I admit part of why I purchase luxury bags IS because I know I could sell it if I didn’t want it anymore, but if it gets a little worn and I don’t make as much money on it when I sell then it is what it is. I’m not going to be afraid to use my bags over fear that a scratch is going to lose me a few hundred dollars, because then what’s the point of even owning it?

When I was young and didn't have any bags, I always wanted to buy everything. Now that I have everything, I wanted nothing. It's kind of funny how my mind changes over the time. My Chanel and Hermes bags are least often used bag. I always go out with Loewe or some more causal bags from Marni. At some point in life, when we acquired all we wanted, then we realize the happiness is within ourselves at any place or time regardless of what we carry.

True. But we also derive a lot of satisfaction from being able to style and curate a look. That's creative self expression, and it's no accident that the ones you're most comfortable with are a bit more edgy and less stuffy as a look. You have the satisfaction of achievement in life.
This is especially important as we get older. I feel justified in my wariness, sustained over time, of the ultra expensive brands like Hermès or Chanel as I don't think I would get the value out of them.

I so agree. Have the very same experience. Having it all makes the chasing seems pointless and one could reach a new mindset or insight into what wealth really is about. I feel is about a calm inner peace and new priorities. It also brings me purse peace telling myself if I really wanted, I could buy the birkin, Kelly and Chanels...but I prefer a curated small collection of quirky bags and invest more aggressively as i am aging.

I feel people are gravitating towards vintage because the old ones have gold plating and better quality in general not out of fear. Giving free advertising to a brand with obnoxious price increases without justification is the real issue here at least to me, but I think you can still wear the bags you love with strategic planning. In the case of the Birkin/Kelly since they are rarer thieves would probably assume its a knockoff and let you be, not so easy with Chanel since they know they were more accessible so high possibly of it being real equals thieving anyways in case its real because that resale price is too good.

Omg! Jess can’t you and Sophie, do something together? I love you both, you are so different and viewing with a perspective from 2 different ends of the globe.
The vintage flaps, are way more desirable, the leather quality is 10 times better and the metal was actually gold plaited.
Personally I baby my luxury watches and bags, partly because I can’t just go out and buy new, every time they have a scratch, but then again, there are plenty of women, in this world who use a Birken 40 as nothing more but a diaper bag, who don’t care and just buy a new if needed, but that’s out of my financial budget lol.
Btw. A stag of bracelets are for the ultra rich only, simply because the 4 basics cost a minimum of USD 50.000, the woman who can wear that as everyday bracelets, not even to mention their Watches, earrings, rings and necklaces, belong in a different class, they drive everywhere, only go upmarket places that often has security, the ladies are insured and can afford to replace it if needed.
Tamara Kalinic an influencer living in Italy, often travels with minimum 2-3 of her watches worth 90.000 USD, when she goes swimming she wear maybe 150.000 USD worth of bracelet stag, luxury watch, diamond earrings, rings… as seen in her Maldives video, she thinks very little of it. People and their finance are just different and so are their perspectives.

Hi Jess! ❤ I know soph lives in the uk so theft is more common so I remember her saying to be cautious of your surroundings when wearing designer. In Australia it’s something we don’t really face in most places. However I went to Malaysia years ago and I was wearing a Louis Vuitton and I did get robbbed by 8 guys in motor bikes. One of the scariest things I’ve ever been through. It happened very early in the morning when I was coming home from the hospital with my 2 children. They had swine flu the second we got off the plane. We rushed them to hospital and when we were released I noticed there were people on bikes behind me all of a sudden coming from the shadows. We ran to to phone booth and that’s where they tugged the bag off my shoulders till the strap of the bag finally snapped. My sons was so sick and we were all screaming. I had all our passports and meds and money in that handbag. We were stranded and it was an absolute nightmare.
I learnt my lesson not to wear a designer bag at night time and never took another designer bag to Malaysia ever again.
That was a freak situation since it was 3 am. A white woman and her 2 kids in the middle of the night with no one around except these Indian Malay bikers. They must have been susing us out for while.

Living in the UK I can say that it’s the same as anywhere in the world - certain areas will always be a hotspot for crime. I believe Sophie’s negative experiences were in London but there are definitely areas where most people wouldn’t even recognise the Chanel logo in the UK. I also think that context/circumstance matters - at my firm designer handbags are the norm.
My friend was robbed by a guy on a motorcycle on a busy street in Madrid at lunchtime. It wasn’t designer but it was easily accessible to him as we crossed the street. It was super distressing so sympathies for your experience.

Crime has always been a reality, I try not to be a target which means staying vigilant when out and about. I agree that bags we would carry a few years ago (e.g., a bag such as a Birken that does not scream logo) are more recognizable today and thus more of a target. I have a friend who had her mobile phone stolen on the metro-the train was at a stop and she was standing near the door. The thief waited for the bell and then grabbed the phone and dashed off just as the door was closing.

Great video. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I don't buy bags with the resale value in mind I wear them all Hermes, Chanel all of them. The only one I am babying is my Kelly quadrille because it is very rare. Maybe it is also the environment I am in I am not the only one who carries a good designer bag. I also opt a lot for bags that I can wear crossbody if I would go downtown or in a crowded place. Would I walk alone at night in full designer no and I would also be very conscious on a holiday or in a neighbourhood I don't know. But I am not spending that crazy amount on a Birkin or a Chanel to make the bags collect dust in the closet life is too short enjoy the things you love but always be aware of your surroundings

I’ve been loving the silver leather bags that are out now and had the Fendi mini baguette in my sights but I’ve tried so hard to not buy much luxury this year. I spotted a silver Bottega-esque mini pouch bag at Jo Mercer, the shoe store, $100 in the sale so bought that instead. I will be more relaxed wearing that at parties too. the idea of a luxury bag being an investment is honestly just luxury propaganda. Even a luxury vehicle depreciates at an incredible rate and the utility of a AMG Mercedes, for example, is far higher than that of a Chanel flap bag. Yet, nobody calls these cars investments, even when they are scarcely produced in the AMG line, have 100x the utility of a bag, and depreciate better than a bag does - and eventually, they become classic cars and go up in value if maintained properly. Still, they are not investment pieces. 10k bags like the Chanel flap being "investment pieces" is such a ridiculous piece of propaganda. You can literally buy a car for $10,000 that will hold its value better because, no matter how many years go by, there are still 1997 Toyota corollas on the road with a higher resale value than an unused but resold brand new Chanel flap.

Knock off bags are a big no, no. It's not fair to the companies who have worked so hard to get to where they are .

I don't think you should care so much about them in that way, they're usually a massive company/corporation that is profit hungry and won't think twice about massively inflating their product without a maintenance/increase in quality to reflect it. **Cough Chanel**
I think certain fashion houses still have some integrity but I don't blame people going for fakes for certain brands.. It's even embarrassing that some fakes are produced better than the authentic stock.

@@lucsun6960I'm not blaming anyone or telling anyone how to spend their money. It's just how I feel. It's illegal for a reason. I guess the law looks at it as a form of theft.

@@JP-kl1mj Of course it's essentially theft.. Just pointing out we're past the point of being loyal to some brands and being their ambassadors..
