Inside a TFSA, there is a 15% withholding tax on US investments. What about an RRSP or Margin Account? What about investments in other countries? In this video, we break down the tax details for investments in different accounts and countries.
Please remember to subscribe and like the video if you enjoy. Thanks.
Would've loved some examples of stocks for each scenario.
Thank you Marc! Great graphics. Very informative and well presented.
I just love Marc. Always explains so so well and with a soothing and kind voice. You would make a great professor Marc!!
Very detailed! Thank you!
More example always help out, good video.
This is such an important video to watch once you max out your tfsa and rrsp
Thank you. Exactly what I wanted to know
This is a great summary for new investors. That was very well presented Mark.
Thank you. Cheers - Marc
Watched and liked, thanks Marc!
Cheers, Jason. - Marc
Es genial que tengan esta clase de opciones, son buenos beneficiones, dependiendo de lo que quiera cada inversor claro. Creo que hiciste un gran trabajo explicando el tema de una forma sencilla."
"It's great that you all have this kind of options, it's good benefits, depending on what each investor wants, of course. I think you did a great job explaining the topic in a simple way."
Could you please do a video on taxation of investing in Canadian mutual funds that hold US and international equities in RRSP, TFSA and investment accounts? And whether the W-8BEN form is needed in which account? Thank you!
Really good breakdown Marc, I think a lot of retail investors really do not have a great grasp on the full tax picture.
So true, and thanks. - Marc
Thank you for this summary!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching. - Marc
Excellent
Very clear explanation thaks
Thank you. - Marc
Very good video. So If I want to have ETF who owns shares form all world like VT its better to use EU version for example VWCE, because ETF si accmulating dividends and reinvesting them for buying new shares - so it means that dividend is taxed only once when it is received in ETF.
Great video. I'd be interested in learning more about that 100K CRA reporting requirement - if one has a portfolio of several hundred thousand, how does this conflict with your siggestion to make sure you have a solid representation in US and international investments?
Good topic to cover, got a lot out of this one!
Thank you. - Marc
This was all very confusing. It might have been helpful to use some examples of popular investments or etfs to demonstrate the types of taxes which apply
If you hold shares of $ILF (Latin America Fund) then the you have two levels of withholding tax. Brazil/Argentina to America, then America to Canada.
In an RRSP the America to Canada portion of the withholding tax is exempt.
Hi Marc, Thanks, great info. QQ ... Do NEO US stocks in an RSP carry a withholding tax? CHEERS.
Great video! Just so you know it's 30 percent reduced to 15 in a rrsp. You said there is no withholding tax
Very informative video, thanks a lot! I'm totally new to investment, so please forget my ignorance, here is my question: I opened an account on Wealthsimple and put slightly over 100K, which entitled me to their Premium benefits which include free currency conversion fees. Knowing that, should I also buy USD ETF in my TFSA account?
Wow ! One of the best videos on taxation on etfs I just saw :) also - we would want which brokerage is the best to keep US stocks or etfs with respect to currency conversion fee charged ( heard about interactive brokers ) ?
Thanks so much. I'm not an authority on which brokerage would currently be offering the best conversion fee right now, but hopefully someone watching and reading your comment might have something to offer. Again, thanks. - Marc
So I am in the process of setting up my son's RDSP which i now have the funds for. I will be in catching up for i can go back 10 years.
I am looking at just Canadian divided ETF'S, Canadian stocks that follow the US S&P 500. What other items should I look at for a bit higher risk reward and what percentage in the portfolio be?
Thanks
Yes Mark!😀 Waiting for this topic with enthusiasm. Thank you for this! PERFECT! Cheers Atlantic Canada...yes, dealing with aftermath of Fiona hurricane. Yikes! So your presentation is like a treat and respite from all the clean up👍💯❤🩹🇨🇦
Hope you're recovering well. I have watched the coverage with interest, and our thoughts are with those who suffered, or are suffering, from this. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the suggestion and encouragement from your side to make it happen. 🙏- Marc
@@beaviswealth ⭐Marc, looks like the comments are grateful for your, once again, well prepared, fully packed informative presentation. You have a talent for presenting really well.💯 I find it "easy to listen and follow" the points you are making. What a gift you have.🎁 I look forward to anything more on this topic, if you still feel there is more to bring to our awareness. So much to learn, so little time eh!😉😊
What do you pay in taxes on the monthly dividends you earn on a Canadian ETF that owns Canadian stocks in a taxable account? Example HMAX
In the last section of additional things to consider in your video, when you say holding US ETFs, do you mean buying ETFs that trade on US stock exchange and that needs to be bought using US dollars (post Currency conversion)?
I have a few us stocks , but the annual fee at my broker for a US RRSP account would be more than the withholding tax…so I either switch Broker or get more US stocks ETFs to make the fee worth it, I guess.
And some Canadian ETFs with US stocks in ETFs.
the foreign withholding tax in tfsa is already taken out from the distributions paid out like VFV would holding US stocks correct?
How Canadian ETFs that only contain Canadian stocks is taxed, especially on devidends? is the ETF taxed the same on eligible dividends as regular Canadian stock?
let's see XDIV etf and RBC stock, are they taxed the same?
If I buy XSP in my TFSA, i will pay a FWT. But if i buy HXS in the same account will I avoid the FWT ?
was not aware that holding US ETF's had withholding tax in an RRSP. Always assumed if it was in an RRSP no withholding tax would apply.
Ya I’ve always been told that. I’m going to double check with another advisor. This doesn’t seem right
In TSFA if I bought TSLA stock will I have to pay tax on that?
TSLA doesn't pay a dividend, so nothing to apply there. Other income would be sheltered in the TFSA. - Marc
great video,
i'm kinda suprised that there was this much to talk about tho XD
Thanks so much. Really appreciate you watching the video. - Marc
Do you aware of the new 10% tax on ETFs that are related to PTP? This tax will make all non-US investors to pay 10% on the "gross proceeds", not on the distribution.
Hi
Hi Marvin.
