James Brown Ill put it to you this way. Jordan could literally slap the hand of the guy he was guarding (you could hear I) and nothing got called. They got such bullshit calls that gave them ridiculous amounts of extra foul shots and other advantages it was just beyond believable. All because the Bulls were big market and Jordan was the nba's biggest name... I watched this game live, I remember it well because we were excited to watch it and we skipped going to church that Sunday to stay home to enjoy it. Lol it was one of those I'm so happy we did moments too since he went off for 63 points. I was just disappointed they didn't win the game. This was the greatest era of basketball, I sure am happy I got to grow up watching it. From Dr J all the way up until Shaq retired was a blast. Today's league is still fun but it's missing some heart and soul.
To say that today's NBA is missing some soul, is an understatement. The league is completely player oriented, instead of team oriented. It's kind of a shame that star players switch teams so often. Instead of having a favorite team that you can be a die-hard fan of, for life, we are mostly relegated to simply rooting for our favorite players, regardless of what team they play on. (At least, that's what it has become, for me) Unfortunately, the NFL is moving that direction as well.
I remember watching this game on TV. At the time I told people to watch out for this guy Michael Jordan, We know what he became. Celtics threw their best at him, trying to guard him in this game. Greatness.
trha2222 Jordanhad plenty of game sjust like this early in his career when he shot the ball a million times. He put up 60 a bunch of times vs. boston, Cleveland, new York. They were prime targets for Jordan's onslaught. I should know as he cheated my team the cavs every fucking goddamn piece of shit year with his fouling and not getting called, travelling not called, and do no wrong on the court that waspassed down to his teammates who also got 100% of the fucking calls causing extreme foul shooting discrepancies (bulls getting double the fouls shots of opponents, how odd) and other forms of fixing that went unnoticed by the idiots watching. I saw it all...
Actually here because of great respect for Larry Bird. Bird stimulates my mind and motivates my character. Watching him makes me want to do everything I do better. Jordan just entertains me with his acrobatics. Bird makes me want to work. Jordan makes me want to play.
Guess all you do is watch Jordan's dunks and not his post work, of which is probably the best of any guard ever. Michael Jordan: “Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I led you to believe it was easy, When it wasn’t. Maybe I made you think my highlights started at the free throw line, And not in the gym. Maybe I made you think that every shot I took was a game winner. That my game was built on flash, and not fire. Maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength, That my pain was my motivation. Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a God given gift, And not something I worked for, Every single day of my life
@@thedude2264 Thanks, man. I had never read that before. There's a lot of truth there, and I've always been aware of his work ethic. But the fact that Jordan possesses more natural skills and athletic abilities than Bird is what makes the flash so obvious and expectant, and his work ethic less visible to the average Joe. Having natural skills and abilities myself, I understand. His statement proves my point. Bird surprises people with his skills. Jordan wows people, but their mind tells them, "Well, of course, he can do that; look at how athletic he is!" It really is too bad everyone argues who is "the greatest" instead of praising God for the skills and abilities He makes possible by His great creative power and wisdom if we work at something hard enough and long enough! Jordan is right, basketball is not a gift from God, his natural abilities are. He simply was attracted to basketball and invested work in that area. He could have been a great anything else if he had applied himself as much to it as he did basketball. However, basketball seems to be the perfect sport for Jordan's set of skills and abilities to flourish more naturally than other sports.

Everyone talks about the 63 points he scored in Game 2. Most people forget he scored 49 in Game 1. That's a 56-point average against what was arguably the greatest team of all time... There are no words. Also, I guess you were only allowed two free throws back then, regardless of where you were shooting the ball. Jordan should've been given three free throws when McHale fouled him at 15:58. If that had happened, Bulls would've won the game.
Hate to do this but I agree and MJ and everyone else who was fouled on a 3ball attempt should have gotten 3 free throws. However, KM never fouled MJ in this particular case. Replays showed that he didn't come close to MJ..
Yeah, only McHale didn't foul him. But back to the 56 point average, it means very little. It should be easy to understand, even for a Michael Jordan fan, the more one shoots, the more they are going to score. You think Larry Bird couldn't have scored 63 points? He absolutely could've and had he shot THAT many times, probably would've scored 75. But he cared more about getting his teammates involved.
Half those calls were "phantom fouls." One was for looking cockeyed at him. Before the game Jordan said one man can't beat the Celtics, then he goes out & tries it. Brilliant!
@@reneep9972 When your teammates are hall of famers in their prime it's alot easier. Jordan didn't have anybody on his team that can make a difference. And yet he almost beat them. Imagine if he had a prime pippen, a veteran rodman, a good supporting cast, and Phil coaching
13:04 - the only time you'll see Bird help an opponent get up off the floor. He had crazy respect for Jordan. On another subject, hilarious to listen to Tommy Heinsohn trying to remain unbiased on a national broadcast. Good stuff, except cutting out the final seconds showing the game's final result - a Celtics win.
what most impresses me is w/jordan's movement--he was so ahead of his time (i mean, he essentially paved "this" time) how he cuts to the basket is so modern compared to the old-school celtics approach. also amused how his teammates can only stand around in awe and feel sorry for poor george gervin on the bench at the end of his career.
I think thats an undersell. I mean people thought he would be good, but nobody was predicting he would be the best in the league let alone the GOAT....otherwise he doesnt fall to third overall. Like compare his hype to Lebron. Much more was expected of Lebron coming into the league.

He got those all through his career. No one could guard Jordan partly because being too close to him was an automatic call, specially when the game was on the line.
Oh and I completely agree with that. But lots of people think that it's literally EVERYTHING which is completely false. You put it the best right there when you said, "you don't have to be a great athlete to be a good basketball player but being a great athlete does make u a better basketball player". Agree 100%
James Brown Dr. J was the ABA. In 1976, The Doctor saved the NBA from losing basketball fans. In 1979, Magic and Bird saved the NBA. Jordan helped the NBA go international in the early 1990s..
It's a nice advantage to never having to worry about being outcoached. Having Phil Jackson is a great boost to a team. Lebron had to deal with Mike Brown for years. (Kobe just found out how much that sucks) Wade was healthy....that's a past tense now. I don't think he'll ever be the same again. The guy has gotten old fast.

In my opinion, Jordan is D-Wade, Lebron, and Kobe mixed into one player, actually those three each have a part of Jordan. Wades quickness at the beginning of his career as seen in the video above, Lebrons power and passing ability evident in the 90-91 season, and Kobe's jumper and dedication. Jordan appears to have divided his abilities and gave it to each of those players.
Excellent comment! I know I'm late with my reply, but you're right on the money! All three of those players clearly were fans of MJ's, and tried to emulate parts (in Kobe's case, all) of his game. I agree with you on which parts of Jordan's game, each of them possess.

This is THE quintessential game in the history of the NBA. Everybody knew who Michael Jordan was after this, and he needed it after missing most of his sophomore season with a broken foot after winning the Rookie of the Year award. Jordan's career was in balance, was he a one-season wonder? Couldn't stay on the floor? Then he went out and jammed 63 down the throats of one of the greatest NBA teams ever.
Yes I agree 60's and even 70's basketball was difficult to watch. 80's basketball was much more fun to watch because offenses evolved to a faster pace and defenses were stuck in 2nd gear. Fast breaks only work if defenses, especially the big men, don't get back, and that was the rule (i.e. not the exception) in the 80's.
Larry Bird on Michael Jordan's 45 points after Game 1: "He is not going to score 45 points on us again." Jordan scored 63 points on Game 2. Bird on Jordan's 63 point performance after Game 2: "Michael Jordan is the most exciting, awesome basketball player in the world. I think he is God disguised in basketball shoes."
@J Day Bird Is Better Than Magic But Magic Always Has A Better Team Mates. In College, Bird Took The Unknown Indiana State To NCAA Finals Against Finals Condenter Michigan State. @coffeeinthemorning Agreed and if Bird was black he would've been a FIVE straight MVP, 84, 85, 86, 87, and 88 and would widely be considered the greatest to ever live. But the anti-white bias and political correctness prevents the obvious truth. And THIS coming from a Hispanic gal.

Actually, he does. Pippen is arguably the greatest perimeter defender of all time. The guy was just nasty. He was also an underrated value on offense, too. He's probably the third best small forward ever. Was Jordan the GOAT? Sure. But he also had a beautifully-crafted set of role players at his disposal, from Grant to Kerr to Kukoc to Rodman & so on - not to mention Pippen.
That won't surprise me, the Goat first step was unstoppable during the handcheking era, which means it's even easier for him to get his defender. Then he can pull up for a 50% efficient mid-range if the defender commits or drive and dunk it over these sorry ass centers of today, which is going to be just easier since he would have a stretch big and spacing of today... Easy 37 ppg as a standard and some season he might average 45 or 50
@@anthonyhutchins2300 Look at Jordan dissect zone defenses in the Olympics and you'll see that few people can match his ability to split the seams in zones. He'd kill today's defenses.
Keep in mind it took a couple years for Pippen to be the force we remember him to be. Jordan led his young bulls team against tough teams that went on to win the title or play in the finals. Jordans team's were built from the ground up with jordan being the foundation, unlike James who left to play with already legit All stars an a finals Mvp an who both were considered some of the best at their respective positions. Jordans 1st ring was with Pippen an grant being his sidekicks.
Both Michael Jordan and Larry Bird were CLUTCH. They didn't put on poor performances in the finals like LeBron has or forget to show up in the 4th quarter. Even when their teams didn't make it all the way in the post season, those two performed like the legends they were. LeBron is finally coming around and learning how to shake the gitters off but it took him 10 years to achieve something that MJ and Bird were born with. He'll still never be as clutch as they were.

Lol, they were swept. Also, George Gervin, Orlando Woolridge, Charles Oakley, John Paxson, these are not bad players, he just wasn't good enough, Bird was better.
I get your point. Jazz in 98 were old, but so were the bulls. it was basically 2 older teams with their best players being pasted their primes playing against each other.. yes wade is aging an decline, however Id take a past his prime Dwayne Wade over most of the younger stars in the PLAYOFFS. Despite wade declining he is still a former finals MVP an he played well in Game 7. Even with Wade being 31 he is still a top 5 SG an although Bosh is a Dinosaur he is still a top 5-7 PF in the league.
And Bird, McHale, and Ainge all executives. Ainge coached too, pretty well for a little while. Lotta brains on that Celtics team. Part of why they were so amazing.

This never gets old.
(At least, that's what it has become, for me)
Unfortunately, the NFL is moving that direction as well.
I just realized how old your comment is...
But... your statement is even more accurate, than when you said it!
I remember watching this game on TV. At the time I told people to watch out for this guy Michael Jordan, We know what he became. Celtics threw their best at him, trying to guard him in this game. Greatness.
mj already looking like a candidate for 'greatest of all time' - and he just got better and better for the next 12 years. what an inspiration :)
trha2222 Jordanhad plenty of game sjust like this early in his career when he shot the ball a million times.
Michael Jordan:
“Maybe it’s my fault.
Maybe I led you to believe it was easy,
When it wasn’t.
Maybe I made you think my highlights started at the free throw line,
And not in the gym.
Maybe I made you think that every shot I took was a game winner.
That my game was built on flash, and not fire.
Maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength,
That my pain was my motivation.
Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a God given gift,
And not something I worked for,
Every single day of my life
@@thedude2264 Thanks, man.
Jordan wows people, but their mind tells them, "Well, of course, he can do that; look at how athletic he is!"
It really is too bad everyone argues who is "the greatest" instead of praising God for the skills and abilities He makes possible by His great creative power and wisdom if we work at something hard enough and long enough!
Interesting. Seeing as was way more than acrobatics but hey. I saw MJ get smarter and smarter and his killer instinct makes me want to be the best.

Amen!!! I am right there with you. It's my opinion that nothing, in the NBA today, comes close to this.
That quick first step that Jordan had combined with a super-human hang time on his jump shots and running floaters. Man, so amazing...

This is THE quintessential game in the history of the NBA. Yes I agree 60's and even 70's basketball was difficult to watch. 80's basketball was much more fun to watch because offenses evolved to a faster pace and defenses were stuck in 2nd gear. Jordan never won a playoff game against Bird. I'm not talking playoff series, I'm talking playoff GAME.
Good game fro both superstars
Scoring 63 points against the eventual world champions was a great feat, but bottom line is if you don't win, it means NOTHING!!
Parish said after the game he didn't care if MJ scores 80 pts as long as the Celts come away with the win.
jjs777fzr That's because he was a lazy old mule along for a ride and jealous of Michael's skills
That’s what ppl usually argue about championships as well , who cares if you average 27 7 7 if you can’t win championships
@@chrisbuck1695
Yeah , - a lazy ol ' mule anticipating Bird's wackadoo passes , right ?
Keith Clark well I hoped Robert parish enjoyed the 90’s because Jordan bitch slapped the entire league and the NBA was so much better talent wise in the 90s then the 80s. 80’s was like a 3 or 4 team league everyone else had no shot of winning.
Its crazy that no one ever talks about Jordan's game 1 where he had 49 !! I mean wow 112 points in 2 games in Boston against maybe the best team ever that's just unbelievable !
and still 0-6 against Bird..lol
@@orangeandblackattack name another player on the 86 bulls that would’ve helped Jordan, it’s a team sport, unfortunately that team was ass
Ya they lost it was Boston's plan let Micheal beat em lol he could not
@@sammoore5786 When Larry showed up to the Celtics they were a 29-win team, absolute trash, and as a rookie they won 61 games. Larry was the only addition to the team. Thats greatness. As a fuckin rookie.
@@daddyfuse50 wow, really? I hadn't heard that before. I only got to see Bird in the latter part of his career. My first NBA memory is of watching Bird and the Celtics. I could tell that he was the best player on the court, so he became my first favorite player.... Bird, and then Isaiah Thomas (myself being only 7, I absolutely loved that the smallest guy out there was such a beast)
I didn't actually see Jordan play, until a couple years later... As you could imagine, my favorite player instantly changed after that. MJ really was a spectacle to witness. He never failed to impress.
Really great memories
That was a great game, This younger Jordan reminds me of Steph Curry, but man, it's scary watching Bird with the ball, people forget he can practically score at will from anywhere!
The ending of this vid sucked. No transition at all. I didn't even realize I was that into the game I was watching till that stupid ending cut the game off.
Nicholas Riveness lol
Nicholas, Yeah, the ending really sucked. What the hell?
Instead of bitching and moaning, how about be grateful for the vid as is? Nope can't do that!
Jus goolge or stream an watch the Whole game is that too do lol j plyin lol
@@thehealthychefri No reason to be "grateful" for anything "as is". It either rocks or it sucks. This sucked.
The greatest of all time!
They were all great
Bird said that MJ played like god, and Jordan was only at the beginning of his greatness. In the coming years, Jordan improved almost every aspect of his game. Bird was and still one of the greatest ever and I also comment that he is one of the smartest players ever. If he said Jordan is so great, he knew what he was talking about.
He knew how too build a persons pride n ego ! As long as Bird played.....MJ can only be #2 !
Brian wrong
That was a good game
Bird Parrish McHale Walton. Those three guys combined to average about ninety a game in their careers and won four MVP's, two sixth man of the year awards, and a dozen titles. If it had been anything other than a sweep I would have said they were slacking. MJ still scored 63 on them though.
Please Upload The Game 3 Of This Play Off !?
To Show How The Boston Kick Out The Chicago Out Of The Play Off At Their Own Home Court.
Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time, no debate.
Sorry, I know reply is 6 yrs old .. but come on man .. really...
I don’t agree...
I traditionally am old school and say ya gotta with the centers first ( Mr Russel, Kareem and Wilt Chamberlain)... there was basketball before your guy...and it was really good...
@@andrewtpayne8502 you’re absolutely right
@@andrewtpayne8502
I vote Larry Legend myself. Being tall isn’t everything.
despite the things people say about bad defense and everything, most players couldn't make the shots Jordan makes if they were unguarded. He's incredible
For those ragging on Jordan scoring 63 and losing, Celtics were the best record in the NBA that year, this was the 1st round 1-8 series. Celtics went on to win the NBA Chmapionship that year.
