Bigger than Elvis, bigger than The Beatles!
After some thought, my impression of Freddie is that of the largest, grandest finale skyrocket in a pyrotechnic show. It climbs the highest, it rises with the most speed, yet that speed is somewhat camouflaged by its towering height, then it ultimately explodes with the most glorious display conceivably possible, leaving the audience with a suspended moment of silent awe, realizing that the end of the show has arrived, leaving us in insane appreciation of the show, yet, always, always wishing for more.
    Thank you, Freddie!

I saw Queen during their rise in popularity in the US. They were quite successful in Europe and Japan from 1974-1976. They toured the US with Mott the Hoople first and then in 1976 Thin Lizzy supported Queen. In support of News of the World record they toured Canada/US. My first Queen concert (I was a fan from 1974) on November 23, 1977 was in Philadelphia, at the Spectrum. What a show that was!! I’ll never forget seeing them live for the first time. It was not the last however, 12 times total, the last being at Wembley Arena, in London, 7.11.86. I saw Queen 4 times in Philadelphia, 5 times at Madison Square Garden, 1 time in Maryland, 1 time in NJ, and 1 time in London. I have a very special gift from Freddie Mercury. That first Queen concert we had 4th row seats. I couldn’t control my emotions. I was hysterical for 1 hour and a half. After Love of my Life, the beginning of ‘39 started and Freddie put on this top hat came to the edge of the stage and threw it directly to me. I caught it as I was standing on my chair. I held onto the hat as people wanted to see it. I held it with two hands and proceeded to let people sitting in the 3rd and 5th rows have a look at it. The very best time during their US tours was when I got backstage on July 24, 1982 at the Spectrum. I was with a group of 18 Queen friends at this show. It was a very hard decision as who to take backstage with me. Only 4 of us could so of course I just had to and my friends Laura, Maureen, and Mark. We met all 4 of the band with Freddie being the last. John was a short meet and greet, Roger was very compliant and we spent 10 minutes with him. He was with Dominique his wife at the time. Basically, we were a bit star struck but he was very down to earth and seemed like a jokester. Brian also was so cool and very sweet. Brian had two young girls with him (not sure who they were) but they were very nice. Brian being my favorite of the band I asked him “Will you ever finish your thesis so you can be called Dr. Brian May?” He looked smiling “I will some day just not sure right now”. Maureen and Laura were quite with Brian but not with Roger. Mark asked Brian about his guitar (being a musician himself) and how long it took to build it. Brian told him in about 1 minute. We thanked him for taking time. The last was Freddie, when he came out of his dressing room, I lost it. I cried for a minute with my hands covering my face. I had to compose myself or I would have blown my chance to actually talk to the man. Right away he said hello to us with 2 men next to him and 2 men behind at a distance. I managed to say “The show was spectacular”. Freddie said “Thank you darling”. Laura said “We’ve always seen the best concerts except when this girl went off in 1977”. Pointing to me. Freddie looked at me for a minute and said “I do remember a few years ago here in Philadelphia a girl was so uncontrollable I felt like giving her a beer or something. Was that you?” I said “Oh yes it was. I just couldn’t control myself”. Maureen said “In 1980 we were playing musical chairs because no one wanted to sit next to her”. He laughed and said “I like musical chairs”. And we laughed. Mark said “We will be in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday” (July 27 and 28, 1982). Freddie said “Do you have good seats”. Mark said “Oh yes, 2nd and 3rd row”. He said “I cannot do better than that”. Freddie shook Mark’s hand. Maureen said “This was the best night of my life”. He smiled a bit and shook her hand and Laura’s. Freddie took my hand and kissed it. Then waved bye and proceeded to the 4th limo waiting to exit the Spectrum. John was in the 1st, Roger in the 2nd, Brian in the 3rd waiting for Freddie to get in his limo and get out into the night. It was 2:28 am when the 4 limos proceeded out of the Spectrum with the 4 of us walking behind the cars as they made their way to the street. Our 14 other friends waiting for us were so excited just to see the limos leaving the venue that one of my friends Diane was peering into Brian’s limo windows and then followed Freddie’s part way down South Broad Street. LOL. What an amazing time seeing Queen 12 times in my life. Just amazing and a beautiful experience being a loyal and faithful fan. 💜🎧🎤💜

Queen begins and ends with Freddie. He embodied the band's identity, it's triumphs and failings and he was the psyche whose loss it couldn't survive. He was more than just a singer. He was a charismatic genius, not afraid to go after what he wanted. He inspired not only as a writer and as a musician and as a performer but ultimately as a man. He died young, he lived his life to the full and he crammed in an amazing amount of music. More than most people could in five lifetimes. What a brave and courageous man. He never dies because he lives in his songs and our hearts. Love you...Xoxox ❤

All through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, I was too busy trying to support my six member family to pay much attention to the "Pop Music" of the times. I would enjoy a lot of the Disco stuff at times as it was dwindling in popularity, and I had a few"classical" favorites.
It wasn't until the middle 90s that I really heard and listened hard to "QUEEN" ...
They blew my mind; Freddie Mercury's energy and vocal range astounded me.
Regrettably, Freddie Mercury had already left us by then, and I had missed it all !!
Now, all I can do is replay my saved video of Queen's Live Aid, at least once a month and find documentaries like this to watch on RUclips.
It wrenches my heart to think about the tragedy of this man's disease and what a terrible loss to the rest of us. So sad.....
The only concerts I've ever gone to were Neil Diamond Lawrence Welk and a few years with season tickets to the Opera ...
Given the opportunity today, I would pay just about anything to go see "Freddie Mercury & Queen" !!
