    Hi everyone! I wanted to add on to one of my husband's tips for success in an English-speaking country. He emphasized the importance of spending time with native speakers. I'd say that what's key is exposure and immersion. You can still have exposure to the language on your own through films, social media, songs, etc. You can also spend time in the company of other non-native speakers who are comfortable speaking English and/or whose first language is not the same as yours. My advice is to open yourself up to opportunities to practice your English.
    Some of you may also have questions about the salary of an entry-level job in the U.S. Keep in mind that gross earnings are always higher than what you actually receive. After taxes and other deductions, your paycheck can seem much smaller! The cost of living can also be high when you factor in mandatory car insurance, utilities, co-payments at doctors' offices, and other common expenses. Starting out isn't easy, but with determination and patience, you can learn to make a decent living.

    Thank you Jennifer for sharing a very inspiring lesson.Your husband is a laborious person. He had never given up when he was going through financial hardship. We should not go after money, just keep working good job, ultimately one day we will succeed. This shows success does not come overnight without hard work.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  6 лет назад

      Well, money was certainly a source of motivation for him, but there were other goals he set out to attain, like proficiency in the language. Yes, I agree with the conclusion here: success doesn't come overnight.

    Hi Jennifer, this is a great video from many different perspectives! First, it's like listening to you and your husband's life story from the bottom of your heart which is quite touching and inspiring. I have to say that my eyes were watering a lot. :) Being the head of household, he definitely did his best. He's got my respect. His career path alone was quite amazing which tells us there is no shortcuts to your dream job or to any other ultimate goals in your life. His English learning experience can definitely set him as a role model for us learners here. As for myself, I will try to talk at a slower pace when we meet through Skype in the future. ;) Hopefully I will keep doing this in my daily life. Many thanks to you and your husband for the great effort you guys put into this video. Best wishes, Rachel

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  6 лет назад

      Hi Rachel. Each person will create his/her own path. I should have also clarified that success is defined by each individual. It doesn't necessarily have to tie into financial compensation, right? Still, I wanted his story to emphasize that that whatever path you choose, it's not going to be easy. As for the language, you're doing wonderfully. Keep your goals in sight and we'll work together towards them. :)

    It’s not easy for a middle class family to make both ends meet these days. Only people having strong determination can survive the difficult situations. We shouldn’t give up hope at any cost. Let’s hope that new opportunities will be opened and a bright future is waiting for us. Congratulations for sharing your true (success) story. Hello Jeniifer,
    Putting food on the table every day isn't an easy task even when you live in your homeland. I could imagine how difficult it would be living in a foreign country.
    As you've said, success mostly depends on being patient and persevering. You know that on the way there'll be highs and lows, but with a positive attitude you'll probably achieve your goals.
    When your husband makes mention of taking the language to the next level I'm sure he got it well. I mean, he was learnt by a superb teacher!
    Very interesting interview with lots of content and useful expressions.
    Thanks to you and your husband for taking the time to do it.

      Small corrections: Better to say, "I'm sure he did it well" or "I'm sure he succeeded." Then you can say, "He was taught by a superb teacher."
      Take care.

      Good question. You usually ace tests, exams, and interviews. We don't usually say ACE + (ing) as in "ace doing something."

      I can't tell you how many nights we ate hot dogs or cheap fish with rice in Moscow. Lunch was often a small roll of bread. I think it's good for people to experience hard times. Then you can really appreciate luxuries when you can finally afford them. I take pleasure in driving a nice car now, but I still remember the first car we owned together. It was close to 13 years old. We kept trying to repair it, but then we finally had to let it go. I wish you strength, good health, and much success!

This is a dream that I keep burning into my heart, because my real intention is to create a huge family ordained by God in Jesus Christ. Every job market has its challenges. No one should come to the U.S. thinking it's easy to build a life and make lots of money, but if you're realistic about your goals and you're willing to put in the hours (days, years) to achieve those goals, then success is attainable. I know a good number of people who've successfully settled in the U.S. I think for non-native and native speakers alike, we all have to be careful how we define success. As for me, I've had to redefine it a few times! LOL

    • @rolandflabber5497
      @rolandflabber5497 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment Jennifer. My case was different from your's huby. I escaped from the communist block with my family, two children age 9 and 10. No English at all! I have technical UNI degree. I'm not living in the USA. Jobs were plenty only payment was very low and hatred top of the roof. America betrayed us won the gold war, the next will be very hot and they will loose it. G'd is rightenous !

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  6 лет назад

      You were very brave to make that move. Indeed, jobs can almost always be found, but it's a matter of how much you need to earn to make ends meet. I'm sorry you faced such adversity.
      As for the future, I have hope based on past and present experiences. One of the toasts made at our wedding in Russia was about how the Cold War was between politicians, not people. Our guests were a mix of Russians and Americans, and for a day they shared food, dance and laughter. Peace is certainly possible. Let's hope the politicians manage to preserve it. Kind wishes to you, Roland!

      I decided not to name him for now. :) I worried that he might be disturbed on LinkedIn, etc. Though he likely wouldn't mind too much. Yes, he's Russian. When we first met, his English sounded more British than American. We really didn't speak much English for the first 5-6 years of our marriage. Once he started working in an English-only office environment and he had to speak to people every day, then he began to make serious progress. In terms of pronunciation, he speaks very clearly. The reoccurring mistakes I hear are usually with word stress, but he did very well in this interview. :)
