I am a teacher, I teach physics .
I love teaching physics.
I feel lucky to teach physics .
There's nothing else I 'd rather do.
I'm glad you love what you do. I'm certain your students appreciate your passion!
Good teacher
I'm good student because you're great teacher :)
Thank you for watching my lesson, Benjamin.
Good Job Sister !
Thank you.
Hello, Jennifer. Thank you for this very useful lesson. It is easy to see that you love what you do because you are an excellent teacher. I work as a private driver. I wish you all the best! Bye!
Hi Júlio. I bet you have a wonderful connection with your client(s) -- professional and friendly. :) Thanks for the good wishes. Take care.
I've got really bad toothache. You ( need_ should ) go to the dentist. My answer is need .
That ( can't_won't) be Julia . She is in London at the moment. My answer is can't
We ( must _might ) go to France next month . We just have to wait and see if we will manage to save money. My answer is might .
Are my answers correct?
Advice: You should go.
Urgent advice/instruction: You need to go.
That can't be Julia. (It's impossible.)
We might go. (It's possible, but not definite.)
We must go. (It's necessary. Doesn't sound logical here.)
The text says : For the last 200 years people have been using fossil fuels.
1. People have been using fossil fuels for more than 200 years . ( true _ false )
Answer key says it is true.
I think it should be false because it is more than 200 years . What is the correct answer ?Why ?
I think the better interpretation would be that people have been using fossil fuels for at least 200 years. OR People started using fossil fuels 200 years ago.
I agree that the wording is confusing. "For the last 200 years" is a period that started in the past two hundred years ago and it continues till now."
A waiter was bringing empty plates back into the kitchen .
Is it correct to use " bringing " here ?
A waiter was carrying empty plates back into the kitchen.
Is it correct to say " carrying " here ? Thanks
Yes, either works. BRINGING is about movement from one place to another, from the dining area to the kitchen.
CARRYING is about holding them in one's hands. Both make sense.
I am grateful to you . The streets of Tokyo are busy . But just around the corner you can find peaceful and quiet places .
I don't understand the phrase " just around the corner " what does it mean ?
Just around the corner = not far away
We (had_ were having ) a wonderful holiday last year. As it ( would be _was ) our last year at school we ( agreed _ had agreed ) earlier on in the year that we (were going _would go ) somewhere together . Which options are correct ? Thanks in advance .
We had... (a completed action in the past)
As it would be... (future in a past context)
US English allows for "we agreed/we had agreed" as long as the sequence is clear, which it is.
We would go (again, future in the past).
Please see my playlist on verb tenses for a full review. :)
As they left / were leaving they noticed that the shop was surrounded by the police . Which one is correct? left / were leaving ? Thanks
I'd use the progressive. As the action was in progress, they noticed something.
The council is ( going along with _ running out of ) space for new houses . Why is it wrong to use going along with here ? I have understood here that the council is agreeing on space for building houses .
You can go along with an idea, a proposal, etc. You can't go along with "space." You'd have to write something like this: The council is going along with the proposal to build houses (in that space.) If someone is running out of space, then there's no room to build. That makes sense.
The majority or A majority of people decorate their house from the inside .Which one is correct A or The ???????
"The majority of people" >> www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/majority
How to ask people what their actual job responsibilities are after knowing the name of their job position?
So what exactly do you do?
What kinds of things are you responsible for?
What's a typical work day like?
So, you're the person people call when they...? What exactly are you responsible for?
- -These are fine for conversation.
I shouted as much as I ( could _ managed to ) which one is correct? Why? Thanks .
We use CAN and COULD to express ability. They are often used in the comparative structure: as much as (I can/ you can/ he could/ we could).
How much do you earn? :)
Not as much as I'd like, but enough to continue my work. :) Thankfully, other rewards are plentiful.
Hi Jennifer 🌹I'm English language teacher and I want to be like you🌹
I read a novel but I didn't know some words .It says : Scorpion poison seems to heal . Without warning_pouf.Sometimes there is a blind eye or a broken leg . What does "pouf " mean ? I didn't understand the rest of the sentence. Does it have a hidden meaning ?
I think you likely saw "Poof!" or some variation. It's an interjection we use to say something magically appeared or disappeared (or seemed to have happened that way).
@@Englishwithjennifer I am grateful for answering. It is written pouf. I got tired of searching on the net .
The chef was taking food out of the kitchen . Is it correct to use " taking " here ?
That's fine. "Carrying" also makes sense.
have taught ESL/EFL for years..... I like this video a LOT: good, realistic questions.... you give a sense of register (types of questions), and I really like that you demonstrate how we say things quickly..... and the cultural notes are good, too!
I truly appreciate the positive feedback, Paul. It means a lot to have the support of my peers. Thank you and happy teaching! :)
Keep up the good work!
HI, EXCELLENT , BUT WHAT IF PEOPLE DON'T REALLY ENJOY THEIR WORK? HOW CAN THEY ANSWER POLITELY? FOR THAT DOESN´T SOUND RUDE?
You can always tell part of the truth:
How do you like your job?
- It's okay. It's not my dream job, but it pays the bills.
- It's all right. I hope to move on to something else in the future, but for now, I'm okay there.
You just wouldn't speak so openly to someone in the company, especially your boss! You have to decide how honest you can be. How close are you to this person? Do you trust them to understand?
@@Englishwithjennifer thank you so much for the tip
Can we say "miss a taxi " ?? Why ? Why not ?? Thanks in advance
Hmm. Yes, I guess. I you called for a taxi and then stepped outside too late to meet it. Then >> I missed my taxi.
Making questions has many details .
Ali: where do your cousins live ?
They live in London
Ali : .1........................?
They have a house with a garden.
can we say in number 1 : what do they have ?
Maybe: What does their house look like? What kind of house do they have? Do they have a big house?
Neutral people ask me what do I work as and I reply ‘nothing much’ even though I do work
It's always up to you how much you wish to share. They should understand if you're open to sharing more. Thanks for watching the video.
Hello you are a great teacher . I have a question. Extended families give support to all ...... members.
Here we have a missing word question. Is it correct to put " of " ?
Please I am curious
I need a grammar reference.
Hi. "All" can be used by itself before a noun or with "of":
1. all members
2. all of the members
Since you're making a general statement about any and all families, it's better not to use "the" because that would make the group specific.
"All of" is more commonly use before pronouns: all of us, all of them, all of that, etc.
Here's a good explanation: dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/all
@@Englishwithjennifer I have understood that saying " all of students" is wrong because we don't have " the " We must say all of the student . Am I right ?
Yes. You can say "all of" + pronoun OR "all of the" + noun.
All of us, all of them, all of that.
All of the students. All of the members.
You can all use "all" + noun: all students, all members (general references).
You are an excellent teacher .
1_What do you work for ?
2_ Who do you work for ?
3_ Where do you work ?
Answer : I work for a news agency.
Which question works for this answer ???
Thanks in advance
Most likely exchange:
What do you do? - I'm a journalist. I research news stories.
Where you you work? - I work for a small news agency.
Oh which one? - A local TV station in my city.
Thanks for ur videos! could u make a video speaking us about the american cuture?,thanks much If u can!

Ahmed : How long was the Sahara desert covered with plants ?
Or
When was the Sahara desert covered with plants?
Maher : 400 years ago .
Which question is correct?
If the answer is "400 years ago," I'd ask:
When was the Sahara desert covered with plants?
Or possibly:
How long ago was the Sahara desert covered with plants?
You are a real teacher! Everyone should love their professions just like you.
Your videos are very good and efficient because they are made with love.
Thank You! God bless you.
I do try to put some love in every lesson. Thank you, Marcos. :)
I love my job!
That's wonderful!
After watching your videos, I not only improve my language but also become relaxed.
That's wonderful to hear. Kind wishes to you!
They have once made my father pay money
for carrying more than he is allowed.
Is this sentence correct grammatically?
Thanks in advance
It makes sense, but the present perfect isn't logical. The simple past is better for an event that happened once: They once made...
What is the difference between the two sentences?
Before I arrived she had left .
By the time I arrived she had left .
Thanks in advance . I have a question. Can we use past perfect here ???
I ( live )......... in London for ten years .
I had lived in London for ten years .
It is a question in a test .
Well, I hope the test was already taken and graded if you're asking. ;)
The present perfect is for actions that began in the past and continue until now. If you're still living in London, use the present perfect.
The past perfect is for actions that began at a past point in time and continued up to a second (later) point in the past. The past perfect is only needed if we want to clarify the sequence of past events. You often need more context for it to make sense:
I came to the U.S. in 2015. Before that, I had lived in London for ten years. (Most Americans would just use the simple past, though.)
Hey, what the answers of this questions; "what are you? and who are you?
What' are you? >> Needs more context to make sense.
For example, if you're talking about the horoscope, I may be asking about your sign.
What are you? >> Libra.
Who are you? >> Clear, but often too direct for polite conversation.
Who are you? >> I'm Jennifer, and online teacher.
I'm a native English speaker but I still love to watch your videos! Your voice is so relaxing too! As someone who studies many languages, I often use your tips and adjust it so I can apply it to my target language. Very helpful!
That's great feedback, Joe. Although I've done formal teacher training, I think the best way to help others is simply to provide a model. Hopefully, most of the time it's a good one, but even I can watch a lesson of mine and think about how to improve it. :) Observation and reflection are good for all of us. Take care and happy teaching!
you make me so happy , your way is so easy and funny
thank you
I'm happy you enjoy studying with me.
Thanks for answering my question sometimes they say I am having a bad day . is "have " an action verb here ?
That use is common. It explains that usually you don't, so this is a temporary situation.
Example: I'm usually good at math, but I'm having trouble with this one problem. Can you help me?
thank you jennifer, Egypt
You're welcome. Kind regards!
Thanks for helping me .
I also learned that the time it takes us to arrive to a place
depends on the distance. Our flight was three hours long.
Is there a grammar mistake here?
Yes, you can cay that. Have a good day!
@@Englishwithjennifer Thanks for you. Can we say .......arrive to a place ..............?
Is using to after arrive correct ?
very well , I been here for a long time. I continue following you, in Chile, thank you
I'm happy you're studying with me. Kind wishes to you!
You have very interesting and clever way in teaching English. Thanks.
You're very welcome. I'm glad you liked this lesson. :)
Throughout history people have moved from one country to another. Some
of these migrants (1) (chose / have chosen) to emigrate, while others (2) (had / have had to)
move because of wars or natural disasters or for economic reasons. Here are some
facts and figures.
During the period 1970-2000, the number of migrants in the world rose
from 82 million to 175 million.
You are a great teacher. I want to thank you for being patient . I want to ask you about Number 1 and 2 . I know the answers ( chose _ had to ) .
Why do we have to use the simple past here ?
Looking at dates, I see they're all in the past, so the simple past makes sense. But "throughout history" suggests from the past up to now, so one could argue for the present perfect.
It was useful and interesting 👍
I'm happy to hear that.
They weren't home. They weren't at home . Are both grammatically correct ???Thanks in advance
You'll hear both. "Home" can be an adverb. Most Americans would omit "at."
What you have devoted your life to........... most of your life .
A_ have have had
B_ having has has
C_ having has had
D_ have had had
E_ A and C
Which one is correct?
I'm not sure any of the answer choices sound natural to my ears. I might: What have you devoted most of your life to?
Asking people what they do for a living is the sign you come from a place with strong economic troubles or anxieties. USA is one such place.
I suppose we can all interpret the reasons for asking a question differently. In the U.S., asking people what they do is a common way to get to know the person. We'd like to know how people identify themselves, what skills they have, what they dedicate their time to, and what areas of interest they might have. Knowing what job someone has gives us things to talk about. In the U.S., the question is often a friendly one, and many enjoy talking about their professional and personal interests. It's important to understand these aspects of our culture.
Thanks for all your efforts . When a teacher writes a question in the exam : " List the goals of business " Does he want the explanations of these goals or just headlines without explanations ? List is not clear for me
If it's an exam, I imagine the teacher would have communicated the format beforehand. Is an essay expected, for example? But by definition, a list is only a set of items. It's not a text with complete information.
@@Englishwithjennifer Thanks . No it isn't an essay .
Then I suppose you need to structure the text as an itemized list, but provide sufficient details.
Nice smile❤️
Thanks! 😊
How do you ask somebody's name? Doesn't "what's your name?" sound impolite?
No. That's fine. "What's your name?" is a common question. However, you can't just walk up to someone and demand an answer. In the context of a friendly introduction, it's fine. In truth, we'd likely just state our own name first and then offer a handshake. The other person would be impolite not to respond.
Hi. I'm Jennifer.
Hi, Jennifer. Nice to meet you. I'm Muhammad.
I'm Jennifer, by the way.
I'm Muhammad. It's good to meet you, Jennifer.
You too.
Hello, Jennifer. Here is your oldest student, since the yard sale. Remember? Thanks.
Always good to see you back on my channel. Learning is an ongoing process, right? :)
You're absolutely right as usual.
What must we write in the blank ?
Ali : Where were the first newspapers ?
Maher : In Germany
Ali ...................................?
Maher : Newspapers were very expensive.
It's about money, right? Hint: use the verb "cost."
Now choose a question word. What question word helps us ask about an amount?
>> Who? What? Which? When? Why? How much? How many?
Think about the time frame: past tense.
He performed (across _in) the Middle East .Are both answers correct? If so what is the difference?
ACROSS = traveling to different regions/countries
IN = perhaps only in one place, one country, etc.
Good morning
They make land to farmers .
I know the answer is for farmers .
Is it correct to say " to farmers " ?
Hi! I'm not sure I understand the meaning of "make land." Did someone give the farmers land? You can say they gave land to farmers or the farmers received land.
Hi,
I'm jobless for four years , I quit because of illness.
Best wishes 🍀
Thanks for your great efforts.
Hello. I'm so sorry about your illness. I wish you better health and the chance to do the activities you want to do. You can also say:
I haven't been employed for four years.
I've been out of work for four years. (This sounds like you can't find a job.)
I had to quit my job four years ago.
Thanks for trying to cheer me UP . After I had visited a doctor , I started getting better.
It was not my fault to lose my job because I started hearing voices in my head and also outside such as at Home in the street and suddenly I became angry and got irritated easily and I couldn't control myself I don't know the reason why I became behaving like this until I visited a doctor specialised in psychiatre who described me some medicaments against this sickness. I don't know how it is called in English " the person who Can hear voices in head and outside and I Can smell odor although there is no one beside me spreading this odor.
Please , pray to God for helping me find another job sooner.
Thanks a lot Mrs Jennifer for your observations
Best wishes 🍀
Sending warm thoughts and wishes your way! Take care.
Thank you very much.
God bless you
Is it correct to say I need go to the dentist? Need here is an auxiliary verb so we don't use to . Thanks
NEED + (to go, to do, to see, etc.)
In American English, we use NEED with an infinitive.
I am a teacher, I teach physics .
I love teaching physics.
I feel lucky to teach physics .

Ali: ...........................?
Maher : I visit my parents on Fridays .
Can we ask in this way ???
How often do you visit them ?
Or
When do you visit them ?

Both are correct.
When do you visit them? (tell me the days and/or times)
How often do you visit them? (how frequently?)
I am thankful to you . Can we say I am having a headache .Why ? Why not ?
HAVE is a state. We usually don't use non-action verbs in progressive forms. There are exceptions, of course.
I have a headache.
I have a test tomorrow.
I have an iPhone.
>> Exceptions:
I'm having a few friends over for dinner this evening.
Their baby is due in October. They're having a girl.
u speak too slowly ;-;
can u speak a little more fast plz?
Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. I try to strike a balance, keeping in mind the range of viewers I have. I like to keep my speech clear and provide a bridge to the faster speech learners will hear in film, in the news, and in conversation. Kind regards!
I am grateful for answering my questions.
I am hot . I ( haven't had _ haven't been having ) a cold drink since breakfast .
The answer is "haven't had " Why ????????
Hi Hanna. "Had" here refers to a completed action. Either you had a drink or you didn't:
I haven't had a cold drink since breakfast.
"Drink" can refer to a process, so if we want to talk about an action in progress, we could say,
"I haven't been drinking a lot water today, so I feel dehydrated."
Thanks for you Ali : ........... ..............?
Maher : I go to the club every Friday
Can we say : When do you go to the club ?
That's fine.
Hello Jennifer. What are you ask about that guy he is a English teacher then could you explain the querstion, please ?
Hi Marcelo. Sometimes saying, "I'm an English teacher" creates the impression that we teach English literature to elementary or high school students. So for clarification, I asked, "English literature?" (Do you teach English literature?) Jason replied, "No, English as a second language."
Perfect !! Thank you
Little boring at times. Maybe a little bit more dynamic
All feedback is welcome. Thanks, Joe.
I have an exam question.
Newspapers contain too many adverts . (Start with I wish ........... )
I wish newspapers didn't contain so many adverts .
Can we also say I wish newspapers wouldn't contain so many adverts . ? If not why ? Thanks .
Correct: I wish + (simple past) >> for wish about the present
I wish newspapers didn't contain....
Speaking about a hypothetical future, I'd argue that use of "wouldn't" is okay for actions, not states. >> I wish they wouldn't publish so many advertisements. I wish they would stop filling up the pages with ads.
Remember we use this structure for things that both us: dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/wish
Hello Jen! Former classroom teacher...Why U don't teach in classroom anymore. U said we could ask :D
I'm a lawyer and I work in a Federal Court of law (human rights) so when people ask me, they get very curious, so they ask me a lot of questions about it. And for me is very dificult to explain cuz I don't know the legal words in english and also cuz the legal system for US and Mex is very different, so they really don't understand why I do :'(
I left the traditional classroom to have an online career. :) I work from home, and that allows me to take care of my two children.
I'm sure there's a lot of resources for legal English: www.learnersdictionary.com/3000-words/topic/legal-english
You are one very smart person. It takes a sharp mind to have a strong grasp of the law and be familiar with a long history of important cases.
u r so perfect & I really hope 2 b like u one day as an English teacher
Hi. Have you worked with my 20-day Fast Speech challenge? I wish I could work with movies, but they're copyrighted. I have some study tips on my website. Work with the captions/subtitles to catch words you aren't hearing, but also turn them off again and test your comprehension. I cover many idioms on my English Vocabulary playlist.
My question is : How much do you make for uploading videos?.. Sorry for my question. But you said that we can ask you whatever we want. hehehehe it's a joke. I don't care about it!! What matter most is how much dedication you put in teaching and passion you put in. I'm so grateful to you, Jennifer. I wish I met you some day. Regards from Machu Picchu

Hi, Jen. This video is helpful for me. And I have a small question: "I like listening to music" or "I like listening to musics", what sentence is true ? thanks...
Hello. "Music" is an uncountable noun. There isn't a plural form. Just say, "I like listening to music" or "I like music."
Hi. I am a chinese student .Your video is so amazing .you help me a lot
I like the course Learn English with jennifer :lessons for beginners very much .I have a question . If this course will be up dated.
Thanks for the great effort you do.
Hello. I'm glad this lesson helped you. I really wanted to make more videos with Natasha, but she moved away. She lives quite far from me, so it's not so easy to make lessons. I've been making some low intermediate lessons with my children. Look for the Kid to Kid English videos. :)
Good lesson! More video with Jennifer, less phrases on black background, that's just what I like :) thank you
Thanks for the feedback, Vasiliy.
I am grateful for explaining many things. Unable to stop doing something is a definition of (hooked or addicted) ??
a continuous feeling of worry that prevents you from relaxing is a definition of ( anxiety or stress) ??
Yes. "Hooked" is informal for "addicted." They both mean one cannot stop doing something or using something.
"Anxiety" and "stress" are similar. "Anxiety" can be more closely related to fear.
You are wonderful . I want to ask about languages . Can we say : What do you speak ? What do people speak in China ? What languages do you speak?
Which questions are correct ? Do we have to say what languages? Or just What ?
this video worth , thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it!
Many of the historical sites ( could_ might ) not be saved when workers were building the dam . Which one is correct ? Why ? Thanks in advance
might not >> future possibility
could not >> past possibility/ability
Only "could" is possible.
@@Englishwithjennifer Thanks a lot . Here in the sentence .......could not be saved ....... "could" expresses disability not possibility because if it were possibility it should have been written : could not have been saved . Am I right ?
Ability and possibility can overlap. We could write:
It wasn't possible to save those sites.
They weren't able to save those sites.
>> It's basically the same thing. Right?
The perfect modal is better for speculating about past possibilities:
Did David commit the crime?
No, he couldn't have done it because he was out of the country. It must have been someone else.
I am grateful to you for answering my questions .
I ( not eat ) Indian food before but I really enjoyed it .
I know the answer is hadn't eaten .
Can we also write "didn't eat " ?
I am curious ......
Hi. In casual conversation, Americans may very likely say, "I never tried Indian food before, but I really enjoyed it." I think "didn't try" might be chosen by some speakers, but it's far less common and doesn't sound as natural. If this were a grammar test, only one answer would be acceptable: hadn't eaten/had not eaten/ had never eaten (past perfect).
Hi , maybe I'm a bit late to follow you... But I found your channel is wonderful. Do you teach live and interactive lessons?
Hello Ali. It's never too late. I'm happy you found my channel. Here's a link to a page with all my playlists. englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/ I do offer live and self-paced instruction. When they were firing / fired their guns into the air the alarm clock went off / was going off . Which ones are correct? Thanks
It's all a matter of perspective. Do you want to focus on an action in progress or a completed action? Use of the simple past in both clauses would show sequential actions.
Thanks for setting me straight, Jennifer.)
Thanks for watching. :)
Jennier is the best. She speaks so softly, but I don't like when she speaks fast.
Muito bom!
Brasil.
When I go fast, try your best. Then watch again with the captions. Finally, watch a third time without the captions and see if you can follow. :)
I want to thank you a lot for answering my questions . Tram is a kind of bus . why didn't we put a before bus it is here countable ? I know that it is only uncountable in this expression by bus .
Good question. When you talk in general about the means of transportation, we use uncountable meaning, so no article is needed:
go by bus, by car, by train, by trolley, by tram, etc.
COMPARE: I got on the bus./ He bought a new car./ A trolley is coming. Is that ours?
I have a question which is not related to this issue. (have you had _have you been having )
a busy morning?
which tense is correct and why ?
HAVE is a state. We usually avoid the progressive with non-action verbs: Have you had a busy morning?Has it been busy this morning?
it is very useful video indeed
Thank you.
Thanks for answering my questions."What do you work ? " is completely wrong . I think because "work" is an intransitive verb . or because it doesn't sound English.
Yes, you're right. If we want to use "work" as a noun, we could ask, "What kind of work do you do?" or "What line of work are you in?" But "What do you do?" is by far the most common variation.
Thanks. You make it simple.
I'm happy to hear that.
Thanks a lot . You mean How much did newspapers cost ?
Can we say
What were newspapers like ?
Correct:
How much did newspapers cost?
What were newspapers like (back then)?
I watch your video 1 year already
Thank you for choosing to study with me.

Thanks for all your efforts. Is it correct to say: I am writing homework ? Why ? Why not ?
It's understood, but not natural. It's all about using common phrases, or what we call collocations.
do homework
do laundry
do yoga
do a good job
make a sandwich
make my bed
make a mistake
write a check
write your name
write an email
So it's better to say, "I'm doing my homework."
Can we answer “I teach” to the question What do you do? Or i should use “I’m a teacher”?
It's more natural to respond, "I'm a teacher."
Then if the listener wants more information, they can ask, "What do you teach?" >> I teach math.
You can also be more specific from the start:
I'm a math teacher.
I'm a science teacher.
I'm a high school Spanish teacher.
good afternnon from Brazil!!
thanks very much teacher!!
You're welcome, Wagner. :) Warm wishes from Massachusetts, U.S.A.!

In almost any job, there's something to like. As you wrote, you may have to look a little harder. ;) Ideally, you find a job that suits both your skills and your personality. Hopefully, you work with good people. That certainly helps!
You have a wonderful way of teaching and explaining information , you are so precise. Thank you so much.
