my daughter was born at 36 weeks tomorrow 30 years ago .I happened to stumble on this song and first time hearing it i was in floods but I forced myself to listen again because over the years I'VE LEARNED THAT SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO SELF INDULGE AND ITS OK TO CRY

His songs are so amazing. If you haven't listened to Dark Thought I definitely recommend them. He wrote Dark Thought after Carrie Fisher died who was one of his best friends.

There is no second song that touches me like this one. I lost my twin sister and although I have never met her I still miss her. Sometimes I dream about her and wake up crying. Her name was Katharina. I have always told my parents I wanted a twin. Turns out I missed my angel twin. I hope she is happy where she is now.

Wow, how sad. It was just the other day when I was going through some of my late mother's papers and found a death certificate of a brother I would of had that never was. I knew that there were a couple of miscarriages, but to see the actual date and time and knowing I would of had an older brother hit me hard.

The girl that never was, Where to start...? The theme is extremely delicate, rare in music, and interwoven with perhaps the greatest human sorrow, the loss of a child. This time, not only did James push the boundaries of writing with the text and bring an incredibly serious text full of life and thought, but the video is incredibly vivid, perfectly tuned to the music and lyrics. His voice lends itself beautifully to this elegy, as does his British accent. Now a little about the text. The text is actually about a girl who was not born. Whether it was a miscarriage or a stillborn child, I didn't understand or the songwriter left it up to the listener to decide. The text has two climaxes, both beautifully emphasized tonally. The first: "First casualty of life is a plan!" is a philosophical review of the song's theme and the very meaning of life, and the second, in my opinion, is both wonderful and creepy, sensitive and tragic: We should never picked her name, cause now she has a face, and no matter what we do no one can take her place'' is that moment that causes immediate braking of the organism, the culmination of sadness on a completely different level. Parents who had to replace all their wishes and best intentions with sadness and tragedy that they will struggle with on a daily basis. And finally, I would like to emphasize the relationship between the stanza and the chorus of the song, both textually and tonally, and visually (video). The text of the stanza, which in a subtle, lyrical manner gradually intensifies the listener's empathy and sadness, is the complete antithesis of the chorus. The chorus describes what their little girl would be like a wonderfully idealized, real princess placed on the pedestal of parenthood. The music along with the rhythm gradually accelerates from the stanza to the chorus and culminates here, which is James' way of showing that hope and love always overcome sadness and pain. Visually throughout the stanzas, James and the actress playing the role of the wife pack away unused items and wardrobe for the baby, and the chorus is visually warmer with a shot of a smiling blonde girl running freely through fields of wheat bathed in the sun. Also, great contrast that is meant to enhance the message of the text. All in all, The Girl That Never Was is one of the best musical achievements of this century, a song that breaks even the hardest hearts into pieces and puts them back together with the hope that everything will be overpassed with hope and love!! It's my humble opinion...

I'm glad you talked about how perfect the video was. It was beautifully lit and perfectly sensitive to the lyrics. I loved that the video of the girl running through the fields was imprinted on James' face showing she will always be a part of him. Kudos to the filmmaker.

I’ve watched your reaction to this song many times because I can see the clear and strong emotions on your face. Today it hit differently though because even though I did not have a miscarriage with my daughter, I just found out that I have terminal brain cancer and will be leaving her instead. She’s only 14. No fourteen year old should have to lose the only real parent she’s ever had. And the hardest thing is that I don’t know how to help her through it. Luckily she’s had the same therapist since she was three and she is wonderful. But it tore my heart to pieces when she crawled up in my lap and cried because she had just realized that I wouldn’t be there when she gets married. Life just isn’t fair.

I've had eight miscarriages but 4 live births, and those children range from ages 8 to 19. I often think about the ones we lost. It's true. Nothing can replace them. I can only hope that they could feel my love for them.

After the first verse, I think I'm going to have to listen to this By Myself and Then come back to this. I don't know if this is where the song is going. But my daughter was still born sixteen years ago after ten years of trying to conceive.

Something I think works SO well in this song, (and forgive me, I'm not a musician by anyone's standards, literally anyone's) but this being in a MAJOR KEY (really uncommon for sad songs), gives it that uplifting twist on something that is so horrifically low... It suits the song perfectly, but I'm just not sure why.
Hopefully this gives a sense of catharsis for anyone who's gone though this trauma, if they come across his song, which unfortunately has a limited audience being from a British artist.

Initially comments I saw made me think this was his own experience, which seemed plausible considering how personal Monsters was and is, but I have since seen comments that say it was based on a friend's experience, but expressed first person for the most effective perspective. I do not have anything other than YT comments to go on though.
