A clear definition of littoral zone is the zone where aquatic plant growth begins and ends. Littoral zone can change based on low/high water events.
Riparian zones include both aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals in both lotic and lentic systems. But something to add is that riparian zones are much more than just an aquatic term. Riparian zones (or buffers) are necessary in other situations such as agriculture which it serves some of the same functions. Riparian zones are commonly damaged by humans especially on lakes, where people clear out trees and native vegetation for their perfect, phosphorus loaded, lakeside lawns.
And Steve gets the point just based on how the question was phrased. The question can refer to both the area that is freshwater or saltwater. And in Steve is correct that riparian is most commonly used for river/stream areas.
