What a thoughtful video, Nick. That intersection between mathematics and practical observation is fascinating....

Thanks, Recently someone made a video of a triumph that, the starter would spin, but didn't engage the flywheel. When he opened it up, the starter housing was broken, causing other gears to detach and bent things etc. He blamed it on design, but the bike was like 6 years old, so design obviously worked for 6 years. I suggested it may have been, someone hitting the starter when the engine was running, there fore the speeding flywheel hit the starter gear and busted the housing of the starter. That's kinda what I saw when he showed a short of the starter and busted chunks inside the case. It's still what I think but he'd written back saying, that's not how a motorcycle starter is set-up. Watching your video sure makes me believe I was right. But I'm not making a deal out of it. Heck, I don't even know if a motorcycle starter will engage when running, but i know cars will. Im not going to experiment, haha.
    Anyway, thanks for the video.

Fantastic, through the spirals the oil is spread everywhere on the gear automatically. This shows the importance of good lubrication. I could imagine that the choice of the right oil has also some influence on these effects.

I wonder if it would be possible to make a working cut-away engine (4-stoke mower or something) then show different viscosities of oil going through it.

Hm, maybe with a combination of stable glas, plastic, gfk and a watercooling system, if it is possible at all. It would be changing the behavior of the motor, but still give a very interesting sight.

Nick Moore if you can get a camera in the crank case through the sump, you could film the oil squirters squirting oil onto the underside of the pistons / cylinder wall, you could also capture the movement of the pistons, conrods and crank.

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time troubleshooting the starter on my car because I took the spark plugs out. It definitely behaves differently without compression.

Yeah, they spin a lot easier when the cylinders are open. If I can get a hold of a junker I should try to film the cams/valves.

The starter on my bike is a bit different. I took it out to clean & inspect the brushes. All looks good, bench tested. Bike starts fine.
My query is re the engagement; the design is different from the video whereby mine does not seem to have the available movement to engage/disengage. Is it always engaged to the stater ring.....?
