This is a great video. Just to see the depth of the module out of the case, and the 16-10pin connector. That alone has saved a lot of time and headaches.
Extremely informative. Thank you for sharing as I am now heading down the journey of trying to plug in my sound studio 3 into a eurorack case. Seems like I’m going to need audio cables coming out of the vca ports. 3.5mm to 6.35mm and route it into my mixer
I love how articulate and at the same time goofy you are. You say things sometimes (I'm at 1:59) where you talk about the anxiety of adding new modules. Yes! I'm there right now in ModularGrid sweating with you, lol!
Supremely useful, thanks! Glad you showed us exactly how much real estate it takes up on a rack. I'm gonna have to plan and measure things out for my DIY rack project a bit more carefully then.
For the price of a Mother32, it makes sense to have it be the cornerstone of your first row, your second row, and your third row. What I really like is that it neatly puts all the patch points off to the right so you don’t have to see/reach through a thick maze of cables to reach a switch or knob. Hopefully you insulated yourself from static electricity buildup before you ran your hand along the circuit board. Does the lack of a governing (or even DeFacto) standards organization for Eurorack, I guess one has to be very careful about voltages, pin order, ribbon directions, etc.
@@MoltenMusicTech so I have the sound studio dfam and subh and I was thinking about taking out the sub H and placing in a pico drive, black sequencer and vc f filter alll from Erica synths. Hp wise they fit but was wondering if they can be plugged in? Guess I can stop being lazy and open the damn thing too haha
For this very reason i have opted for the 60 hp case to put my modules in, and a 3 tier stand for the mother, dfam and modules. Once i fill the case up, i'll just keep buying more and sticking them on 3 tier stands. I am also eyeballing the subharmonicon. I eventually plan to have a moog 3 tier stand and a mutable instruments 3 tier stand.
Not as it is, it's not a eurorack power supply inside. But i'm sure with a bit of modding and a ribbon cable then anything is possible. Personally I added a uzeus power module to it because i dont like messing about with power supplies.
Hi Robin, firstly thank you for this but I also have a question - I think the sound i now get from the VCA directly is a little different from the audio output I was getting when this was in its standalone case. I’m sure the filter now is different also. Did you detect there was any difference when you moved it into the rack? Am I just losing my mind?
Thanks 🙏 there is a difference in that there’s some circuit changing the output to line level. But it’s not something that I’ve noticed. But to be honest mine went back into its own case,
I'm considering an Intellijel Atlantis in my rack. It's sort of a space hog too. What you get, in that space, is worth it. That pair of oscillators should play nicely with the M-32. I also considered the Dreadbox offerings. Out of the box, the Erebus is designed for polychaining. I think it's the sliders on the envelope that sold me. Anyone with pros or cons Atlantis vs. Erebus? In one of your recent videos you mentioned polyphony. Are we mostly limited to Mutable Instruments Yarns for that purpose? I've gone way thrifty with just rails and an Ikea Rast Nightstand. The Rast is nice for an 84HP rail setup. Shoot, I even ripped the boards, so that I got two racks for the price of one...I did purchase a $2, thrift store, hard, suitcase for my future travel rig.
The Atlantis is nice - i've seen some great stuff done with it. If i had stayed with desktop synths then I would definitely have an Erebus. Polyphonic modules are a rarity - they tend to be on the more digital side - but as CV is monophonic then i guess that all makes sense.
The audio out is connected to one of the two cables I remove at 3:53 - there is no 1/4" audio jack when you put it in a Eurorack case. You use the VCA output in the patch panel.
Hey sorry if this is a stupid question, but currently Im plugging my headphones directly into the back of the m32. If I mount it in a case and add a reverb module next to it, would i need to get an output module to add to the end of the chain to listen to it? Or can i feed the output of the reverb back into the m32 and use the VCA out as my output? (If so can i plug my headphones directly into that output or would i need to send it to an audio interface first?) Thankyou!
With audio signals the best thing to do is try it out and see what happens. There are "right" ways to do things and there's doing whatever works for you. Ideally, yes, go from M32 to reverb to an output module. Or perhaps put the reverb on an aux send from the output module, Or use a mixer, or go though your audio interface. But the M32 does have some mixing ability so you could route back through and then try to listen to a mono signal out of the VCA... but im not convinced that would contain the mix.... but as i say, try it and see. An output module would make you life so much easier.
great video . i have moved the moog dfam to my eurorack case like you. Now i would use the moog empty case powered for plug other modules , i have also flying bus board but i dont know what i need to be able for this. Does anybody can help me for suggestion? Great Molten Music Technology !!!!
I hope to do that sort of thing soon. I'm just uploading another video about filling my second row - i really think I've now got a workable performance system and i'm going to devote some time to making music with it. Just out of interest is live streaming something you'd be interested in? And if so on which medium? Cheers.
I watch the streams of Colin Benders on RUclips, so I would be interested in live streams! I sometimes catch his Eurorack sessions live, but I usually watch them afterwards, while studying or reading books. I like the changing soundscapes over time and the interaction with the audience. Video length wouldn't really be an issue, his livestreams usually are 2 hours long. Twitch or RUclips would be the media I would probably watch your stream on, either live or afterwards. Hope that helps!
Also: I have started on my modular journey, in part thanks to you. I have just bought the Arturia Microbrute, with CV possibilities. I am sure I will expand on this with a modular someday! Keep on doing what you are doing!
Molten Music Technology -- I wouldn't have time to follow a live stream set. What would be cool is Molten Noodling, guest starring this week's module: Maths. I don't see a lot of theory or examples of why people are making melody and rhythm choices . It wold be cool to hear, "I had this rift in the key of F and then the beat just really fit."...or "The maths slope was making this drone and I needed this little rift to make it work...so I used a clock divider, bla, bla, bla." That's just my fevered idea of how RUclips should be
I'm a recent viewer but I've been enamoured to build my own eurorack after watching your modular video series (especially after hearing the black wavetable), and even got myself a job for the sole purpose of buying synths. I'm planning to start after buying a Behringer D though. I still have no idea if it'll be able to integrate well like how your Mother 32 does to a eurorack. Which leads me to ask: 1. Are you planning to take a look at the Behringer Model D? 2. Are you going to make a video about modular synths to sound like polyphonic ones, or is that too common a knowledge that you just need to research a bit on the web? Apologies. I just started with synths this year, after purchasing a JD-Xi.
I wasn't planning to get a Behringer Model D but if one comes my way I'll certainly look at it. Modular is more often about the interaction of monophonic sounds, but you can get polyphonic synth voices - or you can do clever things to combine oscillators so you can play them as a polyphonic synth, it would be a question of converting MIDI chords into different CV outputs. So it's not a simple thing. It might be something i'll look into at some point.
I'm about to embark on installing a whole moog sound studio into a custom case. I'm thinking about trying to take out the whole power assemble and output jack to install into my new custom case, so that I can have the audio output through its own jack rather than having to use the VCA as the only way to output the signal. Anyone ever had experience trying to do this?
@@MoltenMusicTech Perfect, thank you very much :') I've been sniffing around the idea of making a semi-modular rack for about a fortnight now, but your channel's really made me want to take that leap!! I'll essentially be doing what you're doing aha... Making it up as I go along
Why would anyone take the M32 out of it's perfectly fine, powered case and put it into an expensive Eurorack case where it can eat up all the HP? Because it looks cool? Makes absolutely no sense. Adds $ for zero value.
Integrating it into a larger case rather than having something separately sitting there needing separate power taking up space - makes a lot of sense to me.

Nah, I usually like to rub balloons on my head at every opportunity.
So, I need a 10-16 pin connector cable to stick it into a Make Noise 7U case? Will the DFAM require the same cable? Thanks.
Yes - it comes with the cable
Molten Music Technology mine did not come with that cable.
Then best check with Moog
For what these things cost, it's a shame they don't at least come with every cable you may need..
Thanks amigo, very insightful! This answered all my mother 32 migration questions. Very much appreciated 🤜
Excellent...! thank you for this series, you and I are going through the same growing pains with modular, but the journey is fun, eh? 🙂🎛🎶

Thank you for all of this. I could harness that second oscillator with a Dreadbox WLM (Erebus) Filter...
Why does moog look like it has two places to plug power in? Is it for convenience? Thx
It doesn't, only one is the Eurorack power socket - the other port is something else.
