annoyed by some know it alls in the comments who say some really dumb stuff like “I only use tier A power supplies” when it’s like a $100 gaming pc - this space is full of privileged elitists who don’t realize that most of the world might not have access to it or can’t afford it. But yeah, if you can afford it, it’s always better to grab something better for sure.

I started out with an office PC I found in a barn, and I've spent almost $600 on it. it's still a piece of crap because my RAM is incompatible and my PSU never showed up, but the i7-4790 and RTX 3050 did show up.

A lot of the people that sell the $150+ ones actually are worth it. I built my first pc this way, $150 optiplex 9020 mt with a i5-4590, 16gb ram, 128gb ssd, 3tb hitachi ultrastar. All i did was put a 500w PSU in it and I upgraded to a Xeon E3-1271 V3, it was only like $60. they're much cheaper now. Sold the i5 for $50. I had a RX570 in it but upgraded to a RX6600xt. I've since built a new PC with a 6700xt and ryzen 5 5600 but the optiplex is still running.
Also all the front sd/micro sd readers work, disk drive as well.
By the way and fair warning, the RX6600xt is absolutely the maximum sized card you are getting in there without drilling out the HDD cage, which I tend to like because there is nowhere else to put your storage. Also you will need to make sure your sata cables are plugged in beforehand, as well as manipulating them and probably tying them together so they don't bump into the GPU fans. I had one annihilate one of the fans on my rx570 which I had to replace, which was a pain in the ass because MSI Armor card, but it still works after 5 years. Also that card was a tight fit, but the 6600xt is quite literally basically snug against the cage.
Minimal bottleneck on my setup, I've put my 6600xt in my newer pc and there wasn't a crazy difference, 12-30fps margin, not too crazy because were talking 100+fps

I built a $160 budget pc for my friend 8-9 months ago with dell OptiPlex 9020 ($70), 16 gb 2666 MHz ram($30), i7 4770 (default CPU), a cheap SSD 256 gb (that I sold the original ram to buy) and the rx 560 4gb ($60) I wonder what you would change in my build choices. edit: the default hard drive with 500 gb too

I just ordered an i7 3770 to replace the i5 in my Optiplex 3010sff along with 16gb RAM I already installed a Nvidia GTX 1020 low profile graphics card. I plan on buying a better setup though kinda thinking I'm gonna get the the Optiplex 3020 like the one in the video. Curious if I should just hold off and put the i7 in the 3020 I plan on getting?

Man I love these kind of of repurposed builds and budget gaming PC's. I have like 6 older office PC's that I got for between $28 and and $110.
So far I have upgraded an HPZ 230 and an HPZ 620 with SSD's, ram and GTX 1060 and GTX 770 and they have been great at getting me started into PC building and gaming for the first time ever. I'm in my 60's and on very limited budget and started tinkering with computers 3-4 years ago as a new hobby. These budget builds are right up my alley and I'm having a blast doing them. I try to make sure the machines have a somewhat adequate PSU or they can accept an ATX one with little modifications. My next steps will be to try custom painting and RGB lighting.
