As a Jaguar XJ-S owner myself I completely agree with you Gary. The XJ-S is a thing of beauty. Yes they have unusable rear seats and other quirks but when the sun is shining and your on an open B road you’ll always feel a million dollars. I think the XJ-S should be celebrated more. As you say and I agree. One of the best cars Jaguars ever made. Great video Gary. Keep them coming. 😉👍
I’ll never forget the moments our CEO in the 80’s used to drive his XJS off the premises, and, as he left and went through the gears, the front end would virtually lift off the ground!! A beautiful metallic dark green edition with cream leather interior heart❤. Fabulous to see this model of car safely in your hands. By the way, superb video and editing. If only other RUclipsrs would think about how the viewer sees the content, and making it a pleasure to watch, rather than just putting their face in front of a camera. Having discovered this channel, I’m looking forward to watching from first episode to last. First class. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Had the real pleasure driving a restored XJS and what a wonderful thing it was to drive! Lots of effortless power but more enjoyable driving at about 45/50. Another great video Gary.
Harking back to a previous episode, I've got to say, that the work you did on re-building the soft top, on the Roller, was quite frankly exceptional!! You are clearly beyond DIY! Great channel, love the work, keep it up!! Best, Simon👍👍👍
I found Gary's videos doing research as I was thinking of purchasing a 91 to 96 XJS Coupe, well because of Gary I'm no longer thinking, I'm committed to finding a one or two owner car. Truly educational and entertaining these XJS episodes have been. Much thanks and gratitude!
Love the XJ-S/XJS, controversially I have always preferred them over the E-Type. I prefer GT cars, continental cruisers, and this colour combo is just perfect. As a mechanic/restorer for the past 35+ years I have to say I admire your skills and work ethic, well done, love this channel !!
Love the channel. Excellent content and quality. Noticed the Mercedes E Class (W210) in the background. Another Classic Car! Encourage you to feature it for a moment or two showing-off that beauty.
I had a pre face-lift xjs convertible v12, it was without a doubt the best car I've ever owned, so smooth and turned heads whenever I drove it, cream leather interior with a mohair roof....Great, wish I'd kept it 😀
The xk8 took a lot of styling Qs from the e type and now is considered a modern classic , how time flies , i seriously considered buying one, the xjs looks great mate , i remember as a kid my dads mate had one he went on holiday and parked it in my dads garage, i used to go and just sit in it for ages, your videos are bringing back memories id totally forgotten about 👍
This is what Jaguar stands for, style, elegance, power. I hate the electric stuff they make nowadays. Can’t afford it, but I’ll turn my head when I see one!
I just discovered this channel this week and wow! I’ve absolutely loved the XJS series, and being an x100 owner I found the comparison really interesting. Fantastic subject matters, really good workmanship and great production. Keep up the amazing work!!!
My favourite car ever when I was a kid my best friends dad had a new xjs coupe v12 I remember being in the back and I literally couldn’t hear the engine!! It was so smooth and woffed along and I will never forget the smell it was unbelievable. I would buy one tomorrow but they need to be garaged
Gary, Your presentation and personality shine through on this wonderful XJ-S. Like any classic car of this era, these are not without gremlins, however, with regular maintenance and use a Jaguar XJ-S will bring smiles for miles.
Gary this was extremely well done. And not one but two headlining. i can just see the off camera questions coming at you - “ oh so you think the headlining needs doing and you say you know how to do it??” Do remember to check the steering alignment as the steering wheel is off centre at the straight ahead- something easily adjusted.
Have to say totally agree with you, was never a huge fan of the XJS when I was growing up, but I have to say now the XJS is a Jaguar I would love to own or drive, but it would have to be a later model for me. Another excellent Video Gary.
It definitely is a slow burner. At the launch I was not a great admirer of the XJS. Now I think it’s the best looking Jaguar ever and far better looking than the E type coupe. You are a lucky man. Take good care of her.
Me encantas tus vídeos, que cariño les das a estas joyas, pero es que este Jaguar XJS es uno de mis coches preferidos desde que tenia uso de razón. Fantástico trabajo Gary!!
I’m like you …. I never took to them when they came out….. I’d had an E type…. S type, mk10,(420g)…Daimler 420…… but when I was a rep my boss had the 3.6…..an let me drive it….. an it was then!….that I realised what a lovely car they were. Great work Gary as usual….. again they do bite you in the arse😆occasionally…… but on completion…. Don’t you feel good 👌🏼
Hi Gary, I’m a new subscriber and I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your videos on the XJS restoration, beautiful car! Looking forward to watching your other videos, thanks 👍
That takes me back - I was fighting these things to the death over 30 years ago! Lovely when they work but I wouldn't have the will to own one now. I also insist on a clean painted workshop floor and use sheets of cardboard to lie on and protect it. I did a water pump on a Z3 last week and found that whilst the original under trays were still there, some of it was held on with cable ties. Refitting it properly with bolts as per factory just makes such a nicer job. I don't have your level of skill and craftsmanship but I like to do a job right. Anyway, subscribed!
In the United States where i live, these cars had such a bad reputation for reliability issues through most of the 20 years that they were made. But near the end, 1992-1996 they improved dramatically probably because Ford Motor Company took over Jaguar by that point. Personally i just love the early models from 1975-1985. Even today, i could stare at that car for hours. It's the most beautiful car in my eyes. Even nicer than the E-type.
... really enjoying this show- a very resourceful & talent man; & Lee’s music’s magic to hear tae! sending gidvibes & all the very best to you & yours fae sunny glesga sir...
Keep up the sterling work with the cars Gary. As a relatively small channel compared to others, you really do get your message across. Look forward to the next one.
Great work Garry. Interesting what you said about product placement. In the 70's ITV asked British Leyland if they could borrow some of their cars in their new police drama, The Sweeney. BL couldn't be bothered with it all. So they asked Ford. People of a certain age will always associate that show with the Ford Granada. Ford sold loads of them because of that.
I’ve always loved the XJS. Other than the gauge binnacle/steering column area on both the original and the updated version, I believe the interior is one of the most sculpturally satisfying production car interiors ever, for me tied only with the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow/Corniche cars and the SZ Rolls’ and also the old pre-DB7 Aston Martins. Only Brits could make such interiors.
The XJS - like many 70's cars which were considered ungainly in period - has aged very well These cars had hard acts to follow in the DB6, E-type etc Keep up the good work Gary
Ha! I know the Rolls is the same I keep meaning to get round to it. It’s only a half hour job but the important thing is, on both cars the tracking is absolutely spot on. I’m doing the steering on the Rolls as we speak so I’ll do this at the end.Regards.
Hey Gary Lad ! I really enjoyed this video and you've done a great job on the XJS - what a beautiful looking motor. dont know what it is about the colour combination but I think its by far the best and although thirsty, id choose the V12 over the 3.6 or 4.0 any day of the week. Great skills on the work you've done in this episode and also underlines the fact that all hoses should be replaced as the pressure simply finds the next weekest place..... cant wait till the next one .... keep 'em coming Lad !
Great vid, but you're wrong about the back seats, I frequently carried 2 adult passengers in the rear seats of mine back in the 90s, I'm 6ft and spent my time in the back too. 👍
I have just bought one of these, 89 3.6 manual in Dorchester grey. Needs quite a bit of work, it's nowhere near the condition of the one in the video. I have been quite impressed with it as a drivers car though, nice little project afoot.
I must admit Gary , I’ve seen your videos on your Corniche and this XJS , and I’m in envy of your practical skills in all aspects of the motor car, there seems no area which you are not prepared to tackle, excellent. I’m slightly surprised you considered the ride of the XJS firmer than the XK8 , the XK8 was based on the XJS , but I suspect the larger low profile tyres on those larger wheels might have contributed to this feel . Love the vids , well done.
Hi Martin. Yes you could be right. The XJS has the wider wheels fitted and adjustments made so they don’t catch when the steering is on full lock. Turning range isn’t great. It’s almost as if I need to make a 3 point turn when turning into a road!! Although it looks great, I can’t help but think it compromises the ride quality of the way the car was originally designed to turn and handle. Also low profiles give a harder ride.
Hi Gary , from Sydney , Australia , re Roger Moore , he wanted either a Mercedes Benz 230SL, OR a Giant Jaguar mk10, as when they were first released they were the "-IT-" car of the times, as shown in their sales as the early "pesky" 3.8litre version sold near 13,000 units in 3 years , however the later and way better 4.2litre versions took an extra near 7 years to sell another 10,000 odd. Moore's own personal car at the time was a Jag mk10. With the 4.2 liter upgrade whether as a mk10 4.2 or the re named 420G version they all had the better Dunlop brake servo system, the better quick ratio Marles-AdWest variable ratio power steering, and the way way better Borg Warner type8A automatic box, that was an "all bells & whistles" version of what Ford people would call a C4 Cruise-o-matic. Your XJS Gary looks fantastic , for 32 years ,I owned a rare long wheelbase 1973 series 1 XJ6 in the identical colors paint/leather as your XJS . I only sold it as I had replaced it with a ultra low mileage 1 owner 1967 Jaguar 420G the ox-blood deep maroon leather interior is so good it looks like it is 1 month old , yes, that stunning, however when you put your foot down the 420G has vastly more power than the XJ from 420G's bronze head, triple carby engine and the mk10/420G car is a half ton heavier , longer & wider than the LWB XJ6. When purchased in late 2012 my 420G had been half resting with it's elderly Doctor owner and just used once weekly to shop, it had a mere 50,025 miles on the odometre with a service history book to match the mileage, in my now almost 10yers ownership I have added an extra 35,000miles to that total and this fantastic old "monster" Jag has been absolutely flawless, totally reliable, sadly it's only downside it is painted old English white but beggars cannot be choosers and an Immaculate car can be forgiven for being in a somewhat boring colour .
Hi Gary, I note your comment below about the replacement wheels, what are they from? The XJ-S should waft you down the road, not have a hard ride. I think at this time it would have had 15” wheels, possibly XJ-S lattice (they’re a bugger to clean). They may be difficult to get tyres for but should transform the ride.
Hey, just found this channel after rewatching yours and Danny Miller’s/Aaron’s storyline in Emmerdale - by far my all time favourite storyline shown on the show for a multitude of reasons. Your acting was absolutely phenomenal, I still feel genuine anger anytime Gordon is so much as mentioned on the show - it’s not often a character on a show makes me feel like that. I can’t imagine it’s easy playing such a vile character but it’s an extremely important role to take on. I just wanted to let you know that your work on Emmerdale is still appreciated today (despite how angry Gordon makes me and many others) - it’s great to see that you’re still doing well!
I've got an old guy whol lives in South Africa during the winter months over here then comes back and buys a Jaguar XJS ( rough.) for me to spruce up. He won't spend any money but exspects quality workmanship 🙄🙄.We have a laugh though . He's 87 and a ex car dealer i'm 62 and still painting cars !!!!
Wonderful Gary, it really is one of the nicest XJS’s around. I was one of the few when t was launched that really loved the controversial flying buttresses. When you think what it had to follow I think they really had to make it radically different so as to make its own statement after the iconic E-type. And you did a fantastic job on your friends XK8. I wonder if it’s possible to restore the finish on the wood in that one, the lacquer has gone milky. I bet it’s a water based lacquer as opposed to the oil based lacquer on your XJS. I notice with the water based ones they seem to gain that milky haze where as the old style as in yours keeps the depth of gloss. I’m really looking forward to the Mercedes, always loved those. Thanks so much for such wonderful videos and all the best to you and your family.
You said that the E-type jag was one of the most beautiful cars ever made, wise words indeed, so.............are you going to feature one on your channel?
Uh Oh...............................Jong Ho 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hi Gary, Steve English nigh club manager had one of these back in the early 1980’s, use to park it outside his club (Hollywoods) on Duke Street Lpool, alongside his Doorman Big "H" Henry,s White Lotus Esprit 🤫🤫🤫
New to your channel, I think it's great. Be interested in a workshop tour, what floor tiles are they? they look great, but are they practical in the garage for moving jacks and putting cars on axle stands? would like similar for my own.
Hey Gary, just found your channel and am really enjoying it. I have been working on a BMW 840Ci for several years now, hope to finish it before it finishes me! Like you, I try to do everything, but fair play mate, would never have dared tackle the RR hood! As an aside, always liked your acting, how do you manage to look exactly the same as you did in Peak Practice!? I am subscribed so will follow any future videos, well done again.
What did Jag glue the headliners with flour and water? They all let go! The steering wheel needs the be straightened up - that offset would drive me mad on such a sorted motor!
You know they do. But if wider wheels have been fitted, they have to be adjusted so the tyre doesn’t make contact with the arch..giving you a smaller turning lock..
During the road test with the lady .... NO NOISE INSIDE !!! ... Yeah pay £50,000 for some lux car and guaranteed tire roar !!!!! .... LOVELY COLOR ALSO !
I think the government charges less duty on a car that is built with more than two seats. A two seater sports will require more duty to be paid than a saloon. I stand to be corrected!! Regards.
Why don't you get some of the finger condoms sorry latex finger covers to you washing hands continually. Try a Honda V4 mc engine with hardly any gap, and a radiator that you can only move 10mm. And with hands that struggle in XL gloves for being to tight, my hand look like it had been in a fight with a wild cat. Patrick MacNee drove a Jaguar XJC with Broadspeed arches , it ruined the cars looks unless it was out on the tracks. They got so cheap they became a pub landlords motorcar and all the naughty men .
Haaaa!! British cars! The Rolls Royce is exactly the same. The engines were fitted with all their ancillaries and gearbox then fitted to the car complete but murder if you need access to do a job or replace anything…Gloves get dirty too Neil!!
@@classic.obsession true but you could just use them for headliners on grp backs. Take care and be safe out there, and yes I did watch Peak Practice. Lol 😆 ✌️ peace
Looks exactly like mine except the previous owner had the factory wheels chromed. I love when other people have one.
I’ll never forget the moments our CEO in the 80’s used to drive his XJS off the premises, and, as he left and went through the gears, the front end would virtually lift off the ground!! Thankyou for your kind words Simon. I hope you enjoy them. I think there’s 85 episodes to get through!! Regards and thanks for tuning in..
So gratifying to see this one fell into the right hands.
Don't stop what you're doing. You have a nice gentle way of narrating without any stupid talk. Roger from West Sussex.
Had the real pleasure driving a restored XJS and what a wonderful thing it was to drive!
Lots of effortless power but more enjoyable driving at about 45/50.
Another great video Gary.
I’ve got a 1991 that I absolutely love! Closing those doors is like closing a bank vault door.
What a gorgeous colourway. So cool to recreate the same photo 25 years apart. Cannot wait to finish the restoration of my 1986 XJ-S V12.
Harking back to a previous episode, I've got to say, that the work you did on re-building the soft top, on the Roller, was quite frankly exceptional!!
You are clearly beyond DIY!
Great channel, love the work, keep it up!!
Best,
Simon👍👍👍
Enjoyed this video, as Ex B/L man retired here with my 87XJSC V12 in New Zealand and my Range Rover still loyal to my roots
Watching this as I’m about to go through my XJS, the photos from past and present got me in the feels.
Stately and sporty for the people . The people who admired and were inspired without any hint of arastacratic image. Nail on head!
Beautiful car Gary. Thank you for showing Brock and I the XJS at Halewood. 👍
Always a pleasure to meet you both David and enjoyed your stories too.
Thanks Gary
I have enjoyed your series on the XJS.
Currently restoring my 1980 5.3 V12.
Just the tonic to keep me pushing forwards 👍
Beautiful, sad and positive, you’ve done it again, keep up the excellent work
I had a pre face-lift xjs convertible v12, it was without a doubt the best car I've ever owned, so smooth and turned heads whenever I drove it, cream leather interior with a mohair roof....Great, wish I'd kept it 😀
Thank you for a great channel your passion of cars is mine also
I’ve actually sat in the back of an XJS and still have my legs today!😁 I somehow still managed to enjoy the trip and it wasn’t a short one!
The seats are remarkable...rarely do you see an older xjs seat hold up like that. Great find.
Splendid finish to the XJS story. It gave us a bit of a moment 🥲🥲. XX K&D.
This is fast becoming one of my favourite channel's 💪👍🇬🇧
The xk8 took a lot of styling Qs from the e type and now is considered a modern classic , how time flies , i seriously considered buying one, the xjs looks great mate , i remember as a kid my dads mate had one he went on holiday and parked it in my dads garage, i used to go and just sit in it for ages, your videos are bringing back memories id totally forgotten about 👍
I drive an xk8 convertible when I’m over in La and I love it! Beautiful design and lovely smooth engine.
@@classic.obsession Hey Gary weres La , Lar 🤭🤭🤭🤭

I drove xjs's for 20 years..my last one of 2 I put 280,000 miles on her.
Fully maintained by Jag
Miss her dearly
Yes, they are very beautiful cars. My onkel had a xjs12 in the early 90s, and that car was a beauti as well. I just love em !!

When I did my XK8 headliner, I put sound deadening tiles on the roof first, it made hell of a difference.

I’ve always loved the XJS.
I love the intro song 👌👌
Gorgeous car indeed
I've got an old guy whol lives in South Africa during the winter months over here then comes back and buys a Jaguar XJS ( rough.) for me to spruce up. He won't spend any money but exspects quality workmanship 🙄🙄.We have a laugh though . He's 87 and a ex car dealer i'm 62 and still painting cars !!!!
Been there, done that many times, remember every screw and clip.
You time served with Jag?
I found that rear seats in automobiles like this were best for holding luggage at a comfortable height.
wow gazza what a car
You said that the E-type jag was one of the most beautiful cars ever made, wise words indeed, so.............are you going to feature one on your channel?
Uh Oh...............................Jong Ho 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi Gary, Steve English nigh club manager had one of these back in the early 1980’s, use to park it outside his club (Hollywoods) on Duke Street Lpool, alongside his Doorman Big "H" Henry,s White Lotus Esprit 🤫🤫🤫
Trip down memory lane!!
What’s the song before the intro? I believe you used it in the first XJS video also. Somber and dignified, matches the car.
New to your channel, I think it's great. Be interested in a workshop tour, what floor tiles are they? they look great, but are they practical in the garage for moving jacks and putting cars on axle stands? would like similar for my own.
greatest jag ever
Hey Gary, just found your channel and am really enjoying it. I have been working on a BMW 840Ci for several years now, hope to finish it before it finishes me! Like you, I try to do everything, but fair play mate, would never have dared tackle the RR hood! As an aside, always liked your acting, how do you manage to look exactly the same as you did in Peak Practice!? I am subscribed so will follow any future videos, well done again.
What did Jag glue the headliners with flour and water? They all let go! The steering wheel needs the be straightened up - that offset would drive me mad on such a sorted motor!
Surely that roof needs more sound deadening material.
Hi Roger, you would think so and I know some people put extra in before fitting the new headliner but the car really is silent as it is. Kind regards.
Wow!
Tell him his MOT has expired :) Good job that. Fancy helping with my XJ headliner?
By the way, which is the estate's location at the end of the video? Impressives trees there!
Chatsworth House
Bakewell, Derbyshire.
Hi. Does anybody know what Gary uses to clean the leather?
They don't have wheel alignments in the UK?
You know they do. But if wider wheels have been fitted, they have to be adjusted so the tyre doesn’t make contact with the arch..giving you a smaller turning lock..
@@classic.obsession Then you need to remove the steering wheel and reset it too centre.
The ironic thing is the Xk8 sits on a modified XJS floorpan. Would still have the XJS
gazz what happened to the acting you to watch you in peakpratice bw john aldo looks well a true liverpool legend
During the road test with the lady .... NO NOISE INSIDE !!!
...
Yeah pay £50,000 for some lux car and guaranteed tire roar !!!!!
....
LOVELY COLOR ALSO !
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’d love to see you do a Citroen DS23efi .
Several other cars have unusable back seats like the 911. They do it for insurance purposes.
I think the government charges less duty on a car that is built with more than two seats. A two seater sports will require more duty to be paid than a saloon. I stand to be corrected!! Regards.
Objectively the XJS is a terrible car… so I bought five of them emotionally. They aren’t cheap any more so it might be the last time I get one.
Yep, Chatsworth is where it belongs!
