Today on this 2015 Jeep Cherokee, we're going to show you a Curt Class III Two Inch Receiver Hitch, part number C13171. All right, this is what the hitch looks like once installed on the Cherokee. We're kind of looking down from below so you can see what's going on, but this . You can see the body of the hitch, the crossbar stays underneath of the bumper here, and then it reaches up and around the exhaust. We have two generous loops here for your safety chains, and here's our two inch receiver opening right here. It has a nice collar built around it for strength.
This also uses a 5/8 inch hitch pin or your favorite hitch pin lock. All right, now we'll go ahead and show you the capacities of the hitch. By itself as it sits, this can pull a 5,000 pound trailer, which is it's pulling weight. Then it can handle 750 pound ton weight, other weight pulling down on the hitch. When you add a weight distribution assembly, this upgrades the hitch to a 6,000 pound application, but the ton weight still stays the same at 750 pounds.
Now always double check your owner's manual or your dealership to make sure your vehicle can handle these kinds of weights. All right, next we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground, it's going to be about 11 and 3/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper will be about 4 and 1/2 inches. Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First step for install, we're going to get our vehicle ready.
To do that, we need to look underneath the vehicle and up towards the frame above the exhaust. We'll look for a wire harness that's clipped into the bottom of the frame. We loosen that up and move it out of the way. We're going to start off on the passenger side. This is a clip for a wire harness right here.
I'm using a trim panel tool. Works really good to pop them loose. You can probably get by with a flat head screwdriver as well. There's one on each side of the frame to loose up as well. After the hitch is installed, you'll take a few moments to zip tie this and take up all the slack. Let's just leave that loose and out of the way. The square plug right here we need to remove as well. I think we'll grip it with a pair of pliers and pull it out. Okay that was our passenger side. Let's do the same thing on our driver's side. All right, now at this point our vehicle's ready to install the hitch. So let's go ahead and put some hardware into your frame. We have this long flat block with the carriage bolt. Three of each will be installed in the frame on both sides. Now to help us to install this in a close frame, we're going to use the bolt leaders that come with the kit. They just simply thread on. Use that to help pull it through the frame. Might be a good idea to go ahead and push the parts individually inside first and then pull everything together once you pull it out the hole. These are short down here because it's going to be tight quarters once we put it in place. So first let's go ahead and route our bolt leader through the access hole and then out to the side of the frame. We'll also show the attachment points for the hitch. Our access hole will eventually get a fastener here as well. This oval hole here . And then if you look straight over to the other side of the frame and up, maybe about a half inch behind this, on up there's another hole that we're going to install the hardware. And we're going to do that one first. So let's go ahead and put our bolt leader in. You'll route it to your access hole. We'll take our block, thread it on, and push it into the frame. And then thread on our bolt. Then we'll go ahead and pull it out the frame, make sure it fits and it works. Then we'll leave a pole wire on here because when we put the hitch up, we're actually going to push this bolt back into the frame. On this one, I'm going to take the bolt leader off and next we'll install a hardware in this hole here, but we're actually going to put everything together first, then put it in the hole, and then pull it back through. Push it all into the frame, then back through. All right, we're done with our passenger side. Repeat the same process over on the driver's side. All we need now is an extra set of hands to help put the hitch up into place. First we're going to take this bolt with the wire still on it, push it back in the frame. Then when we put our hitch up, we'll go ahead and thread this through the hitch, and then when we have it in place we'll pull the bolt
